    Very good Laura. Guitar player for 48 years, play professionally, learned banjo and fiddle the last couple years to add to the show. Your method and explanation is very logical and easy to follow. I'll be adding Orange Blossom to my Devil Went Down to Georgia and a few other fiddle tunes I've learned! Thanks Again for posting! :-D

    Hello Laura, Thanks for this tutorial. I've tried to learn the O B Special before but it was a bit confusing. I think you explained it really well with the triangles! I've been playing for 25 years but only playing bluegrass recently and I think your method is reaally excellent. I got discouraged a couple of times before. It's not really that complicated when it's well explained. Thankyou. Dan

    @ninjaboytellem4 EXACTLY. You can play this on the VIOLA exactly as I demonstrate, but you will be in the Key of D instead of the Key of A, which would sound just as cool!

    Hi, I have looked at this video many times and am learning slowly. I wondered where I would find the notes to Orange Blossom Special. as the video says it can be found at your website. No luck finding it. Thanks for the videos. You are a great teacher. The best online that I have seen. You cover all bases.

    You are basically right on. Fiddlers play the A section in the key of E. Because I'm a banjo picker and guitarist I capo on A and play in E. On the guitar it would be a capo D.

    Learn the Hokum bowing FIRST, and the rest will fall into place! You can even practice the hokum bowing on just open strings.

    This is causing my wrist to cramp. That happens often when I attempt to move my fingers in a different way. Could you give me a help for that, or will my wrist become used to it as I continue?

    Miss Lora - Do you have any exercises or suggestions, besides electric shock treatment, on how to break the habit of the left-hand death grip on the neck of the violin? Thank you, and thank you for your videos.

    • @RedDesertViolin
      @RedDesertViolin  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LOLOL....thanks for the laugh. Ok, barring a shock collar, (my personal favorite), why don't you take my 28 day Thumb Squeeze challenge? (search THUMB on my channel and you should find it). It gives you MULTIPLE strategies. But the MAIN gist of that video is: choose a 28 day period where your PRIMARY FOCUS will be breaking this habit. You need a period in time where NOTHING else gets in the way. And please write back...I'd love to know your results!

    VERY interesting! The first part is in E, but then it modulates to A and stays there....I can't imagine playing the other parts in E.....
    I did look it up, and it appears that harmonicas play the tune in E, but I have not heard any fiddle players playing the hokum part OR the very last part in E, only in A.
    I'll keep looking!

  • @RedDesertViolin
    @RedDesertViolin  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    It is dangerous for me to tell you "you will get used to it"...although to some extent, you will. HOWEVER, you must attempt to relax your grip. Your mind must control your body's natural reaction to "new contortions". Use your eyes to connect the mind and the body by looking at your hand, and command your hand to let go and relax. It really works.
    Also, try working on moving the fingers (1 & 3 versus 2 & 4) while holding your violin guitar style. It's an easier position to learn relaxation.

    Are the coloured tapes taught before or after sustained bowing is established?

    • @RedDesertViolin
      @RedDesertViolin  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's different for each teacher, but for teachers who use tapes, that is the FIRST THING. We teach holding the violin, holding the bow, and then placing the fingers aiming for the tapes. (sustained bows come quite a bit later in my opinion....it's more advanced)

    Laura just starting to learn to play this , my first finger keeps sliding up pass E on the D string , feels like I can’t get my fingers to spread far enough apart , any suggestions for this .

    • @RedDesertViolin
      @RedDesertViolin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are probably tensing up and squeezing/pressing too hard because of the double stops. So you need to learn to relax your left hand, and that will allow you to keep your 1st on the E without sliding up.
      Also, do LOTS of practicing on the double stops by playing each note alone first...then together......all the while, tell your hand to relax. So play the double stops like this: Bottom, Top, Together Together. And relax the hand!
      Good luck! You can do it.

    Do tapes help te ear or the eye or ear?

    • @RedDesertViolin
      @RedDesertViolin  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tapes help beginners to establish "correct pitch" while they learn the dozens of other skills necessary to start to sound good. After about a year or so, the student develops muscle memory of where the fingers go, plus their ears recognize correct pitch versus incorrect pitch. Mind you, there is still LOTS of fine tuning that has to happen to get really good intonation, but finger tapes give assistance until we get the basics down. Do, to answer your question, Tapes help the EARS by adding a visual element. Some people are opposed to tapes....I get that. But I love the fast results I get by using them.

      It depends on what method you plan to start. For Suzuki method, start by learning the Twinkle Twinkle Little Star variations. You'll find them on my channel. TONS of technique comes from those simple little variations!
