  • In this Part 5 video, Tony, the owner of Tim’s Custom Cabinets sets, levels, and fastens the toe kicks for the bottom cabinets to the floor, then supervises as James and Thomas place the bottom cabinets on top of the toe kicks. Tony then predrills one side of the adjoining cabinets and carefully fastens them together, making sure that the cabinet edges meet perfectly, and all cabinets remain level to assure a flat surface for the quartz countertop. Tony then instructs James and Thomas on the procedure for attaching the cabinets to the walls, and for installing the full-length refrigerator enclosure and adjoining microwave cabinet, which they complete after Tony has departed.
Background: Having spent four years of our retirement in a small ranch style house built in 1978, we were ready to remodel the worn-out farm style kitchen. But the timing was bad. We were in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and most contractors in the area were overbooked and unavailable, even for an estimate. Then one day as we again passed by Tim’s Custom Cabinets, located at a new round-about in a residential area, we stopped in to inquire if they could give us an estimate. A month later, we sat down with Tony, the owner of Tim's Custom Cabinets and signed a contract for a major kitchen remodel. As it turned out, this remodel project took excruciatingly long to complete and was extremely disruptive to our daily life.
The total cost: A lot of clams!

I wish I could build cabinets like that 😁 I was Tony’s builder for 8 years until I left for Ohio in 2014.

Good video..I have a question...Why do they take that part of the floor away? Why dont they put the cabinets on the previous floor?

They often do, but in this situation it was a matter of timing, and the previous flooring was laminate, which is not good in wet areas. Thank you for your comment!

Was this video filmed in the 1970's? The only way to level Toe Kicks is to use a laser level. Using a spirit level is totally inaccurate. How do you know one side of the room is at the exact same height as the opposite side of the room?? This is why when the counter tops went on you had massive gaps under neath the top!!

Is the contractor using an impact drill to secure the toe kick base to the floor? How would it be attached if you have concrete subfloors? This is probably a dumb question so please forgive me. I am new and trying to learn all I can. Thanks for sharing your video. Very helpful!

often times toekicks aren't attached to the subfloor for cabinets. a island maybe. cabinets go on the toekick, attached together, and then attached to the studs. they're not really going anywhere, if you really want to you can drive a couple nails or screws through.

For concrete floors you can drill holes in concrete with a masonry bit then use those blue tapcon screws. Like rabbyt said, for cabinets along a wall you generally don't screw them to the floor. But for islands or peninsulas yes you do.
