  • I share advice on how I recommend changing your career to be a software engineer. I discuss my first software project as a chemical engineer undergrad working at a biotech startup in the customer service team, and how it got me my first job at Amazon Web Services.

Thank you, I want to pursue the same path, I went into chemical engineering 20 years ago and now I am ready for new course in my life.

Hi, do you have any suggestions for me to switch from CS to chemistry?

Have you tried to merge your software development skills with your chemical engineering knowledge yet? I’m on the same path, 2nd year as a full time developer but I still think about cheme a lot. I don’t want to complete leave it behind.

Would you say you would have been satisfied with where you are now had you not gone to (and through the process of) medical school?

That’s a good question, and I would say yes as I wouldn’t know what medical school was like if I hadn’t personally attended. I will also say that I am a lot happier outside of school, but I’m glad I had the opportunity to try it out.

Hi! I want to switch to chemical engineering or analytical chemistry from software engineering. What should I do? I have already taken gen Chem 1 and 2, ochem 1, analytical chemistry and advanced chemical analytics. I also took calc 1 to 3, linear algebra, and calculus physics. I am planning to do physical chemistry and computational chemistry next year.

You should take thermodynamics , physical chemistry , unit operations in chemical engineering, Transport phenomena,Process design and simulation after this l think you will be good to go

Hi Vincent, I'm actually a 2nd Chem Eng university student, who's looking to go into the software industry after uni. When you were interviewed for your position, what programming languages were you strong in, and did you have make any sort of projects to show to your interviewer? And just in general, what skills and abilities are employers looking for if applying for a software engineering/development position without a CS or CE degree?

Python was and is my main language. In terms of experience, I made a full stack web app in python with flask and hosted it so I could talk about it in interviews. I don’t think people care about your major, they want to see relevant experience and your programming abilities during the challenges.
