Yum! how the flexibility / ease of cutting pre-painted sections of cardboard highlights the opportunity for energy inherent in co-located lines, forms and fields

Excellent video; I'm really drawn to the colors, the collaged cardboard pieces & the many gritty elements. Very interesting work!

A sweep of the people standing in front of the Turbines nicely captured their relative size. Thanks!

"James Kalm" looks at art the way I do when I go to a museum or gallery. Thanks. So with him, it's like we are here even though we're not all there.

The ones with the white ground with these painting styles POPS. Maybe because the white ground resembles like a purgatory, or white light... Thanks James for your videos. F*** yeah Sterling.

I don’t understand the use of cardboard or how it relates to the painted surfaces, but it’s looks really fkn gooood.

As much as I wish I were a fan, I still just don't get Sterling Ruby. It feels impenetrable, and doesn't give many hooks to bring one in to his particular cosmos. Also, isn't cardboard *rather* un-archival? I'm usually wrong - probably this is very special, non-acid cardboard that will last centuries (if anyone cares about that kind of thing at these modest prices, heh.) Well, I learn more in your comments, and especially this video's description, than anywhere else. Thanks for the tour, and thank you Kate!

Maybe I can help you even if taste is personnal. Sterling is interested in the coherence of his body of work. His work is not only based on technical skills, but also about a vision and energy, picture him as a artist that creates objetcs for movie set. His work could easly fit in a post apocaliptic movie. His ceramics are splendid in my opinion. I think you have to appreciate the narrative that he offers to enjoy some of his artworks.

I’m in love with his ceramics, the rest of his work I feel sort of meh towards. I don’t hate his paintings but they don’t have the magic of his ceramic work

What do you think is the adhesive used for applying the cardboard ?

Great paintings, but I am getting tired of the huge sizes of so much of the art, and who can afford an abode they would fit in?

Turbine Dixie, the last painting with the orange canvas with the x cardboard, seems like it might be a reference to the southern Dixie, confederate flag

I feel the descriptive reality of these paintings. His industrial output and environment find themselves embedded in the structures of the work. I don’t find any relationships philosophically with abstract expressionism.

I want to not like these and say it's a cynical take on AbEx for the smartphone generation but... they look pretty damn good on my screen.
