The easiest way to improve is to remember you are sculpting a 3d object by drawing it and not an image of an object. If you scribble or shade it, it will feel 2 dimensional and flat, while with the methods you're talking about, you are giving the object life and volume. The more you study how an object is build with it's anatomy, understanding what kind of shapes create it and how to put it in a certain perspective, the better you get at drawing. :) Great tutorial! Another thing that helps is to use a charcoal pencil or just a normal pencil that you can cut so you get more than just a tip which helps with 'shading' or blocking bigger areas. Thus leaving a mechanical pencil for details/lineart only. Proko shows a lot of great examples of this aswell if anyone is interested!
@@JelArts Had to search the term because I wasn't familiar with the item but yes those seem fantastic for broader tonal work too! Anything that can make your hand more loose and have bigger strokes helps a ton so you're not as concentrated on a detail of the piece. I have so much trouble understanding shading and this was SUPER helpful to me!!! Bc it gave me something simple to understand shading follows "if" the object was 3d, follow those lines! And like I had never had someone explain it like that in detail before with examples! I finally get it, or think I do anyway. I'll be sure to practice
Thank you SO MUCH for this video! It helped me a ridiculous amount and I *really* needed this right now! (Also I'm not sure if any other people have said this, but your voice is really soothing and nice; at least, I think so)
hm, ive always done this, i didnt know people didnt do it. either way, this is super helpful for artists struggling with flatness in their drawings. “directional shading” is actually pretty important for learning abt form.
YES! I have been looking for videos like this for a long time, but yours is really helpful! I’ve been going in shading lately (over the past 5 weeks) and I was relieved to find that you have advice on shading. Thanks, JelArts!
This was extremely helpful, I often forget to such a basic thing ESPECIALLY when drawing semi realistic stylised animals and for my cartoon works. That apple example at the start is excellent, really amazing volume to it, done so quickly too! This video would have helped so much when I was beginning because even after my high school art teacher taught the class about shading I just didn't get it, you are a very eloquent, easy to understand teacher!
Omg THX ! Learned some new things . The 3d form shading technique thing is really helpful .. Idk how to explain it But THANKS AGAIN . I LOVE YOUR ART !
Jel your art is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo coooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooollllllllllllllllllllllllll!!
Very very informative for little things curvature of things to give them more dept/character. Saving this in my art stuff playlist for future references~
Thank you so much for making this video. None of my teachers have ever taught to me shade that way. Now i can make my art look better. Thank you so much!
Thank u for doing this, it helps alot :) It makes such a big difference and makes the drawing look more realistic even though it's like a comic(?) style :D
Jel: **shows the apple shading example** this is a bad example but- Me: **mind blown** wha- how- what is this kind of magic?! How did you- wha- MY BEAN BRAIN HAS EXPLODED IN A MICROWAVE FROM THIS!!
Fangirled for a moment, but on another note; thank you for these tips. You've showed me ways to improve as an artist, and you are a highlight to the artist community.
It is a question you are probably tired of hearing, What lead hardness do you prefer? Based on the line darkness and variety I was thinking it looked like a 4B. I have trouble getting the lighter lines using 4B/6B though so normally opt for a 2B most the time. Sadly my images lack a lot of contrast from the light to darker lines so I was thinking of trying 6B again. Do you have any thoughts on the topic?
I see you have finally revealed the secret to your power
It's good to share the wealth
Tedious person excuse me but I LOVE your profile pic

I use conte sticks in life drawing and it's definitely more effective for adding tone for sure!

Yes
It’s actually in the liver.

Yes but you need shavings of crayons with a douse of oil paints and chalk on the side
No, you just get arrested for murder.
