Roland is the Cadillac of vinyl cutters.I have a GX-24 over six years now,no problems and trouble free operation in my business.I'm gonna upgrade to the new GS-24 soon. :)
Have no experience with the GX-24, but having owned a GS-24 for a year, it's such a fantastic machine. Try it with smoothing off for the smaller details and you'll be amazed!
Overtravel is done in software. Nearly all sign cutting software and plug-ins will allow for overtravel in a path to retrace the cutting loop by a specific amount. Tangential emulation is also done in software. The software determines the blade orientation at the last time the blade was engaged in the vinyl and then uses that orientation to select the correct point on the next path to reengage the vinyl so the blade is already pointed in the correct direction upon engagement. Another method for doing this is for the blade to make a very small cut tangent to the path before entering the path. Some software does this method better than others. Sometimes the small 'orientation cut' is in the weed and sometimes it is the weed that one desires to keep (as in the case of stencils). Some cutters such as Summa have a 3rd motor to actively drive the rotation of the blade. These cutters will have the blade perfectly oriented prior to engagement with the vinyl. These cutters are not drag knife systems but are rather active drive systems.
Which cutter would you suggest for a very simple start-up where only simple color vinyl needs to be cut for lettering, car graphics and pin stripes and such?
DJ BIS I would always recommend a 24" unit because most vinyl is available in 24" but not necessarily smaller than this. The Saga cutters with DragonCut are very nice because they are plug and play and DragonCut does vectorization, ImageCut and has blade offset calibration built into it. If you can get a 24" Saga stepper cutter, that is what I would recommend and you can trade it in, in the future for a servo unit if you grow into the need for one. That said, the GCC Experts are also a good choice. There are places that will allow trade-ins on the GCC units as well. GCC is at www.GCCWorld.com.
Great presentation. All of these extra features do matter, however I've accomplished a lot with a silhouette cameo 2. Cut just over 17ft decals for tines for wall hraohics5. Did extra thick vinyl (multi cam), I have done extremely thin and small cuts of an eagles wings,beak and eyes no problem. These are very small cuts. Like you said, get a good blade and good material and you will be ok. Also, the silhouette is under $300. Only thing it lacks is width, 12".
Good info however the graphtec also has automatic seeking for the reg marks the same as the gcc . The video says its manual thats not true at all you can manually chase the narks if for example theyre too far away on the product for the cutter to find fast but changing origin will cure this also.

Is there a plotter that would cut Thin - ish plastic wall stencils? thank you. I am looking for a cutter to cut larger at least 700mm wide cutting area but standard plastic cutters like scanncut only cuts small stencils.
You can attempt to cut felt as long as it is applied to a carrier like our low-tack mask. Although, you would more than likely have better success with acrylic felts because they are thinner. Take note that it's going to be trial and error with no guarantee that it will work. But definitely use a 60 degree blade when attempting this. Another option would be to substitute felt for our CAD-CUT® Flock II Heat Transfer Vinyl; it's the closest comparison in our CAD-CUT® product line. GCC Jaguar is best machine. try to cut thick materiel like reflective vinyl, only jaguar can cut other machine can not. Check tracking capacity of machine for length cutting jaguar is best. in other machines material will go cross.

if your serious about stenciling you should look for a flatbed plotter, pretty much any of those would do the trick. if you got a well sorted sign maker around, you should go there and get one stencil done there, might be so that the material you want to use is best cut with laser.
I apreciate the video, however it really seems they are just pushing the Graphtech wich they have placed main stage, I know the specs on the Roland GX-24 and it is a dream of a machine and stands up to any Graphtec. ..This video seems a little biased.
I'd like to add that having owned a GS-24 for a year now, and having experience with a CE6000 and FC8600, the Roland actually produces the most accurate results for VERY small details, as long as smoothing is turned off. It's soooo slow with smoothing off though!

I personally own both machines, I owned and operated a sign shop for over 20 years with my Dad, so it is with experience in the industry and experience with both machines, the Roland's long tracking out performs the Graphtec when we are cutting multiple layers during the manufacturing of very large highway displays. It appears to be more precise. That being said, the smaller more intricate overlays seem to line up better off the Graphtec.
I have a Roland Versa Camm SP300i. It has a 27-28" printing/cutting area. It is considered a 30" print/cut machine. It usesEco-Sol MAX ink. I use it to print just about anything you can imagine. It uses many types of media. Everying from light wgt to heavy wgt vinyls to car graphics to sign graphics. I love it! and the 30" is perfect size.
These machines are designed to cut rolls of vinyl for either heat application or vinyl decal application. It can cut pressure sensitive Twill since the Twill is mounted on a carrier for the machine to control the Twill.
Kawailani Decoite you can use pretty much any vinyl cutter with a mac as long as it comes with software for a Mac. You may have to pick up a few cords so it can plug into your mac though.

Although a vinyl cutter can cut paper, you can severely damage your cutting blade and/or jam your cutter. Refer to your brand vinyl cutter's operations manual for more information.
