    As an non believer i must say this presentation is utterly amazing. Dr Bikman is very very clear about the truth of methabolic sindrome and modern life style excesses. This presentation is one of the most lucid speech about this epidemic.

      Agreed! 🙂 In my experience, the same application of study in the spiritual has afforded me the same clarity as this talk on the physical. I believe that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the continuation of Christs church in our day. As grateful as I am for the brilliant information in this talk, I am eternally grateful for my testimony through study and prayer. If you still aren’t a member, I encourage you to visit the church website and invite some missionaries to come study with you. I promise that you will find that information as compelling as the info presented in this talk. 3 years since your comment, hopefully you see this. Best to you and yours. 🙂🙏🏼

    I had growing ldl cholesterol levels as I went through menopause and my doctor wanted me to go on a statin. I had followed several medical professionals about our rush to do so. Dispite my efforts to drop weight and my cholesterol... I was not able to do so. I asked my doctor what we could do to prove I was at risk of heart disease ... she had me get a coronary calcium score (ct scan) to see buildup in my arteries. My score was 0. I continue to eat a Mediterranean type diet, exercise daily and manage stress. This talk is awesome....needs to get out into our society.

    This man is amazing. I am a phisician and i totaly submit to is view of insulin as the root of most "chronic" disease.
    Just wish i had a professor like him when i was in college, istead of the AHA guidelines and so forth.
    I really hope his and other great researchers in this field gets known and we can see a change in the dogmatic ideas the general public and the medical community have about nutrition and disease.
    As always, fantastic talk, straight to the point, simple way of conveying complex ideas, a master at his craft.

    So much of this speech is fascinating and pertinent and rings true to me. I'm glad D. Bikman opens this important discussion of how to treat our bodies. However, I'm wary of those who say we shouldn't take the word of wisdom (scripture) literally or delve further than the short list. Why did God reveal those verses if not for us to apply them? Just because some view them as vague doesn't mean they're void of importance.
    Dr. Bikman wisely encourages us to find out for ourselves and not just believe him, but he only says to search in scientific articles and use our own judgement and experimentation. While those aspects are very important and part of my searches for truth, I expect a BYU professor and fellow member of the church to also encourage learning by study AND faith. Especially in terms of health, it would be foolish to not turn to the Creator of the human body and to only rely on the arm of flesh to tell us how to eat. Right now there are very conflicting scientific findings on this subject of macronutrients, and its rather impossible to know which of all the theories is correct without turning to God. I feel that the doctrine of the gospel is to let answers from God dictate our decisions, not only data, which is often flawed as we later find out. The dietary advice in this speech is not the main concern for me, but the admonition that we should ignore the details of scripture and that we should find answers in science alone. We should use science and must be learned. However, my heart tells me to cling to the wisdom of God more than the wisdom of men, and find answers to this great debate not on Google Scholar or PubMed but mainly in gospel study and personal revelation.

    • @strbdr594
      @strbdr594 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would humbly suggest the science is clear. It is humans that are conflicted driven by pre-conceived notions and dogma... and why he made a point of learning to read scientific papers with no pre conceived ideas. The (scientific) truth has always been there.

    • @darrenfeelgreat
      @darrenfeelgreat 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Your faith is admirable. In this case, I would liken turning to the Lord for dietary advice (when there is a wealth of scientific literature on the topic) to being unwell and relying solely on prayer and not availing ourselves of modern medicine practices such as antibiotics, blood transfusions, and other treatments. He has given us the ability to reason and discover. For philosophical questions such as the nature of suffering and the basis of morality, divine inquiry is a perfectly legitimate method. However, for matters of physical practicality such as building a rocket, formulating a chemical compound, or fueling the human body, it only stands to reason that the beauty of the scientific model can help us to find the answers for ourselves. After all, every good parent and/or teacher strives to build a child/student who diligently finds the answer on his/her own, rather than simply being told what to do.

      Just had my 90 year old rural neighbor over last night. She said they only ate what they grew or raised growing up and nothing else. Think about how prosperous even the poorest person with access to commercial industrial farming is. Our global productivity has us drowning in carbs, with little cost or effort. Consider how long you'd have to work to grow wheat to net a barrel of flour. Now it costs a couple bucks, the equivalent of just a days labour even at the poorest level globally. Let that sink in. What used to take months of labor can now buy the same amount of flour in seconds, minutes, or at the absolute "poverty" level, take a day or two. Yes, we are much more prosperous than the vast majority of every human who ever walked the Earth for tens of thousands of years.

