Worked with Stan in the early 90s...definitely quite the character. I only found out tonight (3/25/23) that we lost him back in December. RIP, dude.

I have known Stan for the past 5 years while in So. Or. I have the most utmost respect for this man. He is the real deal and expects the best from others and no less from his self. We all piss people off when we have high expectations... but he always holds that same expectation of himself.... He gave my son lessons for 3 yrs. while in highschool. My son started in 8th grade and his senior yr went to state for trumpet. Stan offered to teach Preston trumpet for free, that's how dedicated Stan is.

Stan your playing has really been an influence. You had a wonderful opportunity to get to play with the best. Heck I've even bought a shirt or two from you. I've learned from my life experiences and even from those of others, so thank you for sharing this.

The year was 1979 and my father took me to see Maynard at Donegal HS in Pennsylvania. The show was awsome. After the show we went outside to try and get an autograph but Maynard didn't show up. I got to talk to Stan outside of the bus. Super nice guy and awsome horn player.

Great to hear you tell this Stan! I remember the night well. I remember how strange it felt to not have you there. You were always laser accurate, never a doubt how things were to be played. I learned tons from you during my stay. Hope we get to do it again sometime!!

I had the pleasure of getting to a concert in southern minnesota, years and years ago and heard Stan Mark warming up near the stage and just approached him. Very personable and talked practice technique, etc. He was one of the oldest heads in the band and that was a shame, but it happened. Play on, Stan, and thanks for the tips.

Stan played "The Way We Were" at Maynard's 75th Birthday celebration (2002?) and there wasn't a dry eye in the place. It was the highest tribute and most emotional moment of the night.

I met Stan Mark in Medford a while ago... He could only talk about how he played for Maynard... He of course told me this story as he proceeded to drive the limo to prom.

The story Stan tells here lines up pretty close to what Alan Wise told me, with a few minor details being left out. Not necessary, as that was mid Nov. '82...Stan lasted longer than anybody...great player...yes, he had his demons but, to be out there that long as a sideman ya gotta respect that

Just like how marco22560 explained it. My directors always made us use this quote not only for band but for the future to come. "If you are early, you're on time, if you are on time, you're late, and if you are late, don't bother showing up unless you have a replacement".

I was lucky to have a few lessons with Stan as a kid while he was touring with MF. What you see here is what it was. Stan LOVED...loves MF. He was a tough SOB when it came to getting what he wanted you to get out of the horn. You gotta hand it to Stan, 9.5 years with MF. Stan is maybe not the funnest guy to be around in a band. He'll be the first to tell you that. He has high, high standards. The first person he makes live up to that is Stan Mark. I will always admire Stan Mark.

Saw Maynard at the Blue Pelican, Newport RI in the 80's. During break, all his musicians drank coke at the bar. No booze.

I have a good friend (who now plays lead trumpet for a VERY major recording artist) who played on Maynard's band in the early-mid 1980s. He said Stan used to threaten to "shove a coke bottle" up you-know-where if he played higher than him. True story -- not a nice person.

Wow 9.5 years! Nice to see you had a future in music. Have you got my house rent for sub-letting my house in Virginia while I was on the road?:) Remembering the Navy Band and the Jimmy Eller Band at the Cave in DC and the Maryland Beach gigs with the Eller band ,, Mike Adams -- I was the drummer if the tea has spoiled your memory :)

So what do I say to one of my musicians who told me he had to leave early from a gig to sleep because he had to wake up early the next day. Or one of my musicians that showed up at 7pm when soundcheck was at 5pm. Or one who shows up in jeans on the bandstand instead of dress pants...
I miss the days when musicians where responsible and acted like professionals...were they ever professional?

In all the videos I’ve ever seen of Maynard band, Stan looked pissed off all the time. Lin Biviano was the best lead player Maynard had (well in my humble opinion).

It sounds like they didn't wake him up on purpose, if you catch my drift.

    • @chasefreak

Ok, here's the story I got from Alan Wise who was in the Trumpet section at the time which included Stan and Hoby Freeman. The Berklee incident was the 3rd strike for Stan since the tour started that September. One of the "biggies" was the Mayport Festival in Jacksonville, Fl. which was videotaped, and parts are on YT. That night, Stan had a bug up his ass about something and said to Alan Wise "Ok, YOU'RE playing lead tonight!" Alan said "Um, the show is being filmed tonight and I don't think Maynard would be too happy if you didn't play lead as usual." Stan just said "Nope! YOU'RE playing lead!" Alan went along with it. Maynard didn't say anything, but Alan recalls Maynard turning around and just staring Stan Mark down...no words were said. After the gg, Alan told Stan "Don't EVER do that to me again!" That was Oct. 9th the final nail in the coffin was at the Berklee concert on Nov. 13th. As Stan states, nobody woke him and he did indeed miss the downbeat. In a mad fury, Stan slams open the stage doors and makes a racket and walks up to the bandstand. He missed Birdland and Hollywood, the opening numbers. He leaned over to Alan and said, "I bet you think this is funny!" Alan just shrugged and said, "I always have fun Stan!" The 3rd number was Don Sebesky's arrangement of Take The "A" Train. Now, you know the ending section which Maynard plays? Well, Stan starts playing it along with Maynard and huffing and puffing through it. Maynard turns around and says to Stan "Play your part kid!" After the song, Maynard looked over to Ed and signaled "He's done!" Maynard did not want Stan back on the bandstand for the second set. Alan said it was the weirdest and most uncomfortable feeling the entire last set and he had never really seen Maynard boiling angry. It was just weird. There were only 16 or 17 days left on the tour. Roget Pontbriand was brought on the band to finish the tour.

@@chasefreak Well that's quite a story. It's hard to picture MF getting angry as it didn't seem to be his style, but you can only push so hard. Purposely screwing with songs mid-performance sounds like a great way to commit Hari-Kari.
