probably the only guitar player who is able to play with de Lucia one day and joke around with lagrene the other day...I would smile too...What a record this man...remained very humble and kind..

Negative comments about Bireli show the immense musical stupidity of those who write them. Bireli is a genius and he is music all by himself.

[Inconceivable] horror movie-level Stupidity has overtaken the planet, increasing for decades. It's way beyond any kind of communicable pandemic that a mere virus could cause. It's actively destroying all societies.

It's incredible how McLaughlin is able to pick every note even in super fast lines. His control of tone is unbelievable.

Zwei Jazzgiganten...

McLaughlin has paid great tribute to Coltrane. No one wins or loses in music. As Coltrane set a standard in saxophone, so has JM in guitar....great stuff.

Amazing how McLaughlin and Lagrene play off each other alternating intricate picking, comping, wailing, walking, and ENJOYING each other. I was enjoying the interplay so much when they returned to the Coltrane line, I was almost surprised. Excellent. Thank you for posting this.

All those who say "Johnny Mac has no soul" just don't listen. More artists play his stuff and want to appear with him than any other artist since Jimmy. Oh that's right, John did a gig with him also. lol

@stupot29 I LOVE JM's tone - it was around this time he started adding a little chorus and distortion, as heard on the After the Rain album. The jazz purists don't like it at all, and I can understand that, because they like everyone to play the same, they don't like change or innovation, which is ironic considering it's jazz!. It works better in a group context, and he has evolved it to what he now does with Godin solidbody guitars plugged direct into a Macbook running Tube Amp 2 software.

Interesting comment. Reminds me of the time I was a teenager in the 60's and I played "Four and More" by Miles Davis for my friends. I was certain that they would really dig it. Before the first song was half-way through they all told me to take that record off the turntable so they could listen to Diana Ross and The Supremes! They thought jazz was pure noise. It was to them but, of course, not to me.

@Rg1527 I didn't actually say that JM was innovating by using chorus and distortion - he was using a 12 string/6 string doubleneck into an overdriven Marshall with the "Mahi Mahi" Orchestra 20 years earlier to get exactly those effects, it's just that there seems to be a school of thought in jazz that says we all have to sound like Wes Montgomery if we play a jazz box, and nothing else is acceptable. JM has evolved an increasingly distorted sound over the years which I particularly like.

The reason McLaughlin is smiling is because he enjoys their magnificent conversation. It's not about playing the most notes per second or being the best, it's about enjoying eachother's art of improvising, an together creating a wonderful dialogue. It's like a conversation between Jesus and Barack Obama.

@filtecuk Ill agree with you there. Im actually in uni studying jazz performance at the moment and there are a few too many people who dont consider anything outside bebop "proper jazz" its people like that who'll never be successful or happy.
Btw, My channel doesnt have any jazz videos theyre just really old metal ones incase you look, im to self concious to post the jazz tuff im playing now as i havent been doing it that long :P

Yeah, I think it's good we have differing opinions, I don't know why people get soo defensive. The argument usually goes from the guitarist to attacking each other over grammatical and spelling mistakes.

They are both playing Gibsons. I think McLaughlin's is officially a Johnny Smith model, Lagréne's an L5 with a floating pickup. They are essentially the same guitar, 17 inch lower bout, carved from solid wood.

@filtecuk I wouldnt call chorus and distortion innovation to be honest.. its just tonal preference. Does sound like a fusion tone though which is why these "jazz purists" may not like it. I personally think its because that tone wouldnt sit well in the classic jazz ensemble format.. But with modern jazz, sure!
Jazz is always moving ahead, with the music not the tone used.

    • @paulschneider7271
      @paulschneider7271 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I am not a jazz purist still I would prefere a less processed tone especially in the context of a duo.
