This song was written by aed Sheeran and was given to BTS as a gift. The second song Sheeran has given to BTS. They also performed this song at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

You know, it's funny, I got into BTS because I loved Boy with luv (ft. Halsey), Dynamite, Butter and this one. Last October I decided I needed to listen to more BTS because I already loved these songs... Now well... I guess this quote applies perfectly to my experience with the band: "I came looking for copper and I found gold".
PTD has really good vibes and I even enjoy the MV, but compared with the rest of their stuff, their TRUE selves... I guess this is what happens when you let other people write songs for you, more particulary, people from a completely different culture...
Anyways, I love yout reactions! Keep it up!

yeah a lot of people did not like this song not that it’s not a good song it’s just not very bts like….you know? but this was just a fun song written by ed sheeran for bts (correct if i’m wrong with that one) just to cheer people up during the pandemic, also for the moves they wanted an easy choreography for everyone to follow along btw the choreography with finger movements is actually sign language!
+ if you’re interested bts (mostly RM) talked about this era and how it didn’t feel right for them and felt disappointed that these songs (the english singles; dynamite/butter/ ptd) were doing so good and even got nominated for awards yet none of their more meaningful and powerful songs to be treated the same way (which we all know is because they were in korean) so yes i understand why many people have negative opinions about this song but i still love listening to it !

Permission to Dance was meant to be a post pandemic, feel good, accessible (sign language as part of the dance) summer bop. The song was written by Ed Sheeran. I have no idea about the production stuff. It's definitely not my area. Based on the 2022 Festa dinner chat, I think the guys felt that they felt that they had veered in a direction that was not "them". Maybe it was pressure from their label who had gone through massive growth or maybe it was burn out and turning some of the production over to others, I don't really know. After this, they did the Proof anthology album with Korean songs For Youth and Run BTS. These songs were the more personal songs, written by them about them. I don't want to say that it was a fail, but definitely a learning experience that will help them learn and grow. The guys took their hiatus from group activities and said that they felt that they needed to work on growing as artists and personally. Since the "hiatus" we have seen some interesting and amazing collaborations and solo work. They always bill themselves as "J-Hope of BTS" or "Rm of BTS" when releasing these solo projects. They are still BTS and intend to stay that way.

I think it does have to do with the company but I did notice the voice processing and more autotune from MOTS era. I also started to notice more English names in the songwriting and producing credits and the credits getting longer (it used to mainly be Suga, RM, Jhope with one or two of Bighit inhouse producers). Which I think has to do with the expansion of the company.
I do remember though RM had a vlive after a PTD concert and he said very soon they will handle their music from start to finish on their own.

    • @wendyraye1
      @wendyraye1 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I've always wondered if the over production with auto tune type stuff to work with their voices included trying to fine tune the English. When they sign live you can hear a lot more of their Accents (love Jin when he sings the word permission, his accent is adorable) but that has always just been a theory of mine.

    • @nuhkyah23
      @nuhkyah23 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@wendyraye1 well maybe but they have the chance to do several takes of the same lines just to get the pronunciation correct when they are doing the studio recording.

It's not my favorite BTS song.
But I respect their purpose of releasing this song.
And they used sign language in choreo.
This song is for everyone who wants to enjoy their normal life without covid19.
    Thanks💜💜💜

This was a pandemic song meant to just bring a smile. I think Ed Sheeran wrote it for them. They even kept the dancing basic for people to dance along. I think they sang it in front of the UN. I get what you are saying. If anything, it shows the difference between how it is when it’s not their song. Did you notice the masks coming off? It was kind of a public service announcement type song.

I hope you don’t get any flack for your honest, yet still kind, criticism of PTD. I will say that there are MANY Army who did not like this song for a variety of reasons. While some of their English releases received divided opinions, I feel that PTD definitely ended up being one of their least liked songs to the point where many fans were purposely not watching it because they did not like the direction of the sound and production. However, I will say that the meaning of the song was very wholesome and the dance incorporated sign language beautifully. Music is subjective in the end but, I can say for myself, I have not listened to PTD more than a couple times.

I like this song. It is, by far, not my favorite from BTS, but it does make me smile and it's extremely catchy. Having said that, I think it was intentionally an American style pop song, and that says more about American pop than anything else lol. Western pop should be taking lessons from these guys, but hey..what do I know lol. As always, love the honesty here. Thank you!

No you aren’t tripping. I’m a hard core army but this is like one of my least fav songs from them. This was more recent and there was a lot of suspect with pretty decent evidence from the boys suggesting they were being used like machines and had a significant push to cater to American audiences. I’m American but I don’t believe the full English songs are their best songs.

