- Here is a short video where I show some of the tools that I used to rough trim the fiberglass cabin top for our group-built Van's aircraft RV-10.
I used an angle grinder with thin cut-off wheel as well as a flapper disk to remove a lot of material very quickly.
I used a 1/4" die grinder with a different type of flapper wheel to shape and contour the window openings along with shorter hand sanding blocks.
Mostly, I used long, course sanding blocks that I made with cut up sanding belts, straight lumber and contact cement to achieve the flat and square surfaces necessary to mate the fiberglass cabin top with the door and sill area of the fuselage.
Please forgive the wind noise and my mumbling!
Please comment and tell us what you used and how you went about the rough trimming and fitting of your project.
I would love to see more detailed information and/or links to what the final profile should look like to allow for the McMaster Carr door seal modification and how others went about achieving this.
Cheers!
