    TE to the trips side causes a little bit if a problem because of the distance between the #2 receiver and the tight end. Usually go to some form of 3 deep or use the backside safety to trap the tight end vertical and play 2 read on #1 and #2 . If the TE is away as a single we play cover 2 concepts with half player playing it more like quarters or robber

  • @CoachMac
    @CoachMac  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    We generally change coverages if that is an issue. It is usually the down safety and corner that get picked. We play man on 3 sometimes and 2 read on 1 and 2. We also play a strong rotated 3 deep.

    we run run every trips coverage you discussed and a few combos. My favorite..because its so easy to teach young players is zone to the trips side and lock away( half mack) if the away side runs a vertical route the CB runs over the top and the w/s is now in robber coverage. Presnap...the w/s puts himself in position to take away any slant/post by the backside #1...CB only has to worry about a vertical route. To the trips side we press the #2 . The defender pressing #2 is responsible for any short flat plays a vertical route by #1. The C/B and F/S play a combo..the C/B is responsible for the deepest WR closest to the sideline #1. The F/S is responsible for the deepest WR from the hash to the middle #2... our short player does not cover grass..3 verts he runs..backside vert and w/s is looking to also run if no bend route. not sure what you think about this change up. There is more to it, but this is the basic

    Great stuff I love Cover 4 because you can get so many variations of it. You are great! Our team won states playing that defense but I love the wrinkle of Mix by maning #1 to trips. I will incorporate that this week in training camp.

    Palms and 2 Read are the same coverage. Hip is an alignment for a LB

  • @CoachMac
    @CoachMac  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you are defending the slant bubble from trap or stress where you are actually playing regular 2 Read with the LS then yes he must try and get hands on the slant by 2 until 3 is in a position to out leverage him on the bubble. The mike will not get to the slant window as quick because he is in the box. The coverages are all meant to defend certain things and you choose them based on how the offense attacks.

  • @CoachMac
    @CoachMac  9 ปีที่แล้ว

    2 Read is a coverage where the corner and safety play coverage rules off the release of #2 receiver. Stress is the same coverage with backside safety pulling up 3 vertical in trips.

    Love man #1 and pattern read #2 & #3 strong, We'll also pattern read a RB and weakside #1 if the back is lined up weak. I also like rolling that corner down vs rolling a safety down. We called it "cloud". Gives us a better shot at covering 4 verts. Tell that corner that he jams then goes vertical with #1 with eyes on #3. He can continue vertical until something threatens the flat. So bubble he can jump but if he's outside leverage #1 and they all go vertical he can stay outside leveraged and continue vertical.

      Always liked bracketing the single, why i choose to play with 3 safeties

  • @garnerrodney
    @garnerrodney 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Loved that last piece where you talked about roll coverage......I run a 3-4 and have had success with the roll to 3.....what I am doing now is in that roll using Sam on the trips side and rolling the SS over top for the deep 3rd with the FS playing the middle deep 3rd.

      Rodney Garner Coach never answered my question.
      How would you defend the Go Slide Choice routes in the run& shoot offense?

  • @CoachMac
    @CoachMac  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    No Problem Mary Ann, thanks for watching.

  • @CoachMac
    @CoachMac  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It is a 2 Read concept where the Corner and Safety will determine the coverage based on the release of the #2 receiver. I guess palms is a fancy way to describe read, "like read my palm". Coaches can get crazy to keep their terminology secret!!!

  • @CoachMac
    @CoachMac  9 ปีที่แล้ว

    The SS or Sam that reads #3 needs to be in the window of the out route with leverage on the flat route. We would like to Cover deepest first. The FS will be driving the out by 3 but will be late

  • @CoachMac
    @CoachMac  10 ปีที่แล้ว

    That coverage is set up for the bubble screen. The LS is outside of #2 and he has immediate leverage on the bubble screen. This turns the bubble back to the FS and the Mike where we want it. The RS aligns at 10 so we give the same 2 high look every time. We use the RS and the RC as force players at any time so it changes the look. Having a drop down player weak helps defend weak side runs and by not using that safety to the trips side we can bracket the single. Always remember the guy with the marker last always wins. If you know the coverage you should be able to beat it. The key to any good defense is disguising the coverages and making it all look similar.

      Could I play this technique against a tunnel screen

  • @CoachMac
    @CoachMac  10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Stunt your line to cancel gaps vs running qbs, be careful blitzing vs running qbs. Use mostly zone pressure

  • @CoachMac
    @CoachMac  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    If we play roll we try and make it look like Mix coverage as long as possible, before we spin down to Roll coverage.

