Jerry was smiling because Layne was coherent and singing beautifully, which you’re right about but he was not in serious withdrawals and if he was this masterpiece would’ve never happened. A serious heroin addict, like Layne was, can’t function while going through serious withdrawals and he’s not going to sing going through them either. There’s a few videos and a story in a book that talk about behind the scenes of this show. Watch/read them
More like happy he didn't bang enuff 2 nod off mid song my guy. He took just enough to get thru the show. Cantrell is the most underrated writers and singers of that whole Era. Ppl LOVE Layne, and rightly so, but Jerry wrote most songs, is an AMAZING guitarist, singer, arranger of harmonies, and held that band together thru 2-3 albums that could barely be made cuz of Laynes addiction. Bass player n drummer were boozed out so he put the entire band on his shoulders from Dirt to Jar of Flies. If they had come out a little sooner or later,...who knows. But they were overshadowed by the Nirvana revolution, not to mention Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. And I admit I was part of it at the time. He was both, he was a heroin addict who became more shy because of his deteriorating condition and more reclusive with time. He was absolutely Shy or at least self conscious about himself at this point.
He was actually very shy and self conscious because his drug use caused a number of his front teeth to fall out. If you watch the unplugged performance in its entirety you can kind of notice he has no teeth in the top row. He also faces downward so the lighting hides his mouth more for this reason. Then he spent the next 6 years after this hiding in his Seattle condo until dying of an overdose so I’d say he became shy.
Yeah agreed. He was damn good with Mad Season at the Moore too. I love the unplugged album, but it’s hard for me to watch one of my favorite singers of all time have to read his own lyrics and sing missing teeth.
Yes! Bingo! One of, if not the best, vocal experiences I've ever seen Layne give us. Such a tragic loss. That Staley/Cantrell combo of harmony and writing will be remembered as one of the best in rock history. AIC will only get bigger as they are remembered and discovered by new listeners in the future. 🤘🏼💀🤘🏼
Everyone talks about how he was dealing with some troubles but as a young man maybe 13 or something I saw them as on top of the world. I saw Layne and knew that it was possible to get those emotions out and still keep it together. Which would later put me on my own stage singing from the heart. With the mindset that I had watching this way back when. Thanks to all the grunge bands for making me feel.

Even in throws of his addiction.....Layne is incredible....such a powerhouse of vocals. .. Beautiful...haunting....his pain is palpable....miss him so much❣️❣️❣️
You would have never known that the same guy (Layne) in this video, once literally hung from the rafters in a Massachusetts club with low ceilings back in 1992 and belted out Love Hate Love. The reason Jerry smiled back at his bandmates isn't what you think. The band was supposed to rehearse for the Unplugged show back in Seattle, but no one showed up to practice. So when they got to the theater to actually do the show, Sean Kinney (the drummer) and Mike Inez (bassist) were arguing with Jerry Cantrell (guitarist) about whether Layne could even do some of the songs in his condition (Layne was deep in a heroin addiction during this show). Jerry was the only one of the 3 that had complete confidence that Layne could do it. So when Down in a Hole came around and Layne hit that high note, Jerry turned to the other two and smiled like "I told you so". Layne hit the high note in Rooster and Jerry did the same thing.

Beautiful Layne is the most talented musician ever! I love Kurt Cobain, Freddie Mercury and many others, but there is something about Layne which makes him stand out. There is this profound sadness in his beautiful voice and eyes, and the way he sings is very haunting and just touches the hearts of millions. I love his bands AIC and Mad Season. I am so inspired by their music, that I created a music studio in my home, learning and playing my guitars, etc. I also decorated my studio with pictures from AIC MTV Unplugged and Mad Season's 1995 live performance at the Moore in Seattle. I wanna do something in memory of amazing, beautiful Layne, but I am not sure what yet... And reaction videos like this are amazing. Thanks for doing it. Check out Mad Season's song "Wake Up" written by Layne. Such a masterpiece!
Layne brought the candles and asked for lava lamps and dyed his hair pink which just made the ambience perfect and that’s not the only reason (Layne), this MTV unplugged is the #1 of all time✝️✝️✝️
You should do "Love Hate Love" LIVE at The Moore next. The most powerful notes I ever heard from Layne in his prime(1990). This is 1996. Glad you enjoyed AIC😊

