That Octobriana blacklight comic is dope af.
There was a movie called superhero movie that spoofs superheroes. It's supposed to be like scary movie
Loved The Tick cartoon when I was little. Later on became nigh-obsessed with The Venture Bros. and discovered that Edlund helped develop the first season. Makes sense because the subject matter and tone are similar (satirical, fantastic superheroes dealing with mundane modernity) and have always considered Venture Bros. as a spiritual sequel to The Tick since.
Ben Edlund was in the Joss Whedon sphere for a long time. Wrote for Angel and Firefly. He also wrote on Supernatural and the Powers TV show.
And Gotham season 1
If I could choose one person to meet alive today it would be Ben Edlund. That bum is based on Bob Polio (Robert Polio). I actually have a letter in Tick #5 (the one he didn't draw of course) and am/was a proud member of MOAV (Mystic Order of Arachnid Vigilance). Also, Edlund did Tick #1 in High School! There's a psudepigraphal issue #13 based on his notes, but he didn't have anything to do with it really. Just okay. He wrote Titan AE with Whedon, Angel, Supernatural, Firefly and Venture Bros. episodes too. Including Smile Time.
Ben Edlund did some work on the venture bros which i would highly recommend.
Another great vid, guys. I'm peeved that you beat me to the punch, but I'm going to do a Sam & Max review to make up for it!
Tick was definitely printed in a golden age format, at least that's the size bag I had to get for them and I bought every issue off the shelf of my shop, Mike's Coliseum in San Jose. That had to be about 1988 or 89 because I remember vividly being in 7th or 8th grade at the time. It was maybe the second or third issue that had a die-cut cover that I remember my shop got some rare "uncut" copies that we sold for cover price on the stand, and they skyrocketed in price!
Edlund absolutely worked in Hollwood between Tick adaptations. He wrote scripts for Joss Whedon's Firefly and some other stuff I can't remember.
The Tick is amazing in the way that the adaptations, while not as good as the comic, were all pretty good in different ways. A really funny cartoon and two pretty funny live action shows is a pretty cool legacy for a great comic.
I'd never read these, I was only familiar with the TV show. I still laugh a little when every episode post Chairface Chippendale's Ultimate Act of Vandalism had 'CHA' on the moon.
I was helping my parents move a few months back and found a notebook where I drew tons of lopsided panels from this. Hope we get an interview with Edlund, so much interesting stuff to dig into.... I wanna know more about NEC!
My dad came to check on me because I was laughing so hard in my room reading The Tick for the first time when I was 12. Great episode, dudes.
YES! I was hoping you guys would tackle the Tick! Love it.
Spread this vid. Get it popular. We wanna revisit all of the first 12 issues.
Jim, Ed: New England Comics had a newsletter that would list what comics were coming out. Those raw 3 pages in the end are indeed from 1986 and were in the New England Comics newsletter #14. No one really thought to hang on to those so they are hard to come by. I see copies offered on eBay right now for $2K+ (which is absolutely crazy)!
Fricking love the Kayfabe Brain-Trust! Thanks.
To be a bit more precise, the first two raw pages were in New England Comics newsletter #14 and the third page was in New England Comics newsletter #15. Don’t want to steer anyone the wrong way! I’m from Boston so NEC was my local comic shop and Tick was definitely a big deal for them back in the day.
Thanks for this great trip through the past! Those of us who were around when this came out can explain the cult obsession with this comic and why Edlund became such an influence in popular culture. First off, while on the surface this might seem like yet another Superhero parody from the 80's B&W bubble, the Tick was always operating on a much more sophisticated level. It had an absurdist, post-modern sense of humor that completely predated and influenced the Adult Swim vibe almost 20 years later. Some of the writers on the Fox cartoon series went on to create the Venture Brothers, which owes pretty much its entire sensibility to Ben Edlund- it's the same dry, offbeat humor that nowadays is standard cultural fare. Edlund always wanted to be a filmmaker, which is why he never really devoted himself to the Tick (much to the disappointment of his fans, who kept waiting for the Multiple Santas issue that never came.)
Quite honestly, Ben Edlund was a young punk who really just had an incredibly strong and independent artistic voice well developed for his young age. It's amazing that he's been able to milk the character through four different incarnations all the way through recent history, but it just goes to show you the strength of this absurdist comic genius. Sure, the art was great, but the Tick is really all about the writing- the pacing of his dialogue was heads and shoulders above typical comics fare, and that's the heart of the comic- great characters, absurd scenarios, a penchant for combining Mythical super-people with the banality of everyday existence, something Tarantino was to do a decade later in his films. It's true that this is not Comics Journal material- the Tick is not really a vehicle for personal expression or anything that mature, but in terms of "art" it does check off some of the boxes- a fierce, original voice and an intelligence working on a worthwhile wavelength.