  • @CoachMac
    @CoachMac  9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would stay split field but possibly zone up the responsibilities because of the picks and rubs. Our base coverage doesn't use the backside safety so we are fine.

  • @CoachMac
    @CoachMac  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I do not talk about Special Coverage in the video. I would play man on #3 to the trips with my FS and palms or 2 read on 1 and 2 to the trips with my Down Safety and Corner. That allows me to drop a player down weak and play Cover 2 theories to the single receiver.

  • @CoachMac
    @CoachMac  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    My main 2 trips checks always leave a drop down defender weak for speed option and single receiver throws. I think the single side is easier for high school coaches to attack. In the video the Mix and Special coverages are the ones you want to use because they use Cov 2 theories to the single side.

  • @brianklee995

    Thanks for your explanation of how you defend trips. How does this adjust to either TE on the trips side? How does this adjust if the TE is on the single receiver side?

    We face a lot of teams who run 11 personnel with 3 wides. Usually a twins flex look. What is your favorite type of coverage out of that specific formation in a 4-2 with a dynamic TE? Your chalk talk is extremely helpful to me since I am rebuilding a program with limited coaches. Thank you so much for your videos!

      You have to find a way to match numbers, I’ll assume you have to push both stacks and the mike that way but at least front side Stack and Mike to get 5 on 4

    Hey coach on that first concept of defending the trips wasn't clear on what coverage you play behind it. Which coverage would you call??????????????

  • @dustinmartin22
    @dustinmartin22 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I love your videos... I wish there was a youth/middleschool version of them though. Play 3 true safeties in our league would be NOT a good idea (middle school football = 80% run). I switched to the 4-2-5 this past week against a double wing team and it worked beautifully.... against the pistol, pistol wide... I'm trying to decide where to pressure the RUN from though.

  • @CoachMac

    Coach Mac when'd defending Trips and they have a back to week side. A lot of teams like to go speed option to the weak side! What's the best way to defend that under your concepts... Seems like we're are out numbered in the boundary on run fit!

    How would you cover the old Steve Walsh play: 3 x1 where the #1 receiver runs a deep post route and all the other runs go routes. On your board the #1 receiver is all the way on the left.

    • @CoachMac
      @CoachMac  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on the coverage, some of our 3x1 stuff is man to man on Field side #1. That is the player who statistically gets the ball the least in HS

  • @CoachMac
    @CoachMac  10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Would love to hear about the 3Z concept. Does it allow you to bracket the single side? That's a huge sticking point for me.

  • @smaz3352
    @smaz3352 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    If You align the FS and the LS literally 3 yards from each other, there is no way either one of them can be effective. I would bubble screen that corner every single play until you adjust. The corner is either Man or Cover two(outside shad). That makes it an easy screen, then all we have to do is bubble the #3 out and make sure #2 block that LS.... I also don't understand why the RS is so deep. We would run a Down G blocking scheme to the weak side. That safety coming from 10 yards is giving my running back a two way go, Coach - take that corner off the trip wideout. I just can't see why you would align him there especially if number is not even a threat.....my two cents

    +Thomas MacPherson Hi, I love your videos! Very informing! I was wondering if you could do a video on cover/Tampa two coverage,shells and anything in between. Just because so many "experts" claim the coverage to be "dead". Thank you.

    • @CoachMac

      I can talk a little about Tampa 2, one of the reasons it faded away in college is because of the splits by receivers and the stress on safeties

    @jgipson1978 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Coach, great videos. As a young coach who faces trips, doubles, stack, and spread, they help out a lot. Do you ever run into the problem of your FS getting picked by #1 or #2? If so do you just adjust the assignments to allow the corner to release #1 as long as #1 is running a slant or cross or do you just stem the FS to make it more difficult to pick him?

    Bunch trips! Tight and wide. Can you ask the backside safety to play the #3 going vert?
    I think not with out changing his alignment. Ideas on still maintain split field coverage.
    We can always go to a version of cover 3. But it m curious on how you would defend it. Obviously you need to know what they like to do out of it based on tendencies. Bubble/rubs/verticals/outside zone/GT WEAK

    How does tcu make there calls ? Do the call coverage and tag it with there trips check
    So slide 2-blue solo
    Would that be 2- read side
    Blue -away side
    Solo vs trips
    Slide is adding the safety ?
    How is your basic call.

    • @CoachMac
      @CoachMac  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Slide tells them how to handle 2 Back with sniffer strong, more of a 4-3 principle. That is generally how they call their coverages. I am not fully into TCU terminology but that sounds right.
