    Hi Tom, my wife and I met you during your shoot in Sennon and we had a chat. It has been a pleasure talking to you about Cornwall and photography. I am glad that we met so I got to know about your YT channel. Instantly subscribed. Great video, very enjoyable to watch. Actually found us in twice in the video ;-)
    Looking forward to watching more of your videos.

    Brilliant Tom. I love people watching at Lands End or Cape Cornwall etc. Street photography on the coast path. Always admire photographers who carry huge medium format film cameras around. Smaller camera will give you a lot of freedom to hike around a bit more.

      Thanks Peter I love it too, I’m so grateful it’s only a mile and a half from home. The Mamiya is certainly a workout so I’m looking forward to using the Nikon for those longer walks out on the coast.

    Nice photos. Sharp & clear. Have a Nikon FM2 with the Nikkor 50mm f 1.4 lens and love how it handles Ilford FP4. A good film with excellent grain structure.

    Hi Tom and congrats on the new camera. The pictures look great. The weather here in Iceland has also been very good for the past few days, sunny and calm day after day, which is very unusual for this time of year. Sunrise here in Reykjavík was at 11:11 today and sunset will be around 15:31. These times are so strange because Iceland is always on Greenwich Time thus the actual noon for us is at 1:30 p.m. Daylight lasts only 4 hours and 20 minutes. The weather for this week will be similar except that now it will be colder with frost up to -10° and wind up to 10 m/s. The worse the weather, the better the photos. My newly repaired Nikon FE2 is loaded with Delta 3200 and waiting to be aired.

    • @tomwhelan
      @tomwhelan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks very much Helgi, wow that’s a late sunrise and not much daylight to work with. I think you’re choosing the right film with Delta 3200. I have got to make it to Iceland it’s been a dream to visit for a while. It’s such a beautiful country. Good luck with the Delta and enjoy the sun whilst it lasts. I look forward to seeing your images.
      All the best Tom 🙏

    Small world Tom ! I have the same set up for a bit of lightweight fun , the 28 - 300 VR is good but the barrel distortion at some focal lengths can be amusing .

    • @tomwhelan
      @tomwhelan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Austen it’s seems like a great combination, I can’t wait to get back out and try some different film in it. There’s definitely distortion but I will take that over having to change lenses. Especially in the middle of a storm, If we ever get any. I keep getting clear blue skies every time I go out. I can’t believe we haven’t bumped into each other yet. Keep up the great work 🙏

    Interesting to see you more freewheeling on your compositions, not as deliberate as with your RZ67, but still some nice shots. Pictures look grainier than I would expect from FP4, though. Congrats on your new gear. I have to admit that I'm struggling with 35mm ever since I started wearing glasses, and getting decent prints in the darkroom is a lot more difficult than with 6x7 negatives.

    • @tomwhelan
      @tomwhelan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Alfred it is quite grainy for a 125 speed film. I did develop in Rodinal though which has probably got something to with it. I’m with you on the 6x7 it’s really nice to work with all round.
      Many thanks Tom 🙏

    Tom, a very relaxing video and beautiful images as always from you.
    I've got a film recommendation for you. I've just started using Adox CMS 20 II for landscapes. The sharpness, detail and lack of grain from 35mm is astonishing and I'm really enjoying the images I have got with it so far. It is very slow - ISO 12 in high contrast scenes, so you're on a tripod. Processing is very straight forward, with good instructions on the website. It's not terribly expensive, you can get five rolls with a bottle of it's special developer for £35, so maybe worth a go.
    James

      @tomwhelan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks James that sounds like a really interesting film. I will definitely do a bit of research on it and maybe give it a go soon. Thanks for the recommendation it’s really appreciated.

    Good result Tom, cracking camera and lens. I've been using FP4 at iso 400 then developing in D76 1/1 I'm enjoying the results. So many different developers out there with differing results I tend to go with whatever is on special offer at the time of need, it's generally D76 haha. Have a grand festive one mate.

    • @tomwhelan
      @tomwhelan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks mate I’m definitely going to try that combo soon. I’ve got a bit stuck using the same developer. I’m going to experiment more in the new year, mix it up a bit. I have used D76 before and really liked it. I think when I was at college it was Tri x and D76 it gave beautiful results. Have a great Xmas and I look forward to seeing your videos in the new year 🙏

      @@tomwhelan Look forward to seeing your results mate good to see what different chemicals can achieve, my go to was always ID11 for absolutely no reason than I love the name ID11, sounds pretty cool to me, but in NZ last time I looked it was a lot dearer than D76 which seems to be the standard here.

    May be worth trying Delta 100 or Acros in 35mm for greater “resolution”. I had problems scanning. Darkroom printing was the solution 😊. On a serious note there are definitely films that are better suited for scanning and digital applications, such as those fore mentioned. I disliked tri-x in 35mm immensely because of the scanned results. However the film when printed on silver gelatin is lovely. Experimentation is half the enjoyment of film shooting. Thank you sharing your journey.

      Thanks very much Tim, I will definitely be shooting Delta 100 very soon, it’s one of my favourite films. I love Acros too but it’s a shame it so pricey. Thanks for the great advice and appreciate your time to watch the video.

    Another great set of images, Tom. I have a 28-200mm which I use on a Minolta. It is an old Sigma lens though, so it hasn't the resolution of the Nikon. But, as you said, it is a very handy walk around lens.

    The F100 is iconic. The lens you have chosen is a good one, with its wide end being its best. How did you find the 300mm end? Was the VR on? Perhaps a comparison of VR V tripod using a high resolution film like Rollie 80s might be of interest. Lovely photography,Tom.

    • @tomwhelan
      @tomwhelan  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks very much I really enjoyed shooting with the F100 and 28-300 lens. It seems like a great combination, the 300mm end is a little softer but definitely sharp enough for me. I was using VR, some of the shots were taken with a shutter speed as low as 1/30 th of a second. I’m really impressed with that.
      All the best Tom 🙏

    Snap Tom…bought my F100 two weeks ago.
    Warning..it eats batteries…so put decent ones in, I only had some cheap Kodak batteries they died on me after one roll..also shot a test roll of FP4 ..loving my F100 much lighter than the F5.
    I would still use primes on it though, you get better results than using a super Zoom imho!

      Thanks very much that’s really good to know, I will have to get some spare batteries to be on the safe side. As long as it’s more weather proof than the Mamiya I’m happy. I will be able to keep it under my jacket if it gets really nasty. Thanks for all the advice it’s really appreciated 👍
