I love this recording - I found the 3 LP set at my grandmother's house when I was very young. I couldn't BELIEVE how brilliant Joan's voice was! Thanks for posting this!

@vocalissimo1 I think the engineers were trying too hard to make Dame Joan's high notes ring out --- at the expense of the rest of the recording. Decca went through a few awkward phases in its recording history, but digital remastering has helped a bit. :)
@Remalia19 It's weird that Decca hasn't release it again, even though it is (IMO) the overall worst of Sutherland's Bellini recordings, mostly for faults not her own. I have all of the recording that eMusic allows you to buy without paying for the 10CD Sutherland/Bellini, the rest of which I already own. So - most of it.
@ChrisStockslager Incorrect transposition? In what part? Bonynge, normally very reliable, really drags in this recording. I'm not fond of Pierre Duval's voice; a lighter tenor with fewer high notes would have been better IMO. Dame Joan also seems to try a bit too hard to darken her voice - and her husband's tempi don't help either. The magic this opera can create only flickers in the earlier recording. The second one is far more satisfying!
You see, this is the difference between dramatic coloratura and bird callers like Gruberova et alles . . . the crescendos and ascending chromatics use the WHOLE VOICE. But Bonynge isn't 1/10 the conductor Serafin was, and Joan ornaments to distraction here, there are better recordings of this aria by her than this.
See, that's the problem of CD and cell phone listeners who never move to the real LIVE opera house to experience the true volumn and power of an opera singer. With that, I have to respectfully correct you that Gruberova has a focus and laser cannon like voice much like that of Birgit Nilsson whose volunm cannot be fully captured by recording and CD playing. I watched over 200 LIVE operas at Met and I can objectively compare the true volumn of the voice of Gruberova with the Met singers of today and I can responsibly tell you that Gruberova has a powerful and agile coloratura dramatic voice. I'd say that Gruberova is overall technically better than Sutherland.

FANTASTISCA! DIVINA JOAN SUTHERLAND
I don't know why people are so jealous saying bad joans she's the voice of century and this record is fab😘😘😘
Jealousy is a horrible trait in humans. God bless La Sutherland
Love her but the voice of century has been La Callas and still her till now 😘

내 영원한 프리마돈나...Brava!!
My favourite Elvira alongside Callas.
Joan was great in this role, she really was. I also like Cristina Deutekom very much in this role.
parece un juego de niña boba jamas comparar con callas
@@beachfanatic2010 you like sutherland? don't you find her voice small lyric soprano voice? and her diction and middle voice bad and muffled?
@@judygarland7186 I do. But in this role she is OK.
@@beachfanatic2010 zeani? she is another assoluta soprano like callas. Do you love her? better than sutherland? lyric soprano

@CaptFitzbattleaxe Why is it one of the worst -- besides the whole incorrect transposition up with the remastering?
Unreal singing as always.
