The movie morphed the Director and Mond together. The book has them as separate people. Please WatchMojo, distinguish whether you're talking about the movie or book because it cannot obviously be both.
Mond is not John's father. The director of the hatchery and conditioning center is. Kind of a huge mistake, having repeated it throughout the video. Did anyone at watchmojo read the book?
Actually mond is his father. Mond is the leader, and such Bernard took advantage of the fact that he got someone pregnant and had a child outside his own rules which shamed him.
TheBloodymAlice Nope, Christopher Price is right, his father is not Mond. Also, Mond is not THE leader, he is one of a few high-positioned government workers.
Noah Kang I don't disagree. Using your imagination along with the text of a good book will always be more fulfilling, because it will always be exactly what you desire. That's only if you enjoy doing such a thing, of course. However history has shown that a lot movies made from books have been statistically bad, or went far from the original source material. And of course you have those movies that made the book well known, due to it's epic-ness, like Lord of the Rings.
Mustapha Mond is NOT his father, the Director of Hatcheries is John's father. Also John hangs himself, he doesn't fall off a cliff. I just finished the book and it seems like whoever made this only watched the movies and never bothered to read it.
There are rather a lot of errors with this Top 10 Notes, for example, the part with Bernard Marx. The reason he is that way is due in part to him having a physical defect; in Brave New World, there's a type of height ratio betwixt Alphas - Epsilons, with Epsilons being very short. About 4' something. He, for some reason, is the height of a Gamma even though he's an Alpha Plus. This causes him scorn, which in term causes the conditioning he had received early in life to faulter as he sees the world in a new light. Also, where's Helmholtz?

I know these aren't classics but maybe u guys can start doing more updated book notes like..... Top Ten Notes: The Hunger Games or Divergent or The Fault in Our Stars. I think that would be really cool
but....in the book John was not the son of mustapha mond and mustapha mond never resigned or anything and he is not the only world controller btw. also here you guys make it look like john died from accident, in the book he kills lenina in an act of rage and then when he realizes what he has done the next day he hangs himself in a lighthouse. the book ends with his feet dangling eastwards...southwards...westwards... also I cant understand how you could completely leave out the war the society is based on: there was a war of unkown terror. nuclear weapons, biological weapons everything you can imagine. later came stability when they agreed on having a world state after this catastrophe. but in this state there was still terrorism and assasinations and so on, so they decided to do the entire mind-control thing for stability. I think what is worst about the book is that it is realistic as heck and the most intelligent thing to do. Everyone is happy and safe and I dont see any other way that would be possible. they found a way to exist as humans without using up ressources and killing eachother. also bernard marx is different because while he as an alpha should be perfect basically he has physological problems and everyone laughs at him more or less. he is super unhappy and sick of the society and therefor does not even take soma. by the way soma makes you sleep in a happy coma for as long as you want. meaning all their freetime these people either spend with pre-programmed activities like magnetic golf or by taking soma. also bernard marx has a friend who is as well not happy with the way things are, but for a different reason. they both get banned in the end, but thats not such a bad thing like you guys make it sound like. they go on a remote island with all the other different and intelligent people in the world and their life isnt all that bad. im sorry but this top ten is so messed up that I will dislike it. please fix it
Also Lenina didn't loved John she was just fixiatted with him because she couldn't have sex with him everytime she tried, and the only time she almost had sex with him John freaked out said she was a whore and started hitting her with a belt
Horst Weinert It didn't say whether he killed her or not . It's uncertain what really happened to her. Also, I think he hanged himself because he failed to cleanse himself from the civilization and was unable to start to live independently (he was under soma when he woke up). Otherwise, I agree with your point.
Loved the book. My favorite trivia is that in the film Demolition Man, Sandra Bullock plays a character that is inspired by this novel. Her character's name was Lenina Huxley.
we got a choice to read this book or read the things they carried lol teacher said we were to immature for brave new world so we read for some reason lol but i read both
janeswurld Ahahaha Some people were immature about it in my class so your teacher probably wasn't wrong XD Every class has those few kids that make the rest of the class look bad. Really well thats good that you at least got to read it :)
Having just read this book for my English class, I can say that more of this was based on the movie than the actual book. For example, in the book, Mustapha Mond was not actually John the Savage's father. It was the Director of the Hatchery. More information should have been gotten from the book. Anybody who actually read it would know the other inaccuracies here.
My high school curriculum included 1984 which I struggled with at the time but am very grateful I was made to read looking back now. I wish this one was included in our curriculum as well and that we would have analysed both in class, comparing and discussing which one is 'scarier' and which one is more likely to occur in the future etc. It would have made for excellent discussion topics!