I have a different take on this song and the FESTA conversation. I never heard anything like "we were being used like machines" from them at all. What I heard was that they were tired after 7-8 years of non-stop music creation and promotion, and they were having a hard time being creative. They also told us that with "Black Swan, " which was released in 2020. They have told us repeatedly that they had plans - BIG plans - that included a world tour of MOTS 7...and all of it was scrapped. Those plans also included them doing what they're doing now (individual projects and military service) that was to start after the end of the MOTS tour at the end of 2020-ish. Those plans did NOT include marking time for months on end, nor did they include releasing more music (other than Proof and the three songs on that album, which I believe they did have planned and just pushed back)....so they didn't have anything ready, and if we know anything about BTS and Big Hit, it's that they are usually READY-READY months and years in advance. But, the pandemic was an enormous curveball, and they literally said themselves that they were basically winging it as soon as that happened. The pandemic produced Dynamite, which was a huge commercial success and gave them opportunities they otherwise wouldn't have had, and then Butter....followed by PTD. RM said he recogized themselves through Dynamite and Butter...but after that....the inference was "not so much."
Bottom line is in my opinion any idea that BTS was being used in any way is just patently false. They never said that. What they said is that they (and their label) were winging it - they were making decisions as they went along, as best as they could. They were always doing what they thought was right. SUGA literally said this in the FESTA.
So, no this song isn't really a "BTS" feeling song. It IS a feel-good song, and if you can get over the fact that it isn't "BTS-y" and let it just make you happy, it's a good song. Is it a BS&T or ON or Black Swan? Nope. But, it wasn't even meant to BE, let alone meant to be a typical BTS song.

there's a tarot reader who is an Army from their beginnings who spoke of what Ed Sheeran "did to BTS" with this song lol, can't paraphrase what she said well, it sounded funny. this is probably my least favorite BTS song even though i definitely like it, they don't really have one bad song. i like that they have sign language in the choreo that is the best reason this song is special.

Rolling Stone included Dynamite in their list of 500 Greatest Songs of All Time (#347). And Butter is a good song, both Dynamite and Butter are both much stronger than Permission to Dance in my opinion.

It’s ok to state your honest opinion on the processing. I would rather hear this than someone being fake and gushing over every song just for ratings. Your perspective is from the technical side, it’s OK. Not my favorite son either but I like it. Where else can you see Emo Cowboy spinning Jungkook? 🤣. Also they named a whole tour after this- the first time after’Rona they got to see ARMY in person. They had a couple of online PTD concerts then did LA, Seoul and Vegas in person.

I honestly agree with you regarding the overprocess thing. I love this song, okay, as you said, this song makes me happy. But not gonna lie, when I first heard it, the way they, IDK, they added effects? or auto-tune? or the way they produced? or compressed? their voices just sounds unnatural. Their raw vocals are gold, we knew it. I wish they didn't do what they've done to their voices in this final projects. That's why after watching the MV, I usually watch their live performance of this song because this song is good, their raw vocals is way better, and I want to hear this good happy song being sung in their beautiful raw vocals. The overprocess thing is the only one that bothers me. The rests are good. I really love this song because it never fails to make me happy💜

You're right, it's a surface level pop song. This is why we cringe when Western show hosts keep asking them when they'll do an all-English album. They can't express real emotions when they have to focus on just pronouncing the words correctly.

    Thank you for your reaction!
This was the first full MV I saw from BTS back in 2021, on the first day I discovered them. At the time I was suffering from major depression, physical injuries, and severe illness. This song caught me so hard, and finding BTS at that time saved my life.
After this I ended up watching every single BTS MV I could find in a short amount of time, and PTD was never my favorite of all the songs I was taking in.
Howver, I went to the PTD concerts in LA and Vegas and watched this live multiple times. They performed this as the last song, with live vocals and no overprocessing, with tons of colorful confetti swirling around, huge balls bouncing around the audience, and 50k+ ARMY singing and dancing along. At LA, it was the first time we'd been able to have a concert like this since the pandemic started. We all had to wear masks in the venues, but we were still so grateful to be there, to be with BTS in person. And they were obviously ecstatic to be there, they built an entire concert series around this one song.
The members of BTS always had such joyful looks on their faces at the end of PTD concerts while singing this song, and running around the stage to wave at ARMY. I highly disagree with anyone who thinks BTS didn't love this song for what it gave. Maybe the studio version was over processed, but they gave it their ALL in person. They *obviously loved the song*. Anyone who says otherwise, I think misinterpreted BTS's words at Festa 2022.
I personally think the disappointment BTS talked about at Festa had to do with the fact that BTS had to put off their plans for solo works and enlistment because of the pandemic. They got so much backlash because from the Korean media and antis because of this, and they were really tired from not just the pandemic, but also the decision to continue making group music during the pandemic that never seemed to end. I think they were joyful to be there for ARMY, but having all their plans derailed that they'd carefully gone through in order to not lose their love for music, I'm sure it was extremely exhausting to do a complete 180 on their plans. After reading the translations of other ARMY that gave better context than the original subtitles, most ARMY I know agree with this.
I would honestly recommend you ALWAYS pair live performances when you're watching a song, even if you're doing it on your own time. Many of BTS's studio songs are masterpieces, but BTS absolutely shines in their live performances. And I've loved every single live performance of this song I've seen. You may not change your mind, but if it's the overprocessing you don't like, maybe you will 😊

