true your modern day fuel injected cars with supercharging and turbocharging will outperform the old muscle cars but the older cars were much better looking cars and apply the modern technology to the old engine and they could probably keep up with the modern cars if not run faster..

yes and no... in the 50's a lot guys were hot rodding because the true muscle car wasn't round yet... in the 60's average people were either going down a strip with a rod or a muscle car. my choice is a 66 coronet 426

Adam Othman Had a '64 Fury with a 426 Street Wedge & TorqueFlite automatic. Lots of low-end torque, a true muscle car before the GTO. And faster..

Steve52344 thats really cool. but thats 1964 (when the goat came out) not 1954.... so my point is still valid, however the mopars had awesome engines i think the best america ever produced however majority of my favourite muscle car are gm. i don't have favourite muscle brand like many i just love the cars. my favourite mopar: 67 coronet r/t with the 426.

Steve52344 i see. but i still love the hemi more for its history (I'm italian and it was designed by vittorio jano in italy in the 30's) and tbh right around that era 63-64 is what people deem the muscle car era meaning that when chrylser was putting out those kinds of cars it was the first time any of the big 3 had hit back starting with gm and the gto

Adam Othman If Pontiac had put their 421 Catalina engine in the 64-65 GTO it would've been the quickest muscle car of those few years. Good low end torque is more important than horsepower for street racing. Torque translates to acceleration. From 0-60 the 426 WEDGE (which later became the 440) was quicker than the mighty 426 HEMI. And the Chrysler TorqueFlite was the absolute best automatic transmission of the muscle car era, 1962-1970. But the GTO got the publicity, thus crowned the "first" muscle car. My favorite muscle car -- a 1968-69 427 COPO Camaro. 12 second quarter mile if tweaked right. But straight from the factory the pinnacle of muscle were the 1970 Buick 455 GSX and the 454 LS6 Chevelle. 500 ft/pounds of torque.

I never seen an early 442 before till now, at first I thought it was an early Chevelle.

And there ya have it folks! These were the fastest musclecars of the 60's, and the 1/4 mile times were barely under 14 seconds.
Your basic Mustang GT or Challenger will do low 12's, high 11's straight from the factory! More expensive musclecars of today will do 10's!
I always hate it when the old folks talk about how much faster 1960's muscle cars were than the cars of today! Please!
These cars were great looking and they performed well for their time, but they simply cannot outperform even the most basic muscle cars of today. Handling, acceleration, braking, safety, comfort, etc.

exactly. i plan to run a torino in this class but todays stuff is insanely fast compared to the older stuff.......... stock vs stock.

And it took 50+ years of technology advancement to make it happen.

@@burtmcgillicutty3311 actually they had stuff in the 80's that would smoke most of the stock stuff back then. mid to high 14's was the faster stuff back then.

GNX maybe. Nothing else remotely close until late 90's.

BILL WILLIAMSON cut it out man. The TRUTH is only One bone stock American car in the 80’s came close to running well under 14sec in the 1/4 & that’s the 87 GNX. Other than that the 64-71 Big Block cars (and the 73-74 T/A Super Duty) would pull away from every other American Car of the 80’s Especially if you throw modern Drag radials on a 69 Boss 429, 68 Hemi Dart, 70 Hemi Roadrunner, 70 Buick GSX, 70 ZL1 Camaro, etc.. they will walk even the 87 GNX

If producers want to know what people want to see on tv, they should realy consult me cos this could have been covered alot better. Started out cool then went to some kind of promotion for most of the show, then no racing..... This would have been a great oppertunity to show Hemi vs anything that beats it or 409 vs 427 Ford etc. Judge vs. Cobra jet.

covering the event as a whole would have been a lot better show. also would put to rest a lot of questions about which one of these cars were truly the fastest in mostly stock form. I would love to se a bone stock muscle car drag race with them on slicks instead of those tiny tires .
