  • Robert “Bom” Gillies is the last surviving member of the 28th (Maori) Battalion. He enlisted in 1943 at the age of 17 (after giving a false birthdate) and served in Italy, surviving the gruelling Battle of Monte Cassino. Bom recalls some of his memories from WWII.

    I just found one article that said that they retake or taking position from side where Leonidas and his Spartan took a stand against the Persian army over 2000 years ago. If that true, they are the first modern day warrior to held a position once held by another Warrior.

    My father and uncles from Motiti Island were in the Battalion. Two of my uncles went to Korea after they went to Europe. My brother was in Victor 6 in Vietnam. What saddens me today, is that the tyranny that they fought against runs present day NZ. The Fascists' Marxists' are all in government.

    • @nlangfordopera
      @nlangfordopera 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Right on brother, couldn't agree more. It is sad when you see where we've come from to where we are now, as a country - our souls are on the brink of being stolen.

    • @Fete_Fatale
      @Fete_Fatale 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no such thing as a "Fascist Marxist", least of all in New Zealand. You don't have to like any particular party or politician, but you don't get to misrepresent them as they're something they are not, and to claim that our present day somehow represents what our ancestors fought against is to totally disrespect their memories. Trying to equate present day politicians as the evil they fought against? ... yea, those ancestors would be deeply ashamed of you and your whiny opinions, and likely be kicking your arse to xmas.

    • @sadmimashahrin6769
      @sadmimashahrin6769 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Respectfully speaking, i don't think new zealand fills the criteria for marxist govt. Capitalism isn't any better either though. Welfare govt is the best form.

    I wish I could have walked through the camp where these amazing men were and given them all hugs. This man is absolutely beautiful, what a resilient spirit and humbling individual. May God bless him, and all Maori men who fought for the crown despite the crown's consistent racist treatment of Maori.

    Military historian, Professor Glyn Harper, in a Newshub article said German Commander, Erwin Rommell held Maori soldiers in the highest regard.
    Rommell was quoted as saying "If i was to take hell. I would use the Australians to take it and New Zealand to hold it"
    Then went on to say "If i had one division of Maori i would have taken the canal in a week. If i had three, i'd have taken Baghdad"
    Newshub article 2017 www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2017/11/75-years-since-new-zealand-handed-nazi-germany-its-first-land-defeat-of-wwii.html
    From someone with both Norwegian and German heritage and not originally from New Zealand, the mere fact that the enemy respected these men. These people, speaks volumes.
