1:08 yo my man, bocchi the rock has traction as an anime. it came put during the hype fever of CSM/ChainSawMan release season and still almost outclassed it in terms of memes amd held its ground. it is popular. The team behind Bocchi the Rock is basically the same core team behind the production of "Frieren" even though they are technically made by different studios... only reason Bocchi has not gotten 2md season yet cuz frieren got too popular and the team is busy making its season2 , thats actually it. thats literally it. Bocchi is incredibly popular both in Japan and international audience also hope you are in better health now. let us all be healthy and stay hyped for Apothecary Diaries
There’s a video of a Japanese guitarist who worked with making the music for the show doing a demonstration where he cuts his guitar string and plays Bocchis solo with a sake glass, def need to watch!
Some fun details to point out: Their second song, "To Be a Constellation", requires only one solo to be played. However, when Bocchi was having equipment trouble, Kita stepped in and ad-libbed over the section that was supposed to be Bocchi's solo. For the drummer and bassist, that means they would need to repeat their section once Kita is done and Bocchi recovers. We can see this at around 5:24 where Ryo turns to face Nijika and nods/signals to her, pretty much saying "Hey, we have to repeat that part one more time." Also, the lyrics to the song "To Be a Constellation" perfectly illustrate the mentor-friend relationship between Kita and Bocchi and how they both admire each other for possessing abilities/skills they respectively lack: Kita admires the hard-work, dedication and skills to the guitar that Bocchi has and Bocchi wishes to be more outgoing and positive like Kita. They are each other's constellation.
There was one live concert where the VA sang their respective ED songs and joppi sang rock n roll morning light. It was streamed once and hard to find but its out there.
She won't. Doesn't really make sense why she would be singing at any point also. She's the lead guitarist. Bocchi doesn't know how to sing also. And in general most bands only have one singer at a time. Only other "singer" is Ryo who does back up. And seems like in the manga that Bocchi hasn't sang or even ever considered it.
To quote something I read elsewhere that I loved: 'There's a horrific catch 22 with severe social anxiety, where being hypersensitive to anything that might cause social embarrassment means that a) you are absolutely fucking terrified of being cringe, and b) you can't actually tell if you're being cringe. Your cringe alarms are always blaring at maximum volume anyway so you have to override them to do any social interaction at all, and then while they're overridden you go and do something so absolutely mortifying that the memory will torment you for decades. Bocchi the Rock is the only time I have ever seen this accurately depicted in any form of media.' Hence, The Stagedive. It's so real to me it hurts :P
once again, this show just fully understands what it's like being a young musician down to the nitty gritty details: 1. having a string break mid song is not necessarily the end of the world. most notes are doubled on the lower strings, you just need to play them higher up the neck. the problem is that when a string breaks, all the other strings go out of tune due to the change in tension. that's why Bocchi thinks that as long as she gets the B string (the one below the high E) in tune, she can adjust her playing. and obviously, having to actively rethink your playing on the spot instead of relying on muscle memory is not an easy task either. 2. a fretted guitar is somewhat of a fixed intonation instrument. that means if the string is out of tune, every single note on the fretboard along that string will also be out of tune. using a "bottleneck" (normally a short metal tube) eliminates this issue because the bottleneck functions as a "moving fret" in a way. you kinda slide into the notes and adjust the exact position by ear, which gives it this whobbly, scratchy sound. it does in theory fix Bocchi's tuning issues, but it's a ballsy move. not only does she completely have to improvise the entire solo on the spot - you can't just play a normal solo with a bottleneck - but you absolutely have to know what you are doing to pull it off. thus the comment "who whips out the bottleneck at a time like this?" 3. Kita's improv is exactly the kinda thing a beginner guitarist would play. nothing fancy, just a few chords and octaves, but played with absolute confidence, and that's what sells it.
Loved it! As a guitarplayer who was often playing in local bars with my band, I often used that old trick to pick up a consumers' glass or beer bottle to play slide on my guitar. So seeing Bocchi saving the day by doing it out of necessity slightly wet this old guy's eyes. This has been written by a guitar player for sure!
Fun fact about "To Be A Constellation" is that it was written to be playable with a broken string after Bocchi's slider solo. One of the music arrangers for the show, Ritsuo Mitsui, actually uploaded a video showing him playing the whole thing after cutting one of the strings.
Bocchi's Slide trick is actually really cool due to the way it works. Guitars are "technically" never in tune at every point on the fretboard, the frets are spaced apart in an approximate ratio to the length and tension of the strings, pressing down on a string shortens the amount being vibrated and changes the pitch of the note. The variance between a "true" pitch and the pitch of the frets is so small that it's almost never a problem, but trying to do a solo with a broken string and another string that's out of tune would be ridiculously hard to adapt under pressure. Using the bottle as a slide allows her to functionally play the guitar like a fretless fingerboard (similar to violins), changing the pitch to match the notes based on her ear training. And here's the BEST part: The reason Bocchi was able to do that under pressure is because she has clocked THOUSANDS of hours of training, she's definitely practiced that technique and the presence of mind to rely on her skill and training to control the pitch is proof of how much of a professional guitarist she really is. She EARNED that moment through years of hard work
It might not have been as big as it deserved but this anime had a huge impact for people that wanted to learn music, introverted or not. This show literally drove sales of guitars to the point that (a few) music stores were solding out in Japan. Also afaik there are two Bocchi guitar collaborations, one of which is the guitar she bought at the end of the episode which previously wasn't a real model (the colorway) in the real world until Yamaha made the limited-edition Pacificas in celebration of the show. (They may have planned it from the start, but still cool.) The other's the Epiphone copy of the Gibson Les Paul Custom (the guitar that his dad lent to her) with Bocchi's signature of it. Also, fun fact: Most, if not all, of the instruments and equipment on the show-- amplifiers, guitars, pedals and all -- despite them not rendered with much detail are true-to-life and has already been catalogued by hobbyist on the internet, and I think there's an official one out, for the fans to check out. The details are just amazing on this show.
