#5 Had a video editing error. I accidentally deleted what I did to fix my feet before I uploaded it! I used KT Tape to put on the sore hotspots on my feet. Totally stopped the blisters from forming. Leuko Tape works great as well.

Nice tips! Just to add a little bit on tip #2 make sure it's a bpa-free water bottle don't want the sun heating up the plastic and putting all those chemicals in your water while sitting in your car. Thanks for sharing 👍

Why? All I have ever read about BPA says that it only affects fetuses and small children. On top of that, I would say it's near impossible to find a bottle that isn't BPA-free these days, unless you're ordering off Wish or something. I mean, it doesn't hurt, sure, but in this day and age, I would say it's nothing to worry about.

This is even more important when you fly to your destination and have luggage in the car. Nobody wants to dig through luggage in the parking lot after a backpacking trip trying to find clothes. I like to have my driving clothes ready to put on. I also bring a contractor bag to put my pack in so it doesn’t get dirt all over the luggage or the car.

I also keep a large soaked bandana in a ziplock to wipe down with. It tends to stay cool(er) in the car too which feels refreshing. Or even a camp towlette works, but winds up in a landfill :-(

I did a 14r in Colorado and ran short of water at the end. Only water in car was super hot. Drank it anyway on the 20 min drive back to camper. It spiked the temperature in my brain. I was able to speak clearly, it just didn’t make any sense. Got back to camper and cooled down, was ok. Super scary.

Something I keep in mind now too, is that load bearing straps "should" be at a 45 Degree angle too. This also will show you if you have the right fitting pack or not. I've had a couple of packs I was trying to dial in, before I realized the design and fit (for me) was not right because there was no way for the load bearing straps to be at the right angle and I was actually bending the frame, trying to get the straps tightened.

Agree with John, missed what you did for your feet - leukotape, lacing change, sock change, all of the above? What if your pack does not have load lifter straps (Gossamer Gear Gorilla 40)? Is there a way to load the pack or adjust shoulder straps and waist belt to accomplish the same objective?

For lower elevation backpacking adventures, check out the Olympic range in Washington State. The tallest mountain is under 8,000', but because of the amount of snow/rain we get in this area, our mountains have incredible snowpacks and alpine wonderlands.
You'll get amazing elevation gain (enough to make you regret ever stepping foot on the trail, trust me), but stay under the elevation-sickness zone. And, it's absolutely beautiful. I'm very grateful to live at the base of these mountains that keep me active during the year with multi-day trips.

GREAT video as always... Now I hear you mentioning BLISTERS, and as I'm not a YpuTuber I can't make a video of this but... let me tell you I've been working as a dog walker for the last 8 years, walking 4 hours a day (15 km.) So tha solution with that it's using 2 pairs of socks one in touch whith the skin (those regular cotton or wool short socks) and over them a though, polyester, tall football socks... it provides SO MANY benefits for the walking and the hike that it would be to long to explain.... BUT : if you want to I can tell... Cheers... Martin from Argentina by the way

As an add on, make sure you know your elevation gain and decline! A 10-15 km hike doesn't sound like a lot but if you add in 1000m plus of elevation gain its a little bit of a different story.

Once I encountered someone on trail who was looking awful, out of water and food. They said they took the shorter trail down from the summit because they thought it was easier. I guess they didn't realize it was 2.5 mi down and 5k ft elevation change. It was super muddy and there were in white new balance shoes. Pay attention to elevation change and trail conditions people!

I have been doing this since the mid 1960s. What a difference technology makes ! Yes, keep a bottle of water, gatorade, or whatever in the car for when you finish. Same wirh a change of clothes as others suggested. I always drink some water and eat something at the trailhead before starting out. My wife didn't the first time she went out and passed out about 2 miles in.

  • @nk6197

As a Coloradan I can confirm the elevation thing. Elevation lowers the oxygen you have to breathe so everyone feels at least more exhausted and very likely more symptoms. You don’t have to really have altitude sickness to experience symptoms. It’s fun when tourists fly in and go straight to the mountains to ski or hike and search and rescue has to save them because they’re too altitude sick. So if you’re ever coming to Colorado from lower down please try to stay in Denver for at least the first day so you can acclimate. It takes 9 days to acclimate to Denver’s elevation from sea level alone.

If you have the chance to go to 'loopcentrum' (in Horst)- it is VERY well worth your visit!
They measure your feet and film your gait in different shoes. I got perfectly fitting ones and I had 0 problems anymore, even when just before the 40km marker, we had a historical downpour and eventually everyone's shoes & socks got soaking wet.
I was one of the very few who finished the 80 km walk with exactly the same gear. Over half the people bailed (understandably), and well over half of the ones left had really bad blisters.
I had no foot pain, no blisters, had a beer with friends and walked 7 km to my car.
I think I owe a great deal of that pleasure & succes to the people at Loopcentrum

Always leave water in my car, but generally the water sources where I hike are way better than what's in the car. I've been known to bring some home with me. Might have some sitting on my desk next to me right now.

