My Dad, an ex marine, loved Merle for ever! We sang his songs on back porch while Mom cooked dinner! I loved growing up with this music!
Semper Fi for our dad. (my dad was USMC in WWII) I discovered Merle in the 80's. The BEST.
Sorry to correct you but there is no such thing as an ex Marine, you can call them a former Marine or Marine. Once a Marine Always a Marine!!! My father is Korean War era Marine, his brother was a Marine Raider in WWII and his other brother was A Marine DI!!!
Amen sister !!
What a great memory. I'll hope my daughter will have such memory's one day :-)
❤️
I just can't get enough of the intro...what a genius.
Bakersfield raised, my kids born in Tulare County.....Merle lives on!
@@missamerica5369 Just an LA kid but got family up and down the state. An old friend of mine lives in Visalia....says he'd pick walnut for a summer job. I love California.
What are the lyrics? please
Tulare Dust...

Tulare dust in a farmboy's nose
Wondering where the freight train goes
Standing in a field by the railroad track
Cursing this strap on my cotton sack
[Verse]
I can see Mom and Dad with shoulders low
Both of 'em picking on a double row
They do it for a living because they must
That's life like it is in the Tulare dust
The first thing I remember knowin'
Was a lonesome whistle blowin'
And a young'un's dream of growing up to ride
On a freight train leavin' town
Not knowing where I'm bound
And no one could change my mind, but Mama tried
One and only rebel child
From a family meek and mild
My mama seemed to know what lay in store
'Spite o' all my Sunday learnin'
Towards the bad I kept on turnin'
'Til Mama couldn't hold me anymore
I turned twenty-one in prison doin' life without parole
No-one could steer me right, but Mama tried, Mama tried
Mama tried to raise me better, but her pleading I denied
That leaves only me to blame, 'cause Mama tried
Dear old Daddy, rest his soul
Left my mom a heavy load
She tried so very hard to fill his shoes
Working hours without rest
Wanted me to have the best
She tried to raise me right, but I refused
And I turned twenty-one in prison doing life without parole
No one could steer me right but Mama tried, Mama tried
Mama tried to raise me better, but her pleading I denied
That leaves only me to blame 'cause Mama tried
This is pure raw country at its finest. Some of today's so call country artist can take lessons from these legends.
I turned 21 in prison doing life without parole. .so powerful
Thats how he lived tho too
I turned 54 on the day I enter prison
Mama tried
If you were searching for authentic, from the heart country music, you found it.
Despite of all my Sunday learning, for the bad I kept on turning. As a lapsed Catholic youngster I lived those words. God Blessed you Merle and you in turn blessed up with your presence.
I wish we could find a way for more young people to see this and to love it
I’m 18 and this type of old county is all I listen to and I show it to my friends and my girlfriend and most of them love it trust me our young generation loves it just nobody talks about it sadly
I agree, this country now days, half rap verses and crap is not real country music at all!!!
i am 12 and me and my best friend love older country like this
Gather 'round kids....this is real country music. Wow. This was back when ACL was one heck of a show.
Now it's something football players tear.
Some of the best music ever written. We miss Merle.
Best recording of this song. Merle is the GOAT. I'd argue that in George Jones' livin room.
Ahh the debate that will live forever. Merle was the better pure singer and George had more style. I think I remember even George saying that Merle was the better singer. Both are legends and both personified true country music. I can't help but think they are both rolling in their graves at what mainstream radio is calling "country music" these days.
George who?
@@chrislaswell5572 but what about waylon, or willie. if we're talking vocals i agree. but song writing is debatable
@@ryanst.pierre7561 I throw Merle in the GOAT category because he wrote his own songs, about his life. He very rarely sang other people's songs...like George, Willie, Waylon, and others.
Either way, it's just my opinion. Compared to today's "Bro Country" any of these guys are way better. Today's "country music" is simply pop music sung with southern accents and (maybe) cowboy hats. No steel, no fiddle = not country. Much of it is still good music, just don't call it "country".
@@chrislaswell5572 makes a lot of sense writing you're own songs is key
The absolute GOAT of country music. Argue with a wall.
man, that is a killer chorus. one of the best in popular music
Merle Haggard, a writer's writer. What a goddamn genius he was!
Real Country music, merl is the greatest there will ever be ❤
his voice still gives me chills
Me too.
Me three
Some of yall saying this is powerful music. It is. Its very moving. Very very great man but thats literally how he grew up
Real Country music!!!!
And the Grateful Dead did it so amazing in honor to Merle
They turned so many people on to so much greatness like Merle and Bobby Blue Bland. Cheers
Hi how are you doing today I hope you love this song right now so how are you doing today
I love real music it’s just timeless 💯
Merle is the GOAT OF ALL GOATS.
My late Dad liked country music, but never to my knowledge had Merle Haggard albums. I missed out on a lot.
GENIUS-pure and simple.
Great tune! The guitar solo was awesome 👏
I loved him too and especially that song. This is awesome version.
I think it's better than the original recording, which is also great!