Only through the deconstruction of family can the state assume the position of God among men, the absolute authority of what is right and wrong. When divinity is stripped from man, and the spirit extinguished, then the very concept of rights are torn asunder and the choking vine of permission takes it's place. Oh how right he was, how terribly right he was...
I like how various aspects of the story go into controversial aspects of technology first depicted by HG Wells and other scifi authors. Many other themes go into theism, individuality, humanity and more.
In "Brave New World," Mustapha Mond is NOT John's father. John's father is Thomas, the Director of Hatcheries and Conditioning--who Linda, John's mother, calls "Tommikin." DO YOUR RESEARCH, WATCHMOJO! You didn't even watch the whole movie, which shows very clearly that it is the Director of Hatcheries and Conditioning who is the dad and NOT the World Comptroller! Geez.
ABSOLUTE SURPRISE to be an American Film. This is what American Film SHOULD be. Open, objective, honest doubting, questioning, innovative, visionary, inquiring - to mention few features. This doesn't mean the lack of Bravery, which seems to be so important quality to Americans. In all honesty I must say that the Story-line in this Film was most impressive that I've seen for about in 10 - 15 years among AMERICAN films. It was also executed rather with a style. This Film shows that not all hope is lost concerning American Cinema to ADDRESS things.
The Shadow first appeared in radio on July 31, 1930. He has since appeared in books, comics (strips and books), graphic novels, television, video games, serials and five movies (1931, 32, 37, 38, 46, 94).
Thank you for these very informative videos. I really appreciate this youtube channel because of its diversity. This channel mostly appeals to movie-watchers but it also touches upon a great variety of subjects such as video games, history and literature. From personal experience I'd like to point out that your videos have often been a gateway for me. Thanks to you guys I've enjoyed a lot of different movies I'd never even thought about watching. Because of your broad audience who are open for something different then just movies and videogames I think it would be interesting to have a top 10 Notes about a classic Russian writer such as Tolstoj, Dostojevsky, Gogol, Chekov, Pushkin ... It would be interesting to not only hear about the popular classics in the Western worlds but to also touch upon the 19th century Russian novels which were of as much value to the Western as the Russian world from their time of writing until now.
It's probably too late now, but the information in this video wasn't that great. Mustapha Mond wasn't John's father, John didn't die on accident, and they left out an entire character. They probably went by the movie version.
must be going by the movie interpretation but even still why mention the author at all if you're going to relay to wrong info. I bet some poor kid is going to try and use this to do hw
John wasn't Mustapha Mond's son he was "The Director's" son. The Director is the head of the Central London Hatchery. Idk if it was different in the movie adaptations, but in the original book John had no relation to Mustapha Mond.
Where do I start with all these errors? First and most importantly, Mustapha Mond *ISN'T* John's father. His father is the DHC. Next, Mond doesn't step down, the DHC steps down. Plus, Mond IS educated, as he is one of two people able to communicate with John easily (The other being Helmholtz Watson, Bernard's best friend, who isn't mentioned in this video despite being a major character in the climax.) The DHC is the one who *appears* educated. Also, Bernard doesn't try to be like the others until he gains success after finding John and Linda. Finally, the video doesn't touch the fact that the book is symbolic. This video will do you no good if you're trying to read and/or understand the book. Just read it, and steer clear of these "notes"
Beside the inaccuracies, it should have also be mentioned that the book (as well as Orwell's "1984") was influenced by "We" from Yevgeni Zamyatin, which could be considered the first modern dystopian novel.
I teach this novel to juniors in high school. Hopefully they don't watch this and get Mustapha Mond and Thomas mixed up. Thomas is the DHC (director of hatcheries and conditioning). He is John's father and lost Linda in a storm while on a trip to the Savage reservation. Mustapha Mond is one of ten world controllers. Technically, exile is a good thing because it is a place for free thinkers like Helmholtz. Bernard hates the idea because he WANTS to conform but can't due to his physical difference. How can Mojo miss the psychology angle? Just look at their names!
@ 03:13 you said that Mustapha Mond is the father of John, which isn't true. The director is the father of John not Mustapha Mond. Mustapha Mond is one of the world controller. just wanted to correct that :))
Watchmojo... you should do a video on the top 10 videogames that keep track of real-life time even when the video game is not plugged in... for example, pokemon gameboy games have an internal clock, Animal Crossing, etc... that would be awesome!
mustapha mond is NOT john's father. the DHC is.
writer#2: ah, but how about a plot twist.. lol
Dakshitaa Babu they missed that :)
You beat me to it!