Good tips! Another really important tip is to force yourself to hydrate and eat food throughout the day. Especially at altitude you lose your hunger and thirst. Force yourself to drink a liter of water at breakfast, lunch, dinner, and mid morning & afternoon. Also force yourself to nibble on some snacks throughout the day. Once you get dehydrated or bonk due to no fuel in the tank you’re screwed. Keep fuel in your body and stay hydrated and you’ll be able to more easily handle the strenuous miles...

Ever try getting a prescription for acetazolamide to take when going up to altitude? I've used this med to help avoid altitude illness when skiing in Colorado. My home altitude here in Michigan is similar to yours in WI and it's always been difficult for me to adjust the first couple of days at altitude despite hydrating.

  • @walkerways8695
    @walkerways8695 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Dan, sorry but the load straps don't work quite the way you advise. They are used to pull the pack close to your back when you need it tight for rock scrambles and other tricky manuvers where you don't want the bag shifting and they are used to put the pack at an angle away from your back so the weight of the pack is shifted mostly to your hips. Yes in that mode there is some pull on the front of your shoulders, but almost none on your back and tops of your shoulders. It is for really flat sections or uphills without a lot of scrambles. Not so much on downhills when you want the pack a little closer to your back. With the lighter pack weights these days, you may not notice what the load lifters are really for, but they really make a difference in 30+ lb packs.

I’m just watching this now....after my first backpacking trip EVER that just happened to be in Zion National Park. And I’m also from Wisconsin. And sure enough we definitely made some of these mistakes 😂
Planned way too much for our first night... did Angels landing, and then went to our trail where we’d be camping for the night. Started that hike at about 3pm...our reserved camp site was #9. We just made it past #4 when it was starting to get dark. Had to find a random spot to camp. I was so exhausted I cried in my tent that night 😂😂😂
Next morning had to hike back, up hill the entire way in crazy hot weather and not enough water. Drove to our next trail (where we actually could camp anywhere) and set up camp just one mile into the trail so we could actually enjoy ourselves that night.

I like actually hiking at night if it's a really long single day hike and the constant movement keeps me warm. If I'm at high altitude and low temps and haven't set up my camp and made dinner by nightfall it was a bad mistake for keeping warm. If I backpacked in warmer areas maybe I wouldn't care about setting up at night.

Re leaving water in your car in a cooler. If you are in Grizzly or Black Bear country in the western U.S. you might return to find your windows broken out. Along the Eastern Sierras the NFS will even warn you not to leave a covered cooler in the vehicle because some of the local bears know the shape and smell, of coolers. Leave no food or coolers in trunk or truck in the western mountains.

Lately I've been freezing water bottles and leaving them in the cooler in the car. Ice water after a couple days hiking? yes, please.

For late sleepers...I say come up with a designated time everyone wakes up....people that sleep in always agree with early times the night before lol...then u have the go ahead to kick at their tent early

My buddy that has been backpacking and mountaineering his entire life told me have a pee bottle near your tent so you don’t have to get out in the middle of night and pee 😂 guess I’ll have to remember that when I’m old and it’s an issue haha

Hey man, I love your videos.
Just a heads up, I live in the UK and can't easily access Backcountry_com links. Any chance you could label your gear links, more than just the links themselves? Sorry to be picky.
    Bless ya brother!

Hey Dan, love the channel and all of your input. I was wondering if you’ve looked into the Mystery Ranch Terraframe series, they’ve been on my radar for awhile (I’m currently using the Arc Haul Zip) and I was hoping to get your input.
Thank you again for the great content!

Might just be me, but if the load bearing straps are too tight, it really starts to hurt around my clavicles after an hour or two.

Totally off subject, notice you don’t wear a silicone ring. Seems like more and more outdoorsman do, any reason you have not made that leap or have? I’m back with my metal ring.

I’ve tried those and for me, my skin gets “soggy” underneath the silicone band so I don’t wear one at all because at higher elevation my fingers swell so my regular rings hurt. HTH

  • @JohnVianneyPatron
    @JohnVianneyPatron 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Many many TH-camrs suggest that there be a 45° angle between the you and the pack (adjusted through load bearing straps) so that the majority of weight is shifted to your hips.
The result isn't going to be as exaggerated as you suggest because your chest straps will still hold the pack along your back.
    Bro-science and yet more bro-science🙄

Elevation is no joke - my daughter plays college soccer and we live in the Charlotte area... when she goes back to school (& her school is maybe at 3000' elevation, NC Mts.) she can tell the difference in her conditioning, straight away. And that is no where near what you are talking about...

how the hell you sleep at camp too late, it's impossible to stay in the tent at 7 am already, too hot.