Great song. And true story of Merle’s youth.
My Granny and Papa tried. Love you Hag. RIP
Sadly, we will never again see the talent like Merle gave us....
Shoot, check out Ben--sounds just like dear old Daddy, rest his soul.
How is his voice so smooth?!?!?!?
Belsnickel whiskey therapy :)
It took talent to be a singer back in the old days.
The Master ! 🇨🇱
"I turned 21 in prison" mighty powerful words, but "Mama" never gave up on her son.
This IS country music ❤️🙏
I first started listening to Merle when I was in Viet-Nam with a Shipmate from Bakersfield.
I remember a lot of songs from those times......funny how you never forget......
Thank you for your service sir.
Thank you for your service sir!
I’m not a huge country fan aside from the occasional hit, but I heard this song in the movie The Strangers over 10 years ago and was instantly hooked. Great song

Just brilliant.

not the commercialized garbage that started in the 1990s
What a beautiful and meaningful song.. i love county music.. the meaning of this song is almost similar to song of Mr. Aguilar of philippines "Anak"..

@@chrislaswell5572 Well done! That's how Merle phrased it.
BlackJack needs to get rid of all those "g's" at the end of the words.
Thank god you were here! Merle's singing is nearly unintelligible. 😹
Real country wish the junk country we have now days had this kind of soul
simply the best.
Tulare dust. Us southern Californians know what he's talking about.
Kern County born and raised, yep...dust and 2 seasons- hot and fog
I'm born and raised in LA....and just a city boy, I guess. But I've been up and down this whole state by now. Got cousins in Monterey, Carpenteria, and Modesto. One of my old rock band mates came from Visalia (i.e. Tulare County) So maybe I know more than most So Cal peoples about our whole beautiful state. Much appreciate your comment.
And btw, Merle was a pretty good picker himself.
@@boblozaintherealworld3577 awesome reply ! saw you on one of my other comments, lol. My oldest was born right there at KDDH in Visalia! Glad to meet ya!

Bob Wier - "...I was smitten by the song, and it felt autobiographical to me to a point- " June 2006 / San Francisco inside cover of "HAG the best of Merle Haggard" 2006. Kinda how I thought of Marty Robbins' "El Paso" from The Grateful Dead's "Steal Your Face" -
The best version of this song. The intro is a story unto itself. My father and others told me about picking cotton. 0:43
The Intro is from his song "Tulare Dust"', another brilliant Merle song. Cheers, your country has produced some of thr best music I've ever heard.
Definetly the best version with the best sound on TH-cam! His mimic in the 2nd 'Mama tried' really feels it, he seems really thinking back to his mother
Thank you for explaing the lairy dust because those who taught they where above us and put us just below taught that they knew .I will never for you thanks .
"I turned 21 in prison doing life without parole" is one of the two best lines in country music. Including Johnny Cash's "I shot a man in Reno Just to watch him die"
tells a complete story in one line
Quanta armonia nella tua voce...riposa in pace amore...🥰😍😇😇😇💘💓💕💕💕💕💕💕💕

Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, George Harrison.... they just don't make em like they used to.
"THE REAL DEAL"
Hi how are you doing today I hope you love this song right so how is your day going today
My grandad farmed the Tulare dirt life was hard
It's really amazing how people choose to judge someone . Regardless of guilt and or innocence . The circumstances involved in a person or persons . Was it over passion ,hunger ,hatred ,or wrongdoing toward them or their family . I know this by my own heart and soul . Someone hurts or threatens me or mine . Well all B.S. aside ,start digging and praying . This ole boy going to start tracking . In all reality their are laws that are legal in carrying out such actions . But the society we live in judges the meek ,weak , and lesser value to the more privliged . Silver spooned is a better term !
I miss my mum
TMissed TALLENT!!!!

Story every time.
Hi how are you doing today I hope you love this song right now so how is your day going today
I remember a double pointed plow tied to my feet . With a harness around my neck by the age of ten years old . Tied to an apple tree as a child . As a young man chained to a road tractor . So I don't no about others and their lives . Or being swollowed whole at the age of ten . By a state record to this day in the State Of Florida .18 and a half feet long , in went into the death role .I'm still alive thanks the Grace of Thy Father in Heaven and Jesus Christ . The Wholly Ghost has truly been with me !
.. and don't forget Roy Nichols . . . .!!
Does anybody know what brand/model microphone he was using in this video?
Merle should have added extra chorus or two
Who's the lead guitar player here? There is (or was) a different 80s Hgagard show on youtube where he had Clint Strong playing elas. Also. avery jazzy player
Song starts 0:43
IS THAT ROY NICHOLS PLAYING LEAD GUITAR??
Yes, he's listed in the credits on the album for this performance. Cheers
Does anyone know the name of the big guy playing the the guitar with the red cap on. I never remember seeing him with Merle before this.
I believe that's Dennis Hromek (playing bass, not guitar).
