US Navy Trident C4 ballistic missile Vet here. I got to serve on these boats. Going underway is never easy. Luckily we never got over extended on our deployments. Each sub has 2 full crews, a Blue and a Gold. So ya go out for 70ish days at a time, then come back and sit in an office till ya have to go out again. "Boomers", the missile subs, are the greatest deployment ever. If you could be on the same boat for 5 years you could plan Christmas 5 years down the road. And you get a huge tax credit for only being in the country 6 months out of the year.

The thing I love the most about this movie is that the plot and story are fairly generic but it’s the storytelling, filmmaking and acting that really elevate this movie into something worthwhile. Tony Scott was unimpressed with the script when he signed on to direct, but saw the potential in it so he gave it to the writers of the previous two films he’d just directed Quentin Tarantino and Shane Black (True Romance and The Last Boy Scout) to punch up. And if you’re familiar with their writing styles you can pretty easily identify which scenes each of them put their stamp on.

At the time, Capt Ramsey (Hackman) was absolutely correct in his actions. Full authority rested with the sub commander, and he controlled the launch decisions. That’s why they made the comment at the beginning about the three most powerful men in the world. Shortly after this film came out, the system was reworked to remove the captain’s control, placing the launch decision in the hands of the president directly. I had two friends who were involved in developing the security and cryptography systems to allow that change. Fascinating stuff, but incredibly complex. Layers of safeguards and countermeasures to ensure against unauthorized launches, as you’d hope.

Tony Scott's film style really suits this movie well. Lots of close up shots and fast back and forth scene swaps really adds to the building pressure and anxiety of the whole situation. Definitely one of his best films with an incredible cast.

I had a work buddy who served in the Submarine Corps, U.S. Navy. Part of his job involved target selection if the call ever came. He had some really funny stories.
In his own words: "The entire purpose of a nuclear submarine is to go somewhere, lay low, and be scary."

Gene Hackman is my favorite actor of all time. Such a powerful, passionate and talented performer. I have never seen any other actor among the very most impressive for 5 generations who can replicate any character with flawless and perfect depiction, and his delivery is equally impressive. A highly underated, unrewarded by accolades actor who left Hollywood for its biased envious hiararchy of moguls and actors since Hackman wasn't a bow to the SAG and Film masters and only learned and mastered his craft with extraordinary talent being singularly one of a kind. I salute you Sir Hackman, king of the craft! I must add also that Denzel is an extraordinary actor that has impressed me again and again

Hi Ames!! What a great reaction and edit! I think you'd make a totally fly missile sub driver. On the subject of the word "Greenwich" (for next time you encounter it, which you're going to), this is one of those words invented by the English, and they in their wisdom like to say it "Grennitch". 😆. As a fellow North American, i like finding better ways to say words, but this is one people might get ruffled about. Have a great rest of week, ✌🏼

More: Greenwich, England is the location of the worldwide time standard. When you tell a computer or device your time zone, things like GMT+3 mean Greenwich Mean Time plus 3 hours. Zulu is a military shorthand.

Thank you for doing this reaction. It's a bottle movie (all action happening on a ship) and it is a relentless, smart, character-driven thriller. I miss movies that deal in ideas this seriously. Nowadays, we get "hero of destiny" retreads. I prefer heroism based on deeds and real choices. Your channel is fantastic, keep up the amazing work!

I got my B.S. from UA in Huntsville, and have visited the battleship USS Alabama in Mobile bay, so those references make my feelings very feeler-y. But also deep emotions about the role of prejudice and slavery in building the south. This movie deserves to be seen more today...

19:05 -- RE: "The Driver"; AKA the Helmsman. Pretty much does "drive" using a combination of controls although he won't necessarily be in complete control of how fast the props are spinning. In other words, there's a bunch of people who are controlling power output through the nuclear plant to generate steam which is then used in combination with electric motors to provide thrust. Subs use rudders to turn left or right, as well as "dive planes" to pitch up and down, but could submerge by simply flooding ballast tanks until negatively buoyant. Positive Buoyancy = Floats and if submerged, surfaces.
Sometimes you hear the Helm or officer in command explicitly order for "Up or Down" Bubble, that's what they're talking about, the relative buoyancy of the forward or aft ballast tanks.

Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster. Along with a very young Don Rickles. Another great sub movie, but involving a very different time in submarine technology. If you ever visit Cleveland, stop by and tour the USS Cod. it’s a Gato class sub, still in its original WWII configuration. This was the same type of boat seen in “Run Silent, Run Deep.” Great movie.

Great reaction Ames like always love this movie, with these 2 legendary actors. A fun-fact Quentin Tarantino did some work on the screenplay... polishing some of the dialogue as a favor to Tony Scott.
Tarantino added some bits of his own: including the Silver Surfer bit and the discussion about the horses. Other movie directed by Tony Scoot and featuring Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning that i suggest you watch is "Man On Fire" is amazing.