The Tick got me into comics, and I spent a long time trying to find something just as good- Ralph Snart, Boris the Bear... I tried all sorts of indie humor comics and nothing ever came close. Then I discovered Fantagraphics and the Comics Journal... and a whole new, more mature world opened up, but that's another story.
SPOON!! best ending ever to one of your videos, you guys rock
I have a feeling this might be a future interview?
Ben Edlund has done a lot of writing for TV. He was a staff writer for Supernatural, maybe still is, i don't know.
And he worked with Joss Whedon on Angel before that.
Ben and joss wrote the script for that anime movie Titan a.e
Glad to see this one under the microscope. Remember buying it off the spinner rack, summer of 1988. Totally fell in love right from seeing the cover. Followed it all the way to issue 12. Wish Ben would do another comic. The first print did have 2 staples, and back then new comic book day was Friday, not Wednesday.
In the 1980s i had Ambush Bug, so when the Tick came out i was so ready!!! The Tick is the best.
I remember buying the Tick #1 and Faust Premiere Act 1 (the black cover with the blood dripping) on the same day. I was 17 years old. Ah.... Memories.
The Tick (alongside Flaming Carrot) was one of those comics that went a long way to forming my sense of taste, and my sense of humour, when it came to comics. I'm looking forward to the rest of this series.
I am excited to hear you are excited about doing a Sam And Max video!
I think if you telephoned on of the New England Comics stores they'd be happy to direct you to someone you could talk to. You could even ask Steve Bissetts - he did some covers for one of their excellent reprint series, Tales Too Terrible To Tell.
SPOON!
He is a genius. He directed some of Angel, like the Happytown puppet episode.
In THE CHROMA-TICK special edition #1 Feb. 1992,( the first colored issue of The Tick number 1) has a very nice six page publishing history and process interview with Ben Edlund and NEC PRESS assistant editor Larry Boyd and NEC art director Bob Polio adding perspective on THE TICK.
New England Comics in the House!
Tick was one of the first trades I bought when I started reading comics. Got it through the Science Fiction Book Club. Also got Crisis, Secret War, and Ronin.
A rundown of THE JAM would not go amiss! SPOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNN!!!!
New England in tha house!!!!
Cool!!! Yes, found it. Was looking for some Tick Content. Awesome. Got a shoot interview for sir Edlund?
A new printing of the complete Edlund Tick trade is available on the NEC official website. Cool page to check out. I'm in Rhode Island but I've been to a few of the comic shops in Massachusetts that NEC own. Only about a 45-50 minute drive. Can't do s**t now due to the shut down from the virus unfortunately.
I never got in to The Tick comics but love the TV shows (live action). I think I missed out on something I would have enjoyed. Have you guys reviewed or discussed Sergio Aragones's Groo comics? Those are hilarious too.
There was an Editor at NEC that sent the nicest and most constructive rejection letters of any publisher I submitted to in the early 90s.
This was great! I'm gonna go dig out my trade paperback that I bought at a Hastings when I was a little dude. Spoon!!
Spoon!!
Never got into the cartoon as a kid as I was into more "serious" (i.e. X-Men, Spiderman, Batman, etc..yeah I know.) shows. I remember the episode where the guy with the mustache turns into a dinosaur/kaiju and starts wreaking havoc and also remember the episode where there was another Tick character who looked like a more bad-ass version.
Check out HECKLER by Kieth Giffen. Similar vibe as the first run of TICK.
You mentioned Looking at Sam & max in this episode which was great as always by the way. To Sam & max I say yes!!! Yes please.
Do you guys remember Milk and Cheese? That was a funny comic...
"SPOON!"
Very influential. You can even see Yusuke Murata doing some of the same stuff in One-Punch Man today.
Murata only redraws one’s webcomic with more detail. One is the real mind behind one punch man
I always thought Millar was parodying superheroes in Kick-Ass.
Hey Guys, Really enjoyed the video and the channel. I'm the current artist on The Tick, and if I can answer any questions or help facilitate contact with NEC editorial or other folks that worked on the comics, please let me know. I'd be happy to help.
I want to hear about Jim’s top secret Tick #1 acquisition!
The Tick was reprinted a number of times. Each printing had a different colour scheme. The original had a black background. My own fourth printing is orange.
Team "The Cockroach" from Cerebus.
There was a scary movie esque super hero movie I remember it had drake bell in it can't remember the name lol
Mystery Men is an excellent comedy superhero movie. Thank me later :)
1992, i was just out of high school. i was ordering eightball from fanta, my friend was getting stray bullets and another close friend fell down the nec hole. he got everything and even joined the tick society. three dorks from wv... those were the days.
I would love for you guys to do a chapter or two of one punch man, not the redrawn ones, the original ones done by the author
...Tick Talk...
Thats not the Tick that Nick Soapdish.... he's French.
I know a bit about the tick and Ben Edlund if u want to hit me up
SPOON!
