Up until something like the 1980s I believe it was, the State of West (by God) Virginia was truly the only illegal State in the Union. They separated from Virginia without permission whatsoever. And a Congress at war opened the door to let them in. So VA and WV got together finally and agreed on a formalized separation.

Washington D. C. Is called the "United States." The same as the 50 states in union called the "united States of America," so I don't think they have a problem with confusing people as it seems to be the point when you realize what damage that has caused the people of the states whom most are citizens of the "United States" for federal tax purposes according to "United States" law, even though the don't live there lol.
A bit of context for “California.” Based on what I have learned, there was an old Spanish legend about an island of black Amazons, rich in gold and where griffins lived, ruled by a Muslim Queen Calafia. The Spanish were under the impression that at least part of California was an island at first, so they named it in reference to the legend.

By the way, here in Florida they pronounce Deseret as "Dez-ah-RAY", with a silent T at the end. Oh, and "Conch" in Conch Republic is pronounced "Konk" and not like "Launch". And technically Key West and a few additional Florida Keys do secede every year, establish the Conch Republic, declare war on the US, surrender, then request foreign aid - all in the course of a single day!

Fun fact: The reasoning for Deseret not being a state wasn't because it was too big, it was because the representative for the proposed state was about 20 minutes late and the stakes of land he'd planned on claiming were already claimed by the time he got there. And so, they had to settle on for what is now Utah.
Plus, you know, it was totally unreasonable for 3,000 Mormon settlers to be able to claim half of the American west as their property just because. And because Mormons had tried to form their own country. And also their founder was killed in a shootout with federal troops.

Until 1976 killing a Mormon got you a bounty in Missouri, so not really welcome there. Looking at actual compliance with the law, Deseret met the requirements for statehood while others (Wyoming, Nevada) did not. Nevada was a quick add during the Civil War to ensure northern majority during congressional votes. History has all sorts of nuance. If you have ever been to Utah or Nevada, from a mid 19th century view point there isn't much to fight over.
The name "California" derives from a 16th Century romance novel written by a Spanish author named Garcia Ordonez de Montalvo. The novel described an island, very close to the Garden of Eden, full of gold, which was ruled by strong and beautiful black women.
Look at Idaho's cities. Half of them have remained unchanged from what the French named them, a few names are borrowed from the natives and the rest are generic.

the implications of the split would make it virtually permanent, because as 4 new states they would have 8 new senators, while their congressional representation would remain otherwise the same, I doubt the new state would try and combine as it would mean a loss of representation

@@mwi3865 Lincoln was actually a great president, he achieved many things in office, of course the first one is obvious, he freed the slaves, and while I understand it was more for the war than anything, Lincoln himself disliked slavery, not just slavery would have ended too, if Lincoln had not been assassinated, racism would have been dealt with quicker. Lincoln also had great economic policies. He also made sure the U.S recognized countries like Liberia and Haiti, both of which had a history with slavery. Lincoln also kept the nation together in a time of great conflict. In my opinion, he is one of, if not the best president we've had. Some may disagree with me, and I understand Lincoln had his flaws, but I'd take him over any other president besides Washington. Also, Lincoln actually sounds like a decent name for a state, sure, it is somewhat odd, but I think it would fit for a state.

The U.P. has been the redheaded stepchild peninsula every since it became a part of Michigan. While you mention Alaska, there's a lot of history missing. Prior to WWII, the portion of Alaska west of the 141st parallel was mostly devoid of population. Bob Bartlett was Alaska's last territorial delegate to the U.S. House and later first U.S. Senator. He suggested splitting the territory into three parts and seeking immediate statehood only for the more populous southeastern portion. This was before oil was discovered in commercial quantities, one of the factors which changed things. Also, Alaska has an active homegrown secession movement which began in 1973. One can search for the Alaskan Independence Party to find more information.

According to the Islanders that I've spoken with , they never wanted to be part of the United States anyway, so........ maybe one of the other 3 U.S. Territories or Island groups might be more reasonably interested.
Eastern Oregon is making it's most serious effort to leave in years, but partially because it's not populated enough to be a state(Roughly 350 thousand people tops) and partially because it becoming a state would give it too many electoral votes for comfort and Oregon stated they'd block that, it's instead trying to join Idaho, which is far easier to do legally speaking and also doesn't threaten the political balance of power much. (+1 ECV for Idaho and -1 ECV for Oregon). So the State of Jefferson idea is dead. Eastern Washington isn't involved in the Idaho plan, but unlike Eastern Oregon they're better off economically and have enough people to be a state (1.4 million) so maybe they'll try a State of Lincoln thing if the Greater Idaho plan works for Oregon.

I just looked up the whole "land of the Caliph" thing and it's much more interesting than he let's on. "California" appears to be a Spanish fabrication of the root word "khalifa" (meaning "Caliph" as we understand it today) in reference to a fictional character named Calafia who is essentially an Arabic/Amazon warrior-queen. Her story consists of her raising an army of female warriors, flying that army to Constantinople with a flock of griffins, being defeated and converted from Islam to Christianity, and being married off to a knight. The character is entirely fictional but was nonetheless very well known in Spanish culture at the time, so I'm not entirely uncertain that the name simply means "the land of Calafia" or "the land of the warrior-queen"

The true origin of California's name comes from a Spanish writer who knew about the barren land north of Mexico (south of Mexico in his day as most of California belonged to Mexico) and had made it the setting of his book. He described it as a "hot oven" in order to convey a sense of hellish temperature. Derived from the Latin callidus fornax and supplemented with a feminine "ia" Latin suffix the literal meaning is "hot oven."

