Speaking as an AOW III veteran now, the tactical combat looks very similar. And the refinements even in that game literally seem to be never-ending. Specific unit abilities, hero upgrades, environmental effects, unit synergies/formations, can all play a significant role, and choosing which is suitable to sway a seemingly impossible battle into your favour is really the core of replay-ability.
i have played AoW since the beginning. and this itteration of the game is just bonkers. faction creation, world creation...it is very overwhelming at first, but if you get the hang of it, then it goes smooth.the customazation for your racewhile playing the game is great. holy rodendts with angel wings? yup, you can, demon worshipping toadswith demon wings? yup, you can.combo's are huge in this game. i can wait till i can play it on may 2nd 🙂🙂🙂🙂
Very mucho exacto same perspective from me. Also, AoW2's soundtrack has yet to be rivaled by anything else than HOMM4. In that regard, I don't think AoW4 will even try to compete, though. Let's hope soundtrack files will be... Customizable. If it's the case, well. I'll be VERY happy with the game.
I personally still prefer the first one over the others, but i am pretty sure nostalgia and me abusing the heroes and using incarnates had alot to do with that. Also do you consider aow wizards throne 2 or are aow2 both wizards throne and shadow magic. I think i preferred shadow magic over wizards throne just a tiny bit. Both lose out on first game partially cause i really like having one main character/hero/wizard. The follow ups force you to play different heroes/wizards in scenarios. Was main reason i liked planetfall less; the original age if wonders pretty much let you play an entire huge campaign with one single ruler hero that carried progress throughout entire story.

This harkens back memories of the Heroes of might and Magic series and a really old and not quite so good game called Lords of Magic. This contains elements from both games but is much more detailed.
Very thorough. Thank you for the tip about the boosts. I've been watching several other tutorials and most of them seem to leave out the explanations of some of the important things that they seem to think are a given. Obviously, if we are watching these tutorials we don't necessarily know about such things.

The mount body traits actually change certain unit of each culture to cavalry with that mount. For barbarian it's furies (T2 ranged) for astral it's their T3 battle mage as examples! Those mounts give the unit the ability of the mount which is great

What an awesome overview! It's pretty clear this is not only a major upgrade and a true sequel to AOW3, but I'm just going to call it here: one of the greatest 4x games of all time.
I’m definitely doing dark elves for my first play through. I really liked planet fall and this game looks like a step up in every regard. The Skarn or whatever the dlc lizard people were called was my favorite unit to use. Looking forward to a lot of content coverage of this game!
AoW3 we played most (90%) of tournaments in PBEM and the turn timer was 1 day (; there are inherited issue with simultaneous turns as 1st to react and some honor system that you will give them like 30 sec. to move if they don't want to be reached ): but anyway - serious tournaments are almost never played .... online in a TURN based strategy game :D
true, but i only play multiplayer with my brother and friends, no randoms, so we have our own "house rules" like who can initiate a battle and so on during simultaneous turns. no turn timer needed
Good guide, but in the future I would recommend when doing an introductory video, don't choose pantheon unlocks (like you did with Talented Collectors) as most viewers won't have those unlocked yet while trying to follow along.

Does anybody know how the leader affinities effected the realm affinities? I've annexed a vassal got 2 new leaders and 3 affinity for nature while the leaders have combind 6 affinity for nature and 3 for chaos (where I didn't get any at all) On spells has one a chaos spell and one a nature spell.

That's a lot of customization. Not sure how fun it's going to be yet, but at least they put in some effort. Unlike with planetfall, with was basically just a (bad) reskin of AoE3.
I came to the video for answers and just like everything else I've found on the internet, it's useless. The game tells me I can annex, i go to the city and see which provinces I can annex, but there is no button to do so. The internet seems to think everyone knows everything about the game and the game is awful at explaining this one feature. The game says I can annex but hasn't shown me how to do it. I'm going to try rewatching that part of your video again because maybe I missed it.
This game is published by Paradox so I don't understand why Paradox doesn't use the same format for EUROPA UNIVERSALIS and HEARTS OF IRON. The battles would be so much more interesting and the game as well.
Maybe someone asked already, but why play a mage main when practically all their combat spells don't work in enemy combat zones? Makes them pretty useless during seige fights or any fight in an enemy area.
Your spells are only blocked in hostile domain if the enemy has a spell jammer there. (and if he does, you can pillage it, can be a good idea before a major siege)
This is so dam annoying. Why do all the games I really get into come out all at the same dam time? First I was playing Hogwarts and really enjoying that. Then Wartales came out I think last week. That game wasn't even on my radar. I just saw a feed for it on youtube and thought it would be a fun game to play for breaks from Hogwarts. Well, I haven't even looked at Hogwarts since Wartales came out. It's like Xcom2 but medieval. And I think I got it for $30? Then Steam never even gave me an alert this game was coming out for some reason and I didn't discover it was until two days before release. And I was enjoying Wartales so much I was hesitant to spend the $50 to buy AoW4. But I did. After a bit of a learning curve, I am enjoying this as much as Wartales. But of course, it comes out the last day of my vacation. Grrr! With Diablo 4 a month away and Cityskylines2 maybe by the end of the summer, this will be a really good year for gaming for me.

Turn timers are useful in Multiplayer. Paired with Simultaneous turns it's a lot of how you get multiplayer to be close to playable.

Are the cats barbarian culture units the same as the human barbarian culture units as you showed us the human ones.
I wish the game had a way to restart/reroll the map like you can in Civilization. Having to exit to main menu every time sucks.

As a first time 4x player, do these types of games play better on console or pc?
