The laser is precisely turned on and off so that it is on for some parts of the frame and off for others. A computer calculates when it needs to do this to get the desired effect. As it's only timed for one camera, other shots won't show it the same way. You can see this in the broadcast during the second chorus, when the laser beams around them appear to be moving slower in the close-up shots.

It cool to see what the lazer effects look like without the sync used on the TV camera, it crazy how that makes them look so physic defying on TV.
How do you know it was working using some sort of syncing? I don't know much about lighting systems and would love to learn a bit more :)