The movie morphed the Director and Mond together. The book has them as separate people. Please WatchMojo, distinguish whether you're talking about the movie or book because it cannot obviously be both.
The Movie clearly separates them. Miguel Ferrer's character is clear and defined as is Leonard Nimoy's. Watchmojo screwed up big time on this.
Considering they show scenes from the 1980 and 1998 versions(the 1980 version slightly more closer to the book), mojo crapped the bed on this one.
TheBloodymAlice
Nope, Christopher Price is right, his father is not Mond. Also, Mond is not THE leader, he is one of a few high-positioned government workers.
TheBloodymAlice That may be the case in the film versions but in the book it was the DHC (as stated above) that impregnated Linda.
I suppose the company isn't named "ReadMojo" after all.
TheBloodymAlice I read the book and watched the movie, they missed that one.
these movies don't look like the one that was in my head when I was reading the book
I like the one on my head better
Books are always better then film
Yeah for sure, those tv/movies look like crap compared to the book.
sin8800 This is not true. That is something only someone with a bias that books are always better than movies would say.
1980 movie is quite good, others are really crappy
I read this book in highschool and it was one of the best books that I have ever read.
Mustapha Mond is NOT his father, the Director of Hatcheries is John's father. Also John hangs himself, he doesn't fall off a cliff. I just finished the book and it seems like whoever made this only watched the movies and never bothered to read it.
Read the book guys, the portrayal of the characters are not well done in any of the adaptations.
I guess the people at Watch Mojo just watched the television movies and skipped the book? lol
You should read the book, it's really good.
I have, it's one of my favorites. :) I was just commenting on how poor this video's information is.
There are rather a lot of errors with this Top 10 Notes, for example, the part with Bernard Marx.
The reason he is that way is due in part to him having a physical defect; in Brave New World, there's a type of height ratio betwixt Alphas - Epsilons, with Epsilons being very short. This causes him scorn, which in term causes the conditioning he had received early in life to faulter as he sees the world in a new light.
Also, where's Helmholtz?
The movie most likely omitted that detail
They said that John is Mond's son. Actually, John is the DHC's son.
I know the feeling.
From memory I think it's because there was a little too much alcohol in his test tube.
That's the rumor.
Mustafa Mond isn't Johns Father. The Director Thomas alias "Thomakin" is his Father
Lol
the dhc
Tomakin is spelt without a h. but good point
John's father was not Mustafa Mond. His father was the Director of Hatcheries of Central London, who was about to send Bernard Marx to Iceland.

This book was way ahead of its time. Thanks mojo
a masterpiece! I didn't think so in high school. Upon subsequent re-readings it's prophetic and comments, boldly, on the human condition.
Love u watchmojo check ur channel every dang day
Just finished reading it for the first time last night. It was definitely a trip.
WatchMojo. You guys should do a Top 10 list of movies based on novels that the author of the novel doesn't like.
Wow I'm surprised to see my favorite book on WatchMojo! Thanks!!
This is one of the best books I've ever read because I think BNW is parallel to our own in some ways.
Brave New World is a much better thought out idea than 1984 and much more correct.
I'm reading this book right now for school, the video helped a lot. Thank you!
The book is so much more brutal than the movie.
Oh, missed a big one there--Thomas "Tomakin," the Director of Hatcheries and Conditioning, is the father of John, not Mustafa Mond.

We had the theme of 'dystopia' in one semester of English in high school, so we read Brave New World and 1984 to compare and contrast the two.
The Shadow first appeared in radio on July 31, 1930. He has since appeared in books, comics (strips and books), graphic novels, television, video games, serials and five movies (1931, 32, 37, 38, 46, 94).

3:13 ....Thomas/Tomakin. Mustapha was the Controller, not the boss of Bernanrd
How close do the movies follow the book
This is going to be sooooo helpful when we have to do a project on this book.
It's probably too late now, but the information in this video wasn't that great. Mustapha Mond wasn't John's father, John didn't die on accident, and they left out an entire character. They probably went by the movie version.
This reminds me of the book "The Giver." Great video by the way.
Similar...ish, but predates The Giver by 60+ years. Fahrenheit 451 also comes to mind
Why did you release this after my research paper on this was due!!!! Ah this coulda helped
3:12 - The mother, Linda, does not bring shame upon the world controller, Mustapha Mond. Bernard shames The Director of the hatchery.