Thank you for the honest review! You're not alone! Many of us are huge BTS fans but this song in particular is a big let down for us. Of all the songs I've heard from BTS (about 150), it's the only one that I truly don't like. They didn't have their hands in it and I think that's why musically it's a flop for me. I do appreciate the positive vibes it gave for the pandemic and the easier dancing with sign language to include people and create a fun viral dance craze. We needed light hearted fun! But, I think the boys even were disappointed with this one as they didn't mention it when talking about what they achieved in this era. Namjoon talked about feeling a loss of control of what the band had become I feel was somewhat referencing the overproduced music in this era.

It's probably the one I like the less among their "English" songs... The message and vibe is great, and it's Dynamite and Butter that made me discover them more, but I guess that once you dig in their other songs you get the all view on their talent, and these songs kinda blended in the background for me. PTD seemed too much for me too, and lacked this rawness and poetry that I learned to appreciate in BTS songs.
I didn't know that Ed Sheeran did this song, and to be honest, I really fancy Make it right a lot more, but I get their purpose on this and how the covid crisis probably influenced their music and goals. Still pretty new and I probably lack vision on the whole picture though !

It would help you tremendously to understand their songs if you go to the synopsis first which usually gives you the background on why they do their particular songs and what they are trying to convey. This song in particular was in reference to the pandemic if you noticed the masks everyone was wearing ... I sort of got the feeling they were tackling in their own way along with Ed Sheeran the government restraints that were put on the world not just the US due to covid. The one thing that they could not put limits on was our music and dance. But as always they are very good at hiding or camouflaging the actual intent.

The feel good vibe really worked its magic even more in that setting and the live performance aspect gives it that rawness. Ahh from what I read in asoect who was producers, all are American, Ed write the song for them, but production was american team.
I simply enjoy this song, and yes there is procesing in few places too much obvious for ear, but lives performances sound really good, watch some (like watch for example UN performance of PTD) even for yourself too see how they do it live.
Dance practice is fun too, but watching performance you will see choreo too.
At the end of day I don't really care about procesing that much, like I really like the vibe of this song, a lot of people were really agnist6this song ehh (then don't listen), but also were like diplaesed that another english song, why they do it, even some people started talking that company made them, and they said that with this they also started feeling like too much, but it is not like they regned it or something.
Especially when the reason was to give hope and good vibes and light a mood a little when we were 1,5 into pandemic, some countries started to loosen up all safe things, that is also why they take of masks.
Also "You don't need permission to dance" in pandemic you had to have permission to do some things, and dance isn't something you need Permission
Actually I love R&B remix, but it is also very procesed, but I really like mood that is there.

In general I like this song but you're right about the over-production of it. It's better to listen to live, certainly. The message is a good one, released near the "end" of the pandemic. The video is fun and well-made. They made the basic choreography very simple so anyone could do it, and it includes some sign language for a special touch.
But it's easy to pick up that this is not a BTS-made song - it's part of their...campaign...to enter the American music market and that shows. Dynamite and Butter are better songs, but even those feel less personal and more targeted. And that's okay - the guys were trying something and it worked for the most part. But it's pretty clear to see that they were a bit lost with their direction as a band because of the pandemic. And it's no wonder, once they told us how they had planned to do their big world tour and then take a break from group work to do their solo albums. Covid really derailed their schedule for everything.
They seem back on track now, so we can enjoy RM's neon-yellow hair and Suga singing (!) and dance for a few minutes along with them.

I do love that it's an inclusive MV and that it included sign language, and it's just fun. Now interestingly they did a remix and that I liked much better. Which I think they had more to do with.

I met bts through this song and that was a no from me, I remember thinking they were just too poppy and I wasn’t going to like them until a friend of mine showed me their other stuff and now I’m an army. I agree with you, this song doesn’t sound as natural and for me it’s a boomer because there are people (like me back then) who only know them for these american pop songs (butter, dynamite and ptd) and they don’t have anyone to tell them everything else bts is. But overall I understand they were experimenting and that’s ok, I still dance to this song and I enjoy it, it’s just not my favorite :)

This song got me through the pandemic so much and this song was in there permission to dance concert in LA and Vegas. I love all there songs I know there are armies who like it to but not all but I for one love this song especially since it has sign language in it. But thus song is to help all of us and them get through the pandemic. But I love this song.
