Fabulous, driving piano interval with Frank Chastenier inspires the follow-through of the band in this innovative arrangement.

that unison writing is brilliant! when people sing from the heart, they don't sing harmonized, they sing in unison. tashiko ackioshi
    also wrote much in unison.

Perhaps my fave Willis chart. He once remarked to me that it could serve as a Local 47 (LA Musician's Union) sight-reading entrance exam.
This actually got some significant airplay on the local FM station.

Apprently The WDR ( TV/ Radio) of Köln (Cologne) having the best big band, do not make DVDs of their concerts - unbelievable! The WDR big band invite great musicians and arrangers - for this particular concert James Moody, Jeff Hamilton, and Bill Holman for this wonderful arrangement. Please plead with WD to make these concerts available. Maybe if there are enough of us, then the Gods in the Ivory Towers at the WDR Management may have pity of us. Check out the WDR Concert with Don Menza.

This arrangement by Bill Holman is another example of the genius of this man. This version of Just friends is full of escitement, the band also has the energy reminding me of Stan Kenton's days when Holman also wrote for the band leader. Those were exciting days, this version of the song is as up to date as it can get.

@trumpetman - The tune is there the whole time. In a small group you would only hear more of what he does at the beginning with the piano solo. His extensions, rhythmic syncopations, and chordal substitutions are beautiful. Very nice way of adapting a very common tune to a modern interpretation.

Yes, its hard to believe that anyone wouldn't like this or appreciate what was musically performed here. Anyway there was some outstanding reading and what this arrangement may have lacked in harmony it made up for in linear artistry. It is also good to here James Moody play an amazing solo...I miss his spontaneous genius...may he RIP!

There's so much jazz written for and played that originality can get tough to dig up. It takes a higher IQ to produce that whimsical difference that captivates.

my synopsis: Bill Holman - great !!!!
    > Opening piano solo - love it, great, outstanding playing and technique, great interpretation. > first ensemble statement - interesting augmentation, interesting close of the phrase. > second time through nice drive by the rhythm section but I feel the ensemble writing (at this point) seems repetitive and rather boring, ala Phillip Glass, , until Moodys' solo begins, then, It's back to great interesting lines and dynamics etc. love that end

@atpal Do you have an ear!? The harmonies on this charts are great. And if you think it sounds easy it's because the band plays it extremely well....As a musician I can relate to the fact that when you are in a group that can read well and collectively are playing their asses off, a difficult chart played well will sound easy.....if you play an instrument pick up your horn, better yet try to play this piece in your bigband.....

Due to being a public service media company, the WDR can't produce DVD's, CD's etc on there own since that would be considered unfair to other producers. It has to do with rules and laws, not ivory towers :)

I have "Just Friends" from many artists. Bill Holman is exceptional. I just wish an arranger would open a site (I would be one of the first to subscribe - credit card already ready!) to help us ignoramuses. For example what would have been the thoughts of Bill Holman when he approached the road he would take "Just Freinds". The mind boggles to think what he could do with so many other wonderful compositions.

@atpal I agree. The chart really isn't even Just Friends, it's basically an extended solo written for the band as a unit. Unless you happen to recognize the changes as Just Friends, you won't even catch the brief mention of the head he throws in at the beginning.
Bill Holman's writing is usually much, MUCH better than this. I'm guessing this is a chart he wasn't really interested in doing.

Amazing how many people don't understand, but want to comment. The use of the long unison could be explained, but people like "scales" wouldn't understand. "Bek1" complains about insults, then hurls a really dumb one! LOL There is so much to learn about music, but only the open minds learn.

    To hommefriday:
Bill wrote the chart on the way to Germany. It's definitely different and since I tried to study with him after Berklee in 1968 and know his work, he wrote better arrangements.
And for SJAzz92 - I don't care for the band playing in unison for most of the chart too -
    maybe Bill was rushed.
And OttoLink10 is full of shit. Everyone has a right to an opinion without getting insulted. What is there beyond comprehension? Do you like Tom Kubis?

@hommefriday He didn't say that he didn't like the band - he doesn't like the -chart-.
The band sounds amazing and makes a VERY difficult chart sound easy, but that doesn't change the fact that it's not a particularly good chart in the first place. The head is basically unrecognizable and the opening 200+ bar unison thing he wrote gets downright -boring- after awhile.
As I said in a prior comment, I think this is a chart he just wasn't really interested in doing in the first place.

    • @olesinell7994
      @olesinell7994 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Matt Balmer, I think you're mistaken. Bill Holman actually picked this chart and released it on one of his few albums he did with his own band (Bill Holman Band, 1988). For me that's a clear sign that he likes his arrangement.
And so do I. It's very unique. As I hear it the long melody played in unison creates a great tension because it's keeping back the tutti chords that everybody is expecting. In the original recording there's a bass solo after the unison part. I think that's even a better choice than a sax solo because that makes the final shout chorus an even bigger relief.

I don't know if I have ever read so many stupid comments and criticisms of music that is beyond your comprehension. I wonder if ANY of you have ever played in a band that could even attempt to perform this. Both the arrangement and the performance are wonderful. There is no other arrangement similar to this ANYWHERE, and the band is terrific. "Plugmalion" seems to have a pretty good idea of what is going on. You amateur critics need to close your mouths, and open your ears.

Ok this tune should remain in the combo setting to avoid things like this. I waited two minutes to hear the head only to hear some strange augmentation of it. What a relief it was for the solo section to start. I pity the audience.

There are quite a few big band arrangements of Just Friends. Why write the same boring arrangement that sounds the same as everything else? Plus an arrangement is a decomposed composition anyway.
