    After owning multiple trailers, I always recommend to start on the smaller side, and buy used. As you become more experienced and have a better idea of how you’ll be using your trailer, you can move up in size. If you buy used, and you’ve done your homework on pricing, and you keep it well maintained, you’ll sell it for almost what you paid. The last trailer I sold, I got $1k more than what I initially paid. RV’s are like boats, everyone thinks they’ll use it more than they actually do, so there are tons of used ones on the market. If you stay 26’ or less, you’ll be in that half ton truck market.

      A lot of us only want a 1/2 ton truck. Better on gas, and easier to get around town. Smaller trailers and 5th wheels are better suited for single , or even couples uses. My time is now! I plan on doing the RV life as soon as I can sell my condo!

    I've seen guys with half tons pulling supposedly "half-ton towable" fifth wheels and huge bumper-pulls. The honest ones will tell you about their 35 mph max speed on steeper grades and other issues associated with too-heavy trailers for their truck. Sure, if all you do is tow something on flat ground a few miles to park your trailer for the season, yes your Prius, um I mean half-ton will do it. However, I wholeheartedly agree with this video. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should do it. I drive a 2015 F-150 with the 5 liter v-8. When we purchased our trailer our target maximum empty weight was 5,000 pounds for this very reason. We wound up with a 2018 Highland Ridge Open Range 2410RL. It is slightly over the 5,000 pound mark. Our first trip with this rig was to Jackson Hole and Yellowstone. We've since used this rig for many other trips. I am so happy that we did not try to go heavier. In fact, my next truck for trailer towing will be at least a 3/4 ton truck but probably a 1 ton. I greatly look forward to the heavier and more stable truck, even with the trailer we have. Half-ton trucks are so much more vulnerable to "truck-suck" and other wind issues. For those shopping for a trailer for your half ton truck, do not believe the RV dealer who tells you what your truck will pull. If you have a half-ton, you need to keep it light. I've met MANY people who bought a heavier trailer only to find themselves back at the truck dealership to trade in their half-ton. Good job Big Truck RV - you're right on the money!

      I agree with what you said my dad towed a toy hauler once with his 14' f-150 with the 5.0 and it towed it but it certainly was way over what the towing compacity of the truck was. The trailer we normally tow and use the most is an inclosed 24 ft proline car hauler trailer and even that trailer is slightly over the towing compacity, thank God for the stoppers that sit on the axels lol but yeah my dad wants to upgrade to a toyhauler soon and is looking for 3/4 or 1 ton truck to tow the future toyhauler we get.

    I have towed a 9000lb trailer with a half ton that was rated at 9800lb capacity a couple of times and while it did ok you could definitely tell it was pushing the limit. Power was fine and brakes did fine with a trailer brake controller of course but I could imagine wind would make for a hairy ride. It was no windy when I moved the trailer, I am smarter than that! lol.
    The thing you also have to remember though is payload capacity. A lot of half ton trucks have pretty low payload so if you are pulling even a 6000lb trailer you have to remember that is probably 600lb tongue weight and your truck may only have a capacity of 1500 to 1800 depending on how many features the truck has. If you have 3 overweight Americans in your truck plus other miscellaneous items you can soon hit your payload limit.

    Regarding your stability statement; I would think a 7k lb trailer would be more stable than a 6k lb one. Given similar length trailer, a little heavier trailer would be more stable as far as wind and drag are concerned. Trailer design also plays a large part as my old ‘cut to fit’ Lippert framed trailer pulled worse than my newer ‘designed for the floor plan’ model Nash I have now. Tundra pulls, controls and stops my 7k lb trailer easily.

    I agree with the advice in general, specifically in regards to the affects of surface area on handling. I think everyone has seen that guy pulling a 30'plus multi-slide RV with a 1/2 ton and you can tell it is far exceeding what should be considered safe.
    That being said, I'd err on the side of saying this video is a little too conservative in terms of the maximum recommended size.
    In particular, the trailer is repeatedly referred to as a 6,000 lb camper.
    The camper has a dry weight of 3,794 lbs and a cargo capacity of 2,184. It's safe to say the dry weight is underestimated, but even if you assume 10%, that adds an additional 379 pounds.
    2,184-379(assumed options/propane)-300lbs (water) leaves you with 1,500 pounds of cargo.
    You'd have to try pretty hard to get 1,500 pounds of cargo in a camper this size.

    We bought a new Rockwood Roo 21SS earlier this year. We pull it with our F150 with the 5.0L engine. Same weight as this unit with lots more amenities. You are dead on correct about the wind resistance issue. The weight isn't too bad at lower speeds and taking off, it's the over 60mph driving that you really notice it behind you. At over 10ft tall exterior height, it would probably pull a lot better if it was a foot shorter, but the head room inside is worth it.

    Beg to differ. A long time dealer I go to is the dry weight of the trailer should be equal or less than the gvw on the pillar sticker. 7,000 the 2019 Chevy. Of course you need the proper weight distribution hitch and set up. Pull and STOP a 7,000 lb dry travel trailer with zero issues or sway using a 4 point Equalizer Hitch. And took the time to set it up.

    Back in the day that is all people had mostly half tons to tow with ..not to many people had heavy trucks ..now every body thinks you got to have a 3/4 or 3500 to hall or tow any thing..

    • @Ray092684
      @Ray092684 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure what you mean. The terms 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, 1 ton, etc all came from "back in the day". Heavier duty trucks are not new, they've always been around. 50 years ago, the average trailer, whether it be a camper, horse trailer, or whatever, were generally smaller and lighter. So you could get away with using a half ton. If you needed to haul a heavier trailer you got a heavier rated truck, just like today.

    If you are new to RV'ing id listen and stay well below like he says but if you aren't, and are use to towing, the rating on the truck is good. Remember to not exceed that weight because even if somebody hits you, it could be you at fault because of overloading. Leave some room for people too i have heard of cops making you weigh your rig , not sure how many are going to do that but why take a chance and ruin a trip.

    I've only watched a few videos but I'm finding them very useful. After reading through some of the comments you may consider doing a video on the little yellow sticker on the drivers door if you haven't already. Our new Ram 1500 is "rated" for 1800# payload but I only have 1524# after factory accessories and fuel. We'd kicked around 5th wheels but I'd need to loose 30# just to stay under GVWR with a 1300# pin weight. Settled on a 26BH (31') just shy of 6k dry but like you said TT have lots of surface area and wind resistance = wind speed x area^2.

    I use my camper a ton and everyone who asks, I recommend one of these. 21-23' max, 7' wide, low ceiling so you don't need a beast of a tow rig and cheap mpg. The trailer is the cheap part if you need a new tow rig. This trailer would be PERFECT for a young couple +1 small kid. Everyone with a bumper pull needs a weight distributing + sway setup. Don't skimp. They're worth the money they lower stress and driver fatigue. Happy trails!

    I have a 2002 F-150 and my trailer is 22' in length and empty/dry weighs about 4310 lbs. My gross combined weight is 6020. My truck pulls it just fine and I'm not even using a weight distributing hitch. I get no sway at all probably because it's still short enough plus my trailer came with the Lippert Equa-Flex equalizers installed in the suspension. This is an interesting trailer if you wanted to go somewhat long (25' feet) and cheap but looks half decent.

    • @BigTruckBigRV
      @BigTruckBigRV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure youre explaining your specs correctly. Your GCW can't be 6020 unless you truck has a GVW of only 1600lbs. I think you're trying to say your GVW of the trailer is 6020. Your combined weight would be closer to 12000lbs.