"90's music"...the Grunge era. Unfortunately 4 of the top 5 Grunge bands front men have OD's and/or committed suicide. The angst of the the music was real. This performance was SO good, especially when you consider that Layne Staley was really struggling with addiction at this time..and if you, watch more of this unplugged...notice that the guitarist/singer (Jerry Cantrell) has a trashcan sitting beside him. He was suffering from severe food poisoning. They still rocked it!
His fiancee Demri Lara Parrott died of an enlarged heart due to heroin overdose. He died from heroin/crack overdose. Laynes story is truly tragic and unique. Yes he glanced at the lyrics throughout the show(first time on stage in 2 years). Jerry wrote this about his ex... but said it was fitting for Layne that night. And yeah Jerry put a smile e few times. Once when Layne hit that note and another time when he hit the a note on "Rooster"(which was about Jerry's dad in Vietnam). This band is GOAT status. You're beautiful 😊. Have a great day
Ahhh! Why why why did you have to mention her name? I didn't wanna know about her. I googled her just now and it made me even sadder than I've been about this all these years.
Because they decided to create the abomination called "Reality Television", They should have changed the name of the channel to RTV. I've seen that MTV is still a channel but I don't think there's any music on it. IMHO the decision to create so-called Reality (read: edited for drama) Television is why we have DT as the president of the U.S. RTV melted the minds of people who thought it actually WAS reality. OK, I'm off my soapbox now.
"Down in a Hole" was one of many hits from Alice in Chains 1992 album 'DIRT' - probably one of the top 5 albums of the 90s if you ask me - its an absolute gem of an album. "From mid-1996 onwards, Staley was out of the public spotlight, never to perform live again. His struggle for much of his adult life with depression and drug addiction resulted in his death from a speedball overdose at the age of 34 on April 5, 2002. Staley was ranked at No. 27 on Hit Parader's list of "Heavy Metal's All-Time Top 100 Vocalists" in 2006, and at No. 42 on Complex's magazine list of "The 50 Best Lead Singers of All Time" in 2012. Seattle officially declared August 22, 2019, as "Layne Staley Day."
Nice! I love Alice In Chains. Nirvana also is a live performance with MTV Unolugged, “where did you sleep last night” and “the man who sold the world” are great
Its crazy to see generational gaps in music and genres popping up left and right. Everyone of us can say "I cannot believe someone HASN'T heard this songs cuz I grew up with it". Well thats just it, good music will never die and it's always there for everyone.
Just to get you interested: Maynard James Keenan (the lead singer for TOOL) dedicated an album for addiction which was mainly inspired by his friend Layne Staley. The album is by his side band "A Perfect Circle" and the name of the album is 13th Step; which is a reference to the 12 steps program of AA and the 13th step being their album. Check it out!

Wouldn't say he was shy tragically he was loosing his battle to heroin addiction at this time and was about to quite singing completely. So sad we lost him...he was incredible at his best! LOVE HATE LOVE LIVE AT THE MOORE THEATRE
I changed my name legally in 1997. I changed my name completely. For my middle name, I chose Layne. The album Dirt was huge in my life and it was a no-brainer for me. R.I.P.
It's a tragic and gripping performance from Layne and co. Sad and soulful, charismatic and compelling, knowing it all will be ending soon. He was baring all of himself to you and his demons from within, reciting his life and his epitaph' Hard to really encompass the depth of this performance by jumping into one song. Start at Nutshell and let the journey begin. The trip will have you in a very eery almost haunting state of mind, seeing this man giving in and reuniting with the love of his life, from the spiral that has consumed him.
Even in this stage....the harmonies were amazing. I'm so glad I'm old enough to have seen the potential. Also sad I never had the chance to see them live. It makes me wish I saw A7X before the Rev. passed. Pantera is another band I wish I was blessed to see live before Vinnie and Dimebag were taken as well. GOD bless the legends.

