When I was overseas - gone Asiatic -- in the mid '70s, a SSgt in my Avionics shop said when he was a Cpl, he was in-country at DaNang with a Phantom squadron. [Before he got into Harriers.] His Dad or his Uncle sent him a Thompson SMG, which he liked better than the M-16s. They were sometimes sniped at, or rocketted, or got incoming mortars. He said when he went out on the flightline to work on an F4, he'd lean his Tommy Gun up against the fuselage side, and the snipers in the bush went quiet.

Unfortunate outcome on the F-4 paint but that would be a challenge for anyone using AS-16 to get pre shading results. One problem is light, mist coats of paint can produce a textured finish. For your consideration, Max. Leave the model for a day or two , wet sand all of the upper fuselage that is meant to be Light Gray with 1000 grit or finer to get an even surface finish. Done the same way a clear coat on vehicles are sanded to remove orange peel, made flat before polishing. This will also help feather the edges of the area that has the removed paint. Almost all injection molded scale models have exaggerated recessed panel lines and rivet details. I fill them to the depth that is more scale accurate so you probably will end up with a more realistic finish if you do the above. For that reason I would sand the wings as well. If AS-16 is sprayed, do an even, wet coat and post shade/weather. It may be wise to paint a small area to verify that the new paint layer will go over the old without problems.
Great looking work afterall that fussing about. Both aircraft - 👍👍x👍👍 On another note - right now, we have, more or less, the same amount of snow that you probably have on the ground. Well, of course north of us is another matter. It takes a while for 6' of snow to melt (we only had 5"). Over the weekend, some parts of Alberta were warmer than Florida. Saying all this - no doubt we will get dumped on too, sooner than later.
SCARY GODZILLA MUSIC 😅😂😃😂😅😃 You know what I like to try BLACK CHARCOAL STICKS 80 grit sandpaper… Sand a stick down to powder A Testers fuzzy end GLUE STICKS…. Just decant the can paint. Spray it into a spare spray paint lid and let it de-gas the airbrush it on. Mix a lighter gray or white and airbrush the panels as a weathering layer.
Weathering ? The worst F-4s that I ever saw were planes that had been "Cross Decked". That was done during the Vietnam war. The planes remained on the ship, but the squadron personnel rotated back home and a fresh crew came out. The planes ended up being in pretty bad shape corrosion wise. They can be spotted on carrier videos because of being touched up with every shade of gray known to man. You can also see patches of zinc chromate primer, of which there were 2 shades. The brighter yellow was lacquer based, and the darker green was an enamel base. There may have been some epoxy primer around, but that was still a fairly new product. "Cross Decking" was dropped, because of the wear, and corrosion on the aircraft wasn't worth it. Even the planes need a rest and some Depot time. 🙂
At 3:12 in the video, I kinda liked the heavy weathering look because you can see everything good..... the decals will cover a lot of it. Then touch it up....that phantom is going to be epic dude. 1/32....what is it like 15 inches?....

I wonder if the pigments are coarser in a rattle can? I know good airbrush paint pigments are milled to ridiculous specs.
I've done both the Hasegawa and Academy 1/72 kits of the A-37. Very similar. 😊

I built the Aurora model of the A-37 eons ago.
Thank you.
