Final scene translation You said you’ll come back and finish making my shoes What are you doing here like this I waited so long for you You promised to come back to me How can you be here like this Say something to me I waited 50 years for you Say something to your little brother I should never left you alone there Brother… brother… *let the tears flow*
It goes to show the power of human emotion. The older brother sacrificed himself, not for his country or countrymen, but to give his younger brother the time to retreat. His anger against the South Koreans when he thought his brother died to the point where he found out his brother was alive shows that he would do anything for his brother. Truly shows brotherhood at its finest.
The scene where the younger brother finally learns of his brother's fate and his cry for answers always makes me cry no matter how hard I try not to. It reminds of how so many of my family members all fought and died in the war, so that both me and my younger brother can live in prosperity. And yet Korea is still separated. I can meet with my brother from time to time, but my grandparents can never reunite with their siblings ever since the 1950's. For me this movie will always serve as a reminder of how much a country and it's people have lost and still can lose.
I feel your pain. My grandfather got separated with his family and hasn't met them up to the day he passed away. I have cousins I have never met living in North Korea and we don't know how they are doing. I hope one day both Koreas will be united so that I may meet my long lost family members.
I'm irish I know your pain. Us irish are like korea we are divided too. I have family who served the IRA and England they killed each other too it was just as bad. Korea and Ireland share the same sad history.
Being an older brother myself watching this scene I can honestly say in Jin Tae's situation I would've done the exact same thing for my younger brothers. Sacrificing myself to so they could live is a no brainer.
50 years ago, a surviving veteran of the Korean War, probably graduated from college, married, has children and grandchildren, eventually mourns upon learning that his older brother had died, never to fufill the promise to finish the shoes he was making for him.
That line @5:58 says "I should never leave you alone there" hits me so hard. And the next line, I shed my manly tears when he called brother at the end

The younger brother goes to the enemy side to find his brother when he found out he’s still alive to bring him back to South Korea.
this movie reminds me of my great uncle he got killed in 1952. He was awarded the medal of honor for saving his friends in combat. In 1954 two years after got killed both of my great grandfather and great grandmother went to Washington DC to get my great uncle’s medal of honor. if u may know my great uncles name is Charles George. i’ll give him a hug and tell him thank you for service and he was a cherokee from North Carolina and he my hero. I am Malaysian. And honestly i very hate British because of their invansion in my country. For me,British,United State,France,Belgium,Netherland,Spain,Germany,Japan and Communist are all the same.
I can understand why the older brother would stay back rather than retreat. In those days, alleged Communists were subject to imprisonment and execution in the hands of the government. Even though the Jin-tae went crazy because he thought his brother died, he still would've been executed without mercy. I believe that at that moment, the older brother already knew his fate and that the only way to save his brother's life was to let him go and sacrifice his life holding back the Communists. This scene hits me every time I watch this film and really was the most emotional part of the movie. Im not surprised that this movie has received so many honors.
I see where you are coming from but I don't think Jintae had enough time to think about all that well. My guess is he was injured badly and he could see the wave of Chinese/North korean soldiers were coming down fast and since he's dressed in a North's uniform, he would've endangered the life of his brother.
Even if he retreated, Jin tae was already well known for betraying South Korea. That could be the circumstance (I still think Jin tae could've made it back) but still had he retreated with his brother, his life was screwed anyways. The government back in those days was very unmerciful to alleged Communists and would not have given any mercy to Jin Tae.
Perhaps the sole reason he stayed behind was to simply make sure his brother got out alive ? Don't think so complicated Jin Tae never cared about what the government would do or not do everything he did was for the people he cared it's simple as that and that's how simple things should be.
TwilightLink293 Im only saying that either way, Jin Tae's life was already over. There was no way out for him. Im not thinking complicated as this was the norm in South Korea back in those days. The best he could do at that situation was to fight off advancing soldiers to save his brother's life and die with honor rather than as a traitor had he left with his brother alive. I watched this movie enough times and have family that lived during the war to say that Jin Tae could not escape from this situation alive no matter what.
Andrew Cho Dying with honour or dying as a traitor. Those are complicated thoughts since honour is a complicated concept varying from culture to culture even from time to time. By saying that Jin Tae's last thoughts were about those concepts you take away one of the most important aspects of this movie which is simply love for your family (in particuluar).
My family to this day cannot find my grandfather's remains as his grave was totally destroyed during the war. My family hopes someday when the country is united, we can try and search for him.
Slowly die peacefully, i can handle that.. but.. BONES!?! I was shocked and crying when i watch that scene for the first time.. It breaking my freaking heart..
I have never forgotten the saddest history and separated things in my country. There will not be this tragedy all over the world in the future that we should give the love and sharing our peaceful mind for our next generations. This is so much lessen in the past ever since it has been getting started from the history of the Human Beings.