Unfortunately Lane Stanley was on a downward spiral due to heroin and died short after this was recorded, but you need to check out Mad Season if you like Lanes voice.
Yes he is reading the lyrics! He is too far gone when this was recorded so like everyone intoxicated its hard to remember. Since it was live TV its better to be safe than sorry if you would forget lyrics! ;)

interesting take on the music without having any context. now I implore you to research the band a little because i think with a little more context you'll really understand their music. plus they have several albums worth of solid material for your listening pleasure.
It’s not necessarily that he’s shy, it’s more of the fact that he was sickly from his addiction to Heroin and Cocaine. He was literally nodding off during this performance.
Yes, he was high on heroin during this. He was almost not going to perform, but one of his "friends" got him in the last minut his fix so that he could get through this performance. Source: David de sola: the untold story.

He was suffering from severe food poisoning. They still rocked it!
Check out Nutshell from the same show
When music was real.
I love the moment at 0.31 great skills of rolling your eyes
Haunting show, legendary performance, addiction is a lifelong struggle, there's no end!!
Have a great day
Axe Ish thank you for this 🙌🏾 I just love their chemistry in this honestly ♥️ thank you for the compliment 🥰
Ahhh! Why why why did you have to mention her name? I didn't wanna know about her. I googled her just now and it made me even sadder than I've been about this all these years.
The Unplugged series was amazing I don't know why they ever stopped doing them
Because they decided to create the abomination called "Reality Television", They should have changed the name of the channel to RTV.
Layne Staley was not shy he was in pain they were going for years b4 this. One of the best voices in rock history RIP Layne and and Mike.Starr
I think this is the best band ever. I said "I think". Do more!
Nice! I love Alice In Chains. Nirvana also is a live performance with MTV Unolugged, “where did you sleep last night” and “the man who sold the world” are great
I love how you groove, humble beauty! 90s ruled!
Im sorry for my broken English, I'm from Finland
AIC and Layne were one of the very best bands/sounds ever and you're so beautiful.
Nice to see that this epic AIC tune touches the younger generation your a part of.. Nice revue and i have to add that you are a beautiful young lady ; keep the good work have a nice new-years eve..
Lovely voice and personality. Great reaction👍👍👍
You have a great taste in music my friend! Stay healthy and pretty Godbless you!
The heartbreak of drug addiction . The mans last performance before his death from a drug overdose...
Great time to live throughout the 90es .but so many deaths of drugs stuff nearly killed me lucky to still be hear . Still struggle with mental health .90es was a great and sad time .rip layne one of the greatest singers the voice
Amazing!!!
Your smile is infectious
You should be listening to this with headphones to really hear it...
This performance was from 1996
Doesn’t feel old 😝
Wouldn't say he was shy tragically he was loosing his battle to heroin addiction at this time and was about to quite singing completely. So sad we lost him...he was incredible at his best! LOVE HATE LOVE LIVE AT THE MOORE THEATRE
Depression, drug addiction will do that to ya, believe me I know...Another reason why Grunge had the most emotion, and heart in it's music
I hope you or who ever is going through it has recovered 🙏🏾🙏🏾♥️♥️♥️
I changed my name legally in 1997. I changed my name completely. For my middle name, I chose Layne. The album Dirt was huge in my life and it was a no-brainer for me. R.I.P.
One of my top favorites
It's a tragic and gripping performance from Layne and co. Sad and soulful, charismatic and compelling, knowing it all will be ending soon. He was baring all of himself to you and his demons from within, reciting his life and his epitaph'
Hard to really encompass the depth of this performance by jumping into one song.
More AiC!
01:58 he's not a shy guy, he's just sick at the moment
Yes he’s reading the lyrics. At this show he’s banged up on dope and hasn’t sung any of these songs for the past three years.
He did amazing! They did amazing 🙌🏾 him and Jerry really complimented each other honestly. Truly appreciated that when I listen to it outside this reaction
Nah if u look at all the unplugged videos he sings with his eyes closed... He has these songs memorized
Great performance 🎭 im so done with people writing negative comments about Layne drug abuse he showed up and was extremely talented but the music industry is full of drugs get over it and give credit where credit is due
He was bad on drugs during this show. MetallicA was in the audience for this show. No joke
