      So true. Even scrolling through all these top comments you can see that Chris' subscribers don't appreciate this film and the review itself enough to be commenting on it, not on some other stuff.
      This was actually the first Nolan's film that I saw and fell in love with it at once. I feel like I started to enjoy crime dramas and police procedurals 10 times more after that. And perhaps the most relatable thing in it is even not that feeling of having almost no sleep for too many days and being not like yourself, but this thing about doing something terrible by accident and realizing how bad it might look for others and not being able to justify yourself. Plus some other great themes. There are so many great things about it, despite it's just a remake.

    • @corporatestatusbrah
      @corporatestatusbrah 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ira Levadnyaya honestly this movie has a lot of flaws through editing and the story. The sleep aspect is just unbelievable. 6 days of no sleep without the influence of any drugs is just absurd. He puts ransoms objects against the window to black out the room a day 5-6? Seriously it took you that long to do that. A simple towel on the window will black out a room. Then he "falls asleep" while driving at the brightest part of the movie. The editing flaws at the trash beach was so distracting. The fog scene editing is so bad. Each cut while he stumbling over the rocks, the fog is gone and you can tell he's not even in the same place between cuts. It's not a bad movies but it's not even close to underrated. 92% on RT is a gift.

    • @Ira__L
      @Ira__L 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think this fact is quite well-known. Personally I really like Norwegian and Danish movies (and on some films\tv series they have collaborated, AFAIK), and I tried to watch the original after I saw this one, but it was super hard to relate to it (maybe because I was too young or simply because I had seen 'Breaking the waves' before this and absolutely hated and regretted watching it, thus Skarsgård is always associated for me with that turgid Von Trier's abomination) and I gave up.
      I feel that Al Pacino managed to bring in some slight humour, i.e. at least some positive moments. Also, it's always nice to see some contrast and different colours in the frame. I mean that even if you haven't slept for many days or feel really down, life would never be 100.00% depressing, at least something good still remains. And the same is with colour pallette - world doesn't become just gray and blue simply due to the fact that someone is insomniac.
      I think it's also not too bad that Pacino's character looks much older that Skarsgård's one - it brings in some new themes and ideas. About being at sundown of your life, feeling alone and helpless and all that. Plus it was amazing to see Robin Williams as an antagonist for once. It made me feel that some terrible criminal might turn out to be just an everyman type guy, someone you would least expect.
      But this is just my opinion. Don't mean to offend anyone. I know that Norwegian 'Insomnia' has slightly higher critic and audience ratings, I just mean that Nolan's Insomnia might be one of the few Hollywood remakes that have the right to exist, haha!
      Anyway I was fond of all the other Norwegian films I had seen before and saw after that. I think these films / tv shows are really not well known the way they deserve.

    What people don't realise is this film had a lot of symbolism. Whenever he sleeps, the light is the truth (murder he commit) which he can't escape and the tape and pillows is the amount of things he does to cover up his crime but no matter what he does his guilt never lets him gain his sleep hense the insomnia and finally when he decides to do the right thing and turn himself in, he gets shot but gets his sleep. When the girl was going to throw the bullet he said no because as Robin Williams explained before talking about Robbie, a guy who beats up a girl in the present, if hes not given punishment can do worse crimes in the future. Therefore with her, if she threw the bullet and covered up the lie, then this will give her a mentality in which she'll constantly wipe out evidence for people she likes so that they escape being charged.

    I suspect the reason why many people think insomnia is one of his weaker films. It’s because it’s definitely more small scale and straightforward, it doesn’t have a complex plot like inception, or Menento, and it’s not like a grand spectacle Lake inception or interstellar. And it’s not a big scale action crime drama like the Dark Knight with huge visuals, and a gigantic score, by Hans Zimmer. It definitely is more small scale.
    But be perfectly honest that’s one of the things I love about this movie. And I think that this is definitely the Nolan film with the least passion because Nolan according to the IMDb for this movie didn’t really have much to do with the writing process of the film.

    Insomnia was the first Christopher Nolan film I watched, so it'll always have a special place in my heart. I remember many people tended to compare it to Memento, and said the twist was crazier in Memento and perhaps its lack of action scenes was what turned people off to this film, but I also will never really understand why people don't give it the high praise Nolan's other works get. It's probably my favorite Nolan film. Great discussion on this film, guys! It's been a really long time since I've watched Insomnia so I will have to watch it again soon to see if my opinions have changed on it.

I understand why those people think it’s underrated because it’s not full of the Nolanesque things that are in his later movies.
    I absolutely love Insomnia. I loved the atmosphere Nolan created in Insomnia, it felt so dark. And the plot and the characters are also really great. The ending was really haunting for me. And the music was superb. And did I forget to mention the great acting by Pacino and Williams and everybody else?

    I am so glad that you and I were on the same page with this. Back in 2014, I wrote an article explaining the lower ratings for this movie. The lower ratings are due to the Nolan fandom only. They were mostly disappointed because it isn't an usual Nolan mind fuck non linear story telling kinda stuff. One should watch this movie without those kind of expectations. This is such an amazing piece of work by the entire team that made it nearly a flawless masterpiece.

