Sometimes you have to improvise. I had to make up a gauge set-up for the 3.5 pounds of air in my Rokon tires. Works well and accurate to a tenth of a pound. Thank you for the video, Steve. Stay safe and stay warm.

Those are good points, Steve. Mine suffer dry rot, then get slow leaking, then the bearings go. Fortunately even bearings are replaceable. Interestingly, those cheap plunger gauges aren't so accurate, either. As much as air tires are irritating to maintain, they make pushing heavy loads of cement around much easier. Big diameter tires make a significant difference, too.

You sure don't need a pressure gauge with a wheelbarrow, it's always flat anyway! Lol! I've modified/replaced my super-cheap wheelbarrow wheel for a trailer wheel. It's a 4.80 x 8 6 ply rated for 750lbs... I have welded the bearing/hub/shaft from the wheelbarrow on it. So to say, I've kept the best of both... Never mind a deflated tire again. Now I am glad you remind us of the importance of not relying on such a dial pressure gauge. Especially this one going up to 220psi! Dave already warned me against those useless gauges. I rely on the pen style now. But I was still missing that low range gauge. Now you published the code of it, it's already on my list! Thanks Steve!

Joe it's amazing how many don't have a gauge at all and just guess at the pressure . I like to think of tire gauges and scale like a torque wrench as we dont use a 3/4 inch drive torque wrench to check 10 FP. LOL

You make an excellent point about pressure gauges. Mechanical pressure gauges are most accurate in the middle of their range. In fact, ASME and API codes specify that when pressure testing equipment, the gauge should be selected so that the test pressure lies between 1/3 and 2/3 of the maximum range of the gauge. In other words, for your 10 psi wheelbarrow tire, the lowest pressure gauge to select would have a 0 - 15 psi range, and the highest pressure gauge would have a 0 - 30 psi gauge. Your 0 - 20 psi gauge is perfect for your application. Digital pressure gauges are usually accurate over a greater range than the mechanical ones.

A few months ago I tried something similar. I had an inflator/ gauge combo like the first one you showed, a couple of other dial type gauges, a couple of the pop out type and a digital one. None of them agreed so I ordered an inflator with a digital gauge. It only agreed with the other digital gauge. Since I had two that agreed I figure they were accurate so I opened up the round dial gauge on the inflator that was wrong and adjusted it until it was right. Couldn't adjust the pop out type and the others so I threw them away. Now I have three pressure gauges that agree with each other. From what i have seen the digital pressure gauges are more accurate. None of the others agreed on pressure readings.

I have a digital inflator/gauge that I inflated my car tires with.
I checked all my stand alone gauges against this unit (Astro) and only found one that agreed exactly (a Brookstone that was under the seat of a used car I bought.)
My cars TPM system says I'm exactly 2 pounds heavy in every tire.
How could I get a gauge calibrated si that I knew which ones were lying to me?
BTW I drive an AWD car so I like to keep the tires fully and evenly inflated.

I have 3 vehicles with tpm and they are always off by about 2 psi. The repeatability of a gauge is something I look at the most so how do we know for sure the exact psi . I think you have to spend a lot of money for a high calibration spec. gauge.

Hi Steve. I find the most reliable air pressure gauge on the market today is a digital type. Available at CTC. I have three different types and they all read the same including agreeing with the read out on my GMC. I have a Honda supplied gauge that came with my ATV and it is close to the digital gauges. Digital sensors are far more accurate including the ones used in scales. With the scales you might not like what they say but they are more accurate than the spring style. Oh one more thing. Wheel barrels do much better with pneumatic tires unless of coarse your filling your wheel barrel with dry leaves or inflated beach balls etc. Love your topics and keep up the great vids.

The gauge at 1:52 would be best suited for checking cold tire pressures on Peterbilts, Prevosts, and Boeings(!)
Mechanical gauges tend to be most accurate in the center half of their operational range. IE: A 5-60psi dial will be most accurate between 20-50psi. A 10-100psi gauge, between 30-80psi, good enough for most light trucks and full size SUVs, as well as checking pressure on temporary 'donut' spares, typically instructed to be kept at 60psi. And a 5-30psi gauge will suffice for most yard implements, such as wheelbarrows, riding mowers, and small tractors. So remember, size each gauge you buy so that what you are checking pressures on measures somewhere in the middle of its range!
    I plan on getting this:
    images.toolsid.com/auto-meter/items/2162.jpg
for mine and my wife's cars, simply because the resolution(gap between psi markings) on it is finer. And our cars cold tire pressure ranges from 30-32psi.
