In Rob Spangler's modeled era, the real Western Pacific had seven subdivisions. Rob freelanced an 8th subdivision running from roughly Elko, Nevada to an interchange with the UP and D&RGW near Ogden (while the prototype went to Salt Lake).
On this HO Scale masterpiece, the Western Pacific's 8th sub serves the same kinds of industries that were served by rail in the desert west of Salt Lake City. This layout was built for operations and includes enough prototype fidelity to satisfy even the biggest stickler in its fictional setting.
Whether we're talking signature scenes with huge industries that span 10 feet along the line, or long expanses of scenery where the casual viewer would have trouble recognizing where the scene meets the backdrop, this layout makes what most would think of as a "boring" region to model come to life. Welcome to Rob Spangler's 8th Subdivision.

John you surround yourself with wonderful and talented people, besides yourself. Thank you Sir. Your channel ROCKS!!❤
Thanks, Chad. My goal is to include experts and talented people on the channel. The hope is that if I achieve that goal, people will be inspired along the way. Thanks for taking the time to comment!
Very nice layout and presentation. Enjoyed every moment and what you did to get the most out of what you have to work with!
Ron, you nailed it.
Wonderful layout and great detailed info - very inspiring!
Well done structures, scenery and backdrops - very convincing and realistic. I started following the WP in 1980, and by that time even the modern paint scheme locos were starting to look tired! The lack of upkeep on the rolling stock told its own story and visually foreshadowed the merger with UP. Anyhow, great layout and video, thanks for sharing.
Really nicely done. I appreciate the philosophy of the layout. I, too, have used the concept of a partial building along the fascia with the back simply flat along the fascia. I agree that not all the industries need to be fully modelled. Great layout, thanks for sharing it with us.
Great job!!!
As fantastic as the layout looks in the video, it is stunning i person. I've had the opportunity to operate on the WP 8th Sub- an experience I will never forget.
Very nice layout. Well done.
Outstanding video and layout.
"...instead of something that's in your basement." You achieved it alright! This WP 8th sub layout is awesome- from the intricate buildings, lots of various interesting industries and foreground sets to the lifelike back drop artwork. Cedar Creek Canyon is a neat idea forcing viewpoints. I love where the layout goes into the back drops at roads and crossings, seamless. Good job Rob and team. Nice camera / production work as well.
Glad I visited the layout during the SLC WP convention in 2018! Another Grrrrreat layout!!!!!
Absolutely phenomenal layout with some fantastic ideas. Thanks for sharing.
Very nice - great explanations
Beautiful layout! Glad I’ve had the chance to operate on the WP 8th Sub.
layout is well detailed, for area and era
Great layout.
Extremely well thought out and executed, really enhanced my enjoyment of your line
Like seeing the use of Caboose Industries switch throws.
Thank you for the Tour from Denmark 😊
Great layout. Excellent use of different kits to create your industries.
Really great layout built by a master modeler. Well done Robbie.
Love the hidden turn-back, it’s such a unique way to transition between scenes. The farm scene and creek are superb.
Thank you Ron and John for a great video. Great tips on operation, track, and scenery.
The hobo union approves of this video....❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Thanks Rob, very nice layout!
Great to see a new video featuring Rob's wp8thsub. This layout has been an inspiration for the layout I am currently working on with what little hobby time I have. I've already learned a few scenery bit's from Rob on the MRH forums that he used to frequent including how to make scrub brush from paint stripper pads and river bottom colors to simulate shallows or deeper areas. Thanks for presenting this video and it's nice to see the industry building feature here. There is a lot of food for thought - so many excellent elements to create scenes that look real. There are definitely some great idea's that I can take into consideration as I work on my own layout based on the D&RGW at Grande Junction CO and west into Utah!
Great layout, thanks for showing
Oh thats funny. There is actually a WP GP-38/2 being repainted at the UTA's Frontrunner shops in Salt Lake. A church buddy of mine showed me pictures
Another great video!
What did you use for the Black Ballast?, I need that for a DRGW layout. You have such a beautiful layout!