The proposed state of "Superior" actually has an interesting history and has had several iterations over the years. The first of which was actually proposed by Thomas Jefferson when the area was still part of the Northwest Territory. Called "Sylvania" the area included what is now northern Wisconsin as well as parts of northeastern Minnesota, as well as the U.P. Other proposals under the name "Ontonagon" have existed as well. Sometimes including northeast counties of Wisconsin and counties on the tip of Michigans lower peninsula. These proposals made more sense in the past when the mining industry was still very strong in the U.P. At one point in time a large share of iron and copper in the USA came from the area. Not so much these days.

There’s still a lot of people in areas of Northern California that wanna be the state of Jefferson, it didn’t stop in 2013. If you drive through there there’s plenty of signs that say “state of Jefferson.” Also the 2013 thing was a stupid idea that lumped parts of the state together that made entirely no sense and was designed by some Silicon Valley prick to basically make things better for him and his rich buddies in Silicon Valley.
Every once in a while I've also seen the idea popping up every now and then to rezone Washington and Oregon, redrawing the state line to follow the Cascade mountain range, making the states east and west of each other vs north and south
Your California etymology is incorrect. California was given the name after conquistadors named the land originally “Califia”, which was a mythical island paradise. Which makes more sense than land of the caliphate, considering there really isn’t any relevance.

The man who proposed the name Idaho claimed it was Shoshone for “Gem of the mountain” and is the reason Idaho has the nickname of the Gem state. It doesn’t mean that, but the name stuck.

If you have ever been to Utah or Nevada, from a mid 19th century view point there isn't much to fight over.

Lincoln also had great economic policies. He also made sure the U.S recognized countries like Liberia and Haiti, both of which had a history with slavery. Lincoln also kept the nation together in a time of great conflict. In my opinion, he is one of, if not the best president we've had. Some may disagree with me, and I understand Lincoln had his flaws, but I'd take him over any other president besides Washington. Also, Lincoln actually sounds like a decent name for a state, sure, it is somewhat odd, but I think it would fit for a state.

While you mention Alaska, there's a lot of history missing. Prior to WWII, the portion of Alaska west of the 141st parallel was mostly devoid of population. Bob Bartlett was Alaska's last territorial delegate to the U.S. House and later first U.S. Senator. He suggested splitting the territory into three parts and seeking immediate statehood only for the more populous southeastern portion. This was before oil was discovered in commercial quantities, one of the factors which changed things.
Also, Alaska has an active homegrown secession movement which began in 1973. One can search for the Alaskan Independence Party to find more information.

Eastern Oregon is making it's most serious effort to leave in years, but partially because it's not populated enough to be a state(Roughly 350 thousand people tops) and partially because it becoming a state would give it too many electoral votes for comfort and Oregon stated they'd block that, it's instead trying to join Idaho, which is far easier to do legally speaking and also doesn't threaten the political balance of power much. (+1 ECV for Idaho and -1 ECV for Oregon). So the State of Jefferson idea is dead.
Eastern Washington isn't involved in the Idaho plan, but unlike Eastern Oregon they're better off economically and have enough people to be a state (1.4 million) so maybe they'll try a State of Lincoln thing if the Greater Idaho plan works for Oregon.
They should make a law that new states must have unique names, no compass directions.

I just looked up the whole "land of the Caliph" thing and it's much more interesting than he let's on.
"California" appears to be a Spanish fabrication of the root word "khalifa" (meaning "Caliph" as we understand it today) in reference to a fictional character named Calafia who is essentially an Arabic/Amazon warrior-queen. Her story consists of her raising an army of female warriors, flying that army to Constantinople with a flock of griffins, being defeated and converted from Islam to Christianity, and being married off to a knight. The character is entirely fictional but was nonetheless very well known in Spanish culture at the time, so I'm not entirely uncertain that the name simply means "the land of Calafia" or "the land of the warrior-queen"
This false story has been making it's rounds for years. The true origin of California's name comes from a Spanish writer who knew about the barren land north of Mexico (south of Mexico in his day as most of California belonged to Mexico) and had made it the setting of his book. He described it as a "hot oven" in order to convey a sense of hellish temperature. Derived from the Latin callidus fornax and supplemented with a feminine "ia" Latin suffix the literal meaning is "hot oven."

The proposed state of "Superior" actually has an interesting history and has had several iterations over the years. The first of which was actually proposed by Thomas Jefferson when the area was still part of the Northwest Territory. Called "Sylvania" the area included what is now northern Wisconsin as well as parts of northeastern Minnesota, as well as the U.P.
Other proposals under the name "Ontonagon" have existed as well. Sometimes including northeast counties of Wisconsin and counties on the tip of Michigans lower peninsula.
These proposals made more sense in the past when the mining industry was still very strong in the U.P. At one point in time a large share of iron and copper in the USA came from the area. Not so much these days.

There’s still a lot of people in areas of Northern California that wanna be the state of Jefferson, it didn’t stop in 2013. If you drive through there there’s plenty of signs that say “state of Jefferson.” Also the 2013 thing was a stupid idea that lumped parts of the state together that made entirely no sense and was designed by some Silicon Valley prick to basically make things better for him and his rich buddies in Silicon Valley.
They could always leave California, defect to russia, we'd all be better off.

Your California etymology is incorrect. California was given the name after conquistadors named the land originally “Califia”, which was a mythical island paradise.
Which makes more sense than land of the caliphate, considering there really isn’t any relevance.

Boise was named after the Boise River which runs through the city, the word Boise, is actually a french word meaning Wooded, therefore the rivers name is the "Wooded River".
Coeur D'Alene (Which is in Northern Idaho) is also a French word meaning "Heart of an awl"

The man who proposed the name Idaho claimed it was Shoshone for “Gem of the mountain” and is the reason Idaho has the nickname of the Gem state. It doesn’t mean that, but the name stuck.
At least Utah is named after the Ute tribe.