    Although we may be relatively prosperous it is quite obvious in the UK that diseases related to insulin resistance are more common in the relatively poor . Low incomes will inevitably be spent on foods that will cause insulin resistance. Often the poor are criticised for not ' cooking from scratch ' but fuel poverty is also an issue . It has been for a generation and that is before the present fuel cost crisis !

    In our family we understand the Word of Wisdom to describe a low-glycemic diet, with seasons when we eat fewer vegetables and more meats. We don't do our "cold/famine" high-meat seasons only in the actual winter or dry season, but we've developed a looser cycle that's still influenced by the actual seasons and seems to work.

    I have been trying very hard to get doctors to check mine and my daughters insulin levels and all I get back is we don’t do that I have totally lost faith in the medical field and now we struggle to find your own paths. How do we get doctors to listen to us and then a day and age for doctors interview us to see if they want us as a patient I should say client. I have thoroughly enjoyed this

      I ordered my own fasting insulin test through Ultalabs. Insulin plus fasting glucose (you need both) cost around $50. They contract with local blood withdrawal places; Quest Diagnostics’s in my area. Or, you can order your own through Quest. You can look up “ The Blood Code” online to see how to calculate your HOMA Index from fasting insulin and glucose. Most doctors don’t have a clue about insulin.

    Knowing what I know about heart disease, diabetes, and cancer based on my parents' health issues, I have decided that the Word of Wisdom is where the truth is, and it is time for me to start living it. I've eliminated all animal products, and I eat a high protein plant-based diet with no processed foods, very little refined sugar, and no oil. My own health issues have improved significantly, and I've lost weight. I'm pretty sure our heart surgeon prophet follows the WOW, too.

    • @TheKetoSurvivor
      @TheKetoSurvivor 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dr. Bikman makes it clear there is no stipulated WOW diet. Yet, we can decern from the WOW that we can survive and live on meat [in times of cold or famine]. That meats are given to us to use. Of course, a more seasonal way of eating is ideal, as omnivores some of us need to eat like it's the dead of winter for awhile in order to burn off those unnaturally accumulated fat reserves we've amassed. I really like the tail end of this talk and find it applicable. It's cued up to the right spot. th-cam.com/video/Jd8QFD5Ht18/w-d-xo.html

      I would be cautious about going so far as to say that they "got the message". Look at many of the comments in this thread. Benjamin's talk was very carefully worded and specifically targeted to his audience because his ideas can be considered radical as compared to conventional doctrinal thinking.

Fast forward 10 months later, my insulin is under 5 and I’m feeling a lot better. Doctors should read his book and apply what it teaches. Thank you dr Bikman.

    It is possible to like and agree with a scholar on one aspect of their knowledge and disagree spiritually… discernment is key.

    This is by far the best information for the Human race today. It was broken out in simplicity. Lower carbs to reduce insulin. For some with diabetic issues (quite a lot of us), we need to go fairly low. Get ad reasonable amounts of protein. fill the rest with fat. Does it get any simpler? Do you the medical field and Doctors will get this??? Have you Doctors see this video! Thanks so much for the clarity.

    Suggestion? Can someone in Behavioral Health Science follow up and give a speech on how to make the psychological and behavioral changes needed to implement this incredible new insight? Addiction to sugar & quick carbs can be so difficult to break. Add to that, emotional eating and food-as-reward, and you have a set up for repeating failure.
    For some, like me... its not knowing what to eat, but how to survive the transition, what to replace it with, and implementing it over the long haul. (Or, am I the only one?) 🤔

      I found the answer for me, I started OMAD (One Meal A Day) with cutting carbs, so no bread, sugar, and most veggies. Then I really started increasing good fat and meat. I lost 20 lbs rather quickly and I lost the cravings that were keeping me eating all waking hours! Plus, I never count calories per se. I focus on how much protein and fat. I'm now eating 1/3 of what I used to. Just a thought.