      The only thing I didn't liked about this movie is the soundtrack. I mean the score on itself is pretty good but I don't think it just matches with the movie's tone. when the movie wants to be dark atmospheric, the score gets all these upbeat orchestra vibe, that just feels out of place. as if it was made for a different movie

    Excellent review. This whole movie is immersive in the most unexpected way, the same musical achievement in the opening credits sequence as the Shining and the Shawshank Redemption, where you feel physically like you're being gently pulled into a different world, and you remain there for the entire film, and when you come up for air at the end, it was all worth it.

    Can we just take a moment to appreciate not just Williams' incredible sell of the role but the PERFECT casting of him for this film. This has to be one of the greatest casting calls of all time. Why? Seeing this before one hour photo, you have Williams' previous characters subconsciously in your head (he's basically a good guy right?). Through the editing and his incredible performance AND your subconscious expectations of his character given Williams's previous roles you totally get sold, like Pacino's character, on the "basically a good guy who made a mistake" schtick. The turn at the end where the raw truth of the character is revealed just would not have been as powerful with almost any other actor. Williams smashed it but whoever had the foresight to stick him in for this magic fit also made the best call of their career.

    My favourite moment of the Insomnia is when Al Pacino's character is trying to sleep, but it's too bright so every time he's trying to cover windows more to make it darker, although we can clearly see it's pretty dark already and thinking "Meh, movie's not selling this convincingly.", but after few times lady says something like "You know it's dark enough.", meaning "You know you can't sleep because it's too bright, you can't sleep because of your conscience."

    Fun discussion. Wish there was some mention of the original Norwegian film Insomnia from 1997, which in many ways I feel is a bit stronger on a filmmaking level, and filled with more dread with its simple but disorienting approach. I do find Nolan's remake is still very good on its own artistic merits though, and stands out from a lot of other crime thrillers at the time.

But Nolan is best when he was small scale. Memento, Prestige, Insomnia. His non-blockbuster stuff is where he shines.

    Hey, Chris! Great review/talk as always. I do really think you should give the original a go though. Sort of expected you had seen it starting to watch this video. I was really looking forward to some back and forth comparison between the two. Stellan Skarsgård does a pretty good job, but I must say I love Bjørn Flobergs character (Jon Holt/Walter Finch). He's a character actor from Norway, so his style doesn't really change much from film to film, but his style really suits this character. Another interesting thing about the two movies is that the original is a stereotypical scandinavian crime movie, and some of the 'feel' of 2002-Insomnia definately takes from that style of crime film.

      Jackie Brown was perhaps his most critically acclaimed and many agree the character development is much deeper and richer than that of Pulp Fiction's. Jackie Brown lacked the level of violence that Tarantino became known for. And Insomnia certainly lacked the style of action that Nolan became known for with Dark Knight and Inception. So the comparison is appropriate in that regard.

    Guessing the folks who did not love it only watched the film once. I loved it more after the second time and even more after the third. After my last viewing (6 or 7 times), I was just stunned by how overall great this movie was. The acting is spot on and everyone was perfectly cast. And a great story and the screenplay even better! The music is perfect. The cinematography is perfect. And a great location. But every actor's connection to Pacino is really its own perfect little sub-plot - and the sub-plots keep coming and coming. Sometimes there are more than one subplot between two specific characters. And Dormer (Pacino) himself was in almost every subplot as well - Pacino was definitely at the top of his game - so good - and guessing every other actor rose to that occasion as well. Every aspect of this movie is excellent and when you put it all together, it gets better and better with every viewing.

      I have to agree with AG64 here. Overrated might be over used but not in this case. Interstellar was an example of a movie where they couldn't let go of some of the ideas they had to make it flow better and the movie ultimately suffered. Nolan is overrated. His movies are fun and exciting and some of them are great, but he's not the god everyone says he is. His movies don't nearly have as much depth and flawed characters as a guy like Paul Thomas Anderson. He's the guy who deserves the internet love that Nolan has.

    Watched 10 minutes of this video and it made me want to re-watch Insomnia again (after watching it the first time about 7 years ago), I can't say I loved it as much as you did but I liked it a bit more than I originally did. One thing I appreciated this time around is Robin William's performance, he really sold that dark, demented, really creepy character. Only after his death did I really appreciate this side of Robin Williams and, now, am saddened to think of what kind of roles he could have turned-in. As you mentioned, and as I could imagine, not a lot of people like/liked his transition into dark roles, I for one like it when I see an actor do a role out of his apparent comfort zone. Some actors shine and others flop but Robin really knocked it out with this role. There's too many good things to point out but this is probably my favorite.

    The fans are right not to treat Insomnia as a Nolan movie. It's a remake of a 1997 movie - Insomnia (from Norway) starring Stellan Skarsgard. And all the best plot points that Nolan's movie has, it got from the Original. Altho, Nolan's version is a better less desolate, less black and white version of the two. And the endings are different.

    Insomnia was filmed where I live. I remember getting out of my car and looking across the street, Al Pacino and the Director were mapping out the scene where he shoots the dead dog. I watched for a few minutes. There was no security no fenced off area just the two of them talking.