The ending song is a cover of "Rockn Roll, Morning Light Falls on You" by Asian Kung Fu Generation, who are well-known for performing one of the Naruto openings. This series heavily references the band; each episode title plays on a song title, and each Kessoku Band member's last name is taken from a member of Asian Kung Fu Generation, matching the instruments their namesakes play. I highly recommend checking out some of the live performances Kessoku Band has done. They are all fantastic, especially the two songs they performed on The First Take. Asian Kung Fu Generation also performed "Rockn Roll, Morning Light Falls on You" on The First Take recently, too.
What it's already over i love the final episode It had some of the best kessoku band songs from the kita solo to the bocchi bottleneck slide solo it was too damn good and the ending cover of one of my favourite ajikan song Korogaru Iwa, Kimi ni Asa ga Furu sung by bocchi definitely made me tear up
1:17 They've got multiple albums (like 3~4 iirc) released as Kessoku Band on TH-cam and Spotify and the like. Definitely suggest giving all the songs a listen
I know you guys probably do all your voting on patreon - but if you're looking for another shorter slice of life anime that is exceptionally good, I recommend "A Place Farther Than The Universe"
I believe the studio that made bocci also made frieren. They were caught off guard how popular bocci was, and so season 2 got added to the queue of projects a little late.
MUST WATCH: One of the guys who worked with making the music for the band did a TH-cam video where he cut his own guitar string at the point were Bocchi snapped hers and played the rest of the song with a sake glass bottle thing, I forget his name but search on TH-cam and you’ll find it easily it’s so amazing to watch!
The manga is a lot further along than the anime. To put it into perspective, currently Bocchi and Kita are in their last year of high school, Nijika is going to University, and Ryo has moved out of her parents house and is living on her own.
@@Z0D1ACC I like the anime quite a bit more than the manga but it's also really good. The funny animations add a lot of good jokes to the anime and no music either obviously so the concerts aren't as good but the rest of what makes bocchi great is still there ! There are 7 volumes available in Japan (still ongoing) and this season only adapt the first 2 so they still have a lot of content left so it will probably take a long time to have everything as an anime :)
the song at the end is a cover of the "Rock'n Roll, Morning Light Falls on You" song by Asian kung-fu generation, many things in Bocchi the rock are inspired by the band. The names characters and titles of the chapters for example.
Such a great show, I've started to rewatch because of you covering it. Very much enjoyed your reactions and found myself looking forward to it (almost) as much as the Dangers in the Heart ones.
I'll admit to being a softy when it comes to emotional movies, shows, anime, whatever - what I did not expect to gut-punch me with happy tears was the moment Bocchi improvised a slide with one of Kikuri's dirty glasses. Arguably the first rock and roll song "Rocket 88" came to be because the Delta Cats had to stuff newspaper in their busted speaker. There's nothing more rock than making due with broken equipment.
The VA's actually have a podcast with the author (I think) so they kind of are Bocchi group in real life. Also I think Season 2 was hinted a few days ago.
K On! is a similar series from 2009 about High School girls forming a music club, but largely involved a lot more cute wholesome antics instead of music. But it was very influential in getting students, girls especially, interested in music. I recommend it if you liked this one. There is also "Ya Boy Kongming" which is about a historical chinese tactician (think Sun Tzu) waking up in modern Japan and becoming a music manager. Its not the same as Bocchi of course, but it has a similar vibe of starting out in the music business in a silly way.
Season 2 has already been announced, but we had to wait extra time for Bocchi's showrunner to pull another classic out of his sleeve with Frieren. So even though the extra wait sucks, what we got in return is worth it! Finger's crossed he can pull a 3-peat with Bocchi s2! (somehow, Bocchi is the first show he's ever been the showrunner for. He's a regular Steven Spielberg of anime!)
I read a bit ahead in the manga and I am pretty hyped for Season 2 whenever it comes out. The Bocchi antics and struggle continues and does not get old.
There's probably enough manga for at least 2 more seasons and i think its still going. I think season 2 is confirmed but not sure dates have been released yet. They did make a movie, but it was a recap movie comprising the whole season, I didn't watch it but there was probably some new scenes in it.
"Crazy Rocker chick" or "stagediver" are way better names to be known by compared to "You over there" or whatever she said she was called in the first episode. So, upgrade?
The manga is still going, and they probably have enough material for two more seasons. I think the popularity of the show took the producers by surprise, so they didn't have any plans for any kind of continuation, but Kessoku Band's album was one of the top selling albums on 2023, the live shows of the band (the voice talent along with a band of session musicians) sell out every concert, and apparently the two compilation movies were successful, so there should be more Bocchi on the way. Scheduling is a problem though since Bocchi's director is also Frieren's director, and Frieren sold even better than Bocchi, so odds are that Frieren season 2 will come along sooner than Bocchi season 2.
It's completely different genre from Bocchi, but you should check out another girls band anime called Girls Band Cry, their songs are more of my taste of rock than Bocchi
300,000 yen is about 19,000 dollars. Because it's a Japanese anime, all amounts are stated in yen. Also, the scene of the empty school doesn't just represent everyone going to the gym, it represents the nostalgia and respect for school that only Japanese people have, and it's a way of expressing it that only people who were educated in Japan can fully understand.