He was deteriorating rapidly from drug addiction. The lights hurt his eyes. He squeezed out this performance with whatever he had left in him.
Just super sad man 🥺
@@SINExo Indeed. His voice was unique and amazing, but he was a very troubled person.
soooo much soul in music owwwww !!!
Watching first reactions to my music touches me everytime
RIP the greatest grunge front man in history
You should listen to heaven beside you. Its my favorite Alice In Chains song
Please react to Their song “Don’t Follow”.
One of my favorite songs of all time. Also, I will happily marry you, and love you forever. 🤌
AIC unplugged is beautiful
Layne wasnt alive much longer after this... FUCK drugs!!! He was a rock legend in my eyes.. RIP.
Grunge was the last great era of music...All their Unplugged is priceless. Check out Nirvana
Please recommend a video? Recording tomorrow 🙈
@@SINExo do come as you are for nirvana unplugged
@@SINExo where did you sleep last night
the unplugged one. its such an iconic performance.
Unfortunately Lane Stanley was on a downward spiral due to heroin and died short after this was recorded, but you need to check out Mad Season if you like Lanes voice.
Short? This was recorded in '96, he died in '02.
Yes he is reading the lyrics! He is too far gone when this was recorded so like everyone intoxicated its hard to remember. Since it was live TV its better to be safe than sorry if you would forget lyrics! ;)
🥺 I didn’t even sense that something was wrong because I know that a lot of very talented artist can sometimes come off as awkward 😭
It's so moving because he saw his battery was at 1% and he cranked it up to "11" and died singing his passion
Shy hah, watch them live, Keep rocking!
He was really far gone there. Did you notice the black gloves? I remember they said that he had to wear those to hide injection marks.
He was the greatest singer ever, his name was layne staley...and unfortunately he wasnt shy he was just completely gone on heroin at this point in his life. He died 5 years later R.I.P
Rip love you and your music
Love AIC, and this girl is crazy cute.
The lead singer Layne Stayley was near deaths door by this performance there wasn't much left of him its sad someone of his talent was taken so young one of the best voices ive ever heard legendary band
Sam Porter 🥺🥺🥺 too young! Rest in Peace Layne ♥️
She’s so brave…….. going in blind!!!! LOL! hope you listen to more of AIC.
I'm climbing out of my own hole now. Thank you so much for doing these videos. Alice is one of my favorite bands. Also do "Mad Season- River of Deceit" Layne's other band.
Another group i would like to see is early Zac Brown Band.
Layne is a rock God. And you are beautiful. It actually hurts my eyes to look at you, it's like staring intoxicating the sun.
You’re ridiculously cute and combine that with this song and it’s the making of a great reaction video.
🥰♥️
This song was a cry for help.
Loved your reaction your gorgeous no creepy guy
ur accent is awesome !!!
interesting take on the music without having any context. now I implore you to research the band a little because i think with a little more context you'll really understand their music. plus they have several albums worth of solid material for your listening pleasure.
Layne had the voice that could serenade demons.
It’s not necessarily that he’s shy, it’s more of the fact that he was sickly from his addiction to Heroin and Cocaine. He was literally nodding off during this performance.
More Alice in Chains please this was them about 1996 check out there song Would from 1992 album dirt official video version
"He's so shy."
No he's not, he's into something.
heroin
he was shy. he lost many teeth, he was skinny, unhealthy and into heroin, he was bipolar he was arguing with band mates etc
Yes, he was high on heroin during this. He was almost not going to perform, but one of his "friends" got him in the last minut his fix so that he could get through this performance. Source: David de sola: the untold story.
Cocaine and heroin
I believe he was an extremely reserved person. He barely left the house for years.
I miss you so much Layne Heroine is not good Rest dear friend The waking Dream😓
Any chance you can help me out a bit? I’ve been trying to upload my reactions for these unplugged videos, but each one of them gets completely blocked. I’ve tried altering the audio as well as making the music video transparent. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Your videos are excellent by the way 🤘🏻
Hey 👋🏾 sorry to hear that but apparently newer YT channels don’t have it easy and get blocked. You can dispute the claims or just start an instagram and post there 👌🏾
I love me some AIC, you shouldn't talk over Layne when he is singing, you missed the magic of this great singer. RIP LAYNE YOU ARE MISSED BY SO MANY........
Miss you AiC, miss you Layne❤✌
