Why has it taken fifty plus years to discovery this man,Phillip Catherine where have I been ? That was simply awesome, the pair play as one,it’s simply lovely Ian Morrison
Heroin stole my best friend I grew up playing guitar with. I’m so grateful for the jams we had but I really miss that guy. I couldn’t even look at a strat in a music store without crying the first year or 2. RIP Mike Stienfeld.
Phillip Catherine is soooooo underrated, imo. His _tone_ -- listen again to the first few opening notes, the melody, he plays - it's *perfect*. He plays MUSIC. It's very refreshing to hear a player obviously putting the music at the very top of the priority list. Bravo!
I could tell Catherine was dropping the bait on Lagrene by adding some percussive rhythm and when it was Lagrene's turn to take the rhythm, he could feel it drop out then had to step up some of his own to keep the same feel going. Great duet. I heard a different side of Lagrene and I think Catherine brought it out. What fun!
Thanks for sharing eliep37! And some good news :)) For the occasion of Philip's 75th Anniversary, Warner Music France just released on 24 Nov 2017 a 5 CD-Box : ‘Selected Works 1974-1982’. It includes Philip's 4 classic albums 'September Man’ (1974), ‘Guitars’ (1975), ‘Babel’ (1980), ‘End of August’ (1982) and a previously unreleased recording 'Solo Bremen 1979 & 1982’ album. A complete booklet with notes by some great musicians and the original vinyl artwork faithfully reproduced, except ‘Solo Bremen’ which is illustrated by a painting by great artist Gilles Fiszman.
@@AlexHand anyway ,Philip is much precise and in time than Birelli , and also more soulful, i was transcribing the solos and it's even more obvious when you play the video at half speed
Merci messieurs

Philip Catherines tone is so friendly and soulful, great modulation and great timing.

totally agree! he seeks always the melody instead just being virtuoso
Bireli et Philippe vous êtes superbes
Such beautiful simple complexity. Their musical conversation had me in awe. It was like a melding of minds. Just wow!
After 38 year of playing and filtering through so many guitarist I think Phil is my favorite.

Grandissimi entrambi ❤
Loved this! Only Catherine's self-assuredness and rock-solid sense of time are a match for Lagrène's!

Great skill here. But as important- beautiful music. 2- of the greats!!

grand Duo
Welp, I’m selling all my guitars. It was a good run.
Fantastic! - Do you know where they are playing?
Recorded around 1995?
Jean Marc, Monaco is not in France, Monaco is a small sovereign city-state ;)
2007 i think
шок
I'll go with PC melodic style
I like philip but this is destruction through shredding!!
me recuerda a bertin osborne.
He looks bizarre this thin...
Philip is way better than this show up Meola. Just my opinion, he's more natural, Meola is superficial - too much ego...
Do you think the other guitarist here is Al Di Meola?

Surely nobody can have one negative to say on that performance....brilliant!! Philips choice of notes are exquisite.
excelent version except to much reverb.anyway bireli and philip maestros.
I had to stop listening after hearing PC first few finger waggings!
sad for you