Why do you always come up with these videos 3 weeks after I had to write an essay about these books? :D
Brave New World is the most disturbing book I've ever read.
Wait I thought the Director was the father, not Mond, WE NEED MAURY!
I think your right it was the director smh watch mojo...
must be going by the movie interpretation but even still why mention the author at all if you're going to relay to wrong info. I bet some poor kid is going to try and use this to do hw
Maurgy-Porgy!
2:58 I guess they have 1990s Chevrolet minivans with wood paneling in 2540AD
John wasn't Mustapha Mond's son he was "The Director's" son. The Director is the head of the Central London Hatchery. Idk if it was different in the movie adaptations, but in the original book John had no relation to Mustapha Mond.
where can i find the soundtrack from the 1998 movie???? pls
John's father is actually the director of the hatchery, not Mustafa Mond. Otherwise, nice video :)
Still one of my fave sci-fi books.
1:42 it's not A.D., it's A.F. as in "After Ford"
Bernard here does not look like the Bernard in my head, he's way too cute to be the odd person Lenina thinks he is.
This very much reminds me of my english lessons...we read the book and watch the film from 1998
Anyone knows the background music?
Wish y'all could have done this 5 weeks ago when we started reading this in school
Book is far too different
Wait I thought the director, Bernard's employer, was John's father, not Mustapha Mond. That is why Bernard brought him to the Brave New World.
It's coming true!
What year is the version of Peter Gallagher, Miguel Ferrer, Leonard Nimoy and if it is on Dvd?
John wasn't Monds child, it was the controller of the hatchery
WatchMojo.com you guys should do top ten Easter eggs since Easter is right around the corner
Why am I watching this? I already read the book
Finished this book one month ago
The hatchery director is John's father, not Mustapha Mond. And Lenina'a surname is 'Crane.'
I tried reading this book years ago and couldn't get into it. I think I'll give it another try. Thanks for posting this MoJo.
Well this is late reply but it’s sort of nothing like the book
Number 1 favorite book ever made!
I prefer fahrenheit 451, still a great book though
fabienzaca yeah that ones great too. Also 1984. I hope they do that one next.
Yeah they probably will :)
3:11 John was the Director of Hatcheries' son, not Mond's.
Although a lot of people hated this book and it isn't the most pleasant to read, I really liked this novel.
Where do I start with all these errors? First and most importantly, Mustapha Mond *ISN'T* John's father. His father is the DHC. Next, Mond doesn't step down, the DHC steps down. Plus, Mond IS educated, as he is one of two people able to communicate with John easily (The other being Helmholtz Watson, Bernard's best friend, who isn't mentioned in this video despite being a major character

The father of John is Thomas the Director of Hatcheries and Conditioning. Not Mustafa Mond.
This is my favorite book of all time
3:15 - 3:18 The Director is John's father not Mond
are the brave new world movies good?
1984
John hangs himself, he doesn't clumsily fall off a cliff.
@ 03:13 you said that Mustapha Mond is the father of John, which isn't true. The director is the father of John not Mustapha Mond. Mustapha Mond is one of the world controller.
just wanted to correct that :))
Mustapha Mond wasn't Johns father though, it was a lower level leader
Watchmojo... you should do a video on the top 10 videogames that keep track of real-life time even when the video game is not plugged in... for example, pokemon gameboy games have an internal clock, Animal Crossing, etc... that would be awesome!
John is NOT the son of Mustafa Mond in the original novel, but that of the director of the Hatchery.
a great book indeed
mustafa mond isnt john's father, the Director od Hacheries and Conditioning is his father
YES! You remembered.
Mustafa Mond was not John's father. That was the DHC tomakin.
Mustapha Mond isn't John's father, The Director of conditioning is
Can it be that Bernhard is more like Helmholtz in the movie?
I'm actually reading this book :P
Mustapha Mond was not the father of John, at least not in the novel. He was one of the world controllers. John's father was a director
we live in a brave new world
Watchmojo.com, did you actually read the book? The movies are poor adaptations. Wikipedia is not always accurate. Read it!
Do a top ten foo fighters songs!!!
Why does every yootoob precis have different plot elements.
Do 1984 next. Plz!
I had to read this book in high school.
What about Demolition Man? That was an adaptation.
What the...in the book, it was the Director of Hatcheries and Conditioning - not Mustapha Mond - who was John's father.
Crazy man writing.
Mustapha Mond isn't John's father in the book and movie.
You forgot the 2005 film The Island which was based on Brave New World
