      These look like exactly what I need, the Amazon link doesn't point to the BTP 650. Are these no longer available?

    Im looking at buying their outdoor subwoofer, I'm hoping they could get more videos out. I think they have great products. I recently accidentally killed a set of their IO655W's and looking at the AP650, AP850 or P83 along with one of their subs

    I've had a pair of Advent outdoor speakers, have them run off my zone 2 of my Msrantz preamp being driven by an Adcom GFA 535. They are mounted under an over hang that keeps them out of the rain. Sound is nice and where they are mounted boosts the bass. Had them going on 25 years. Not bad

    Great Video JOE! These are exactly the setup I'm looking for - bluetooth, but wired into the electrical because I want to mount them - and yes outdoors. These look great, but Joe is there a better set you'd recommend that is similar in price (or more $) but better than these? I just saw your leaderboard and there is no others on there - sorry to bother - but that leaderboard is a wicked idea buddy! Nice touch!

    It’s been 10 months since this video posted. Is this still your choice of outdoor BT patio speakers or do you recommend something better? I wouldn’t want to spend more then this. It’s $300

      I haven't reviewed anything since in that category. I can say they're still working well.

  • @adamjj85

    Good review Joe. I am just finishing up my outdoor system and considered the AP650 passive version of these, but the response in the ASR review was not pretty which is similar to your measurements as well. For the price though, I agree it's hard to complain. I ended up taking a gamble and went with the HTD Q65's which don't get much attention. But they were the only other passive option I could find at at a similar price point. They're not perfect either, no 1k dip, but a boost at 4-5k. But at a distance and off axis I would think the treble boost on outdoor speakers doesn't really matter much.
    Next stop, outdoor subs!

    • @joentell
      @joentell  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I saw that. I am constantly giving feedback to companies, especially OSD, to try to create speakers with a flat response and well-behaved off-axis response. I'm sure that's easier said than done.

    Hi Joe, it is nice to have flat curve speakers for outdoor and ceiling, but you can't sit in the perfection location ears direct to the speakers, so when design the speakers, the high ends are boosted.

    • @joentell
      @joentell  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I measure using an average within a listening window not just directly on-axis. Good performing speakers remain consistent within the listening window.

    I was pretty disappointed with my older outdoor speakers (Dayton Audio). I purchased some DefTech AW6500 speakers and was much, much happier. I also paired them with a subwoofer later which took them to the next level. I highly recommend reviewing/trying out the DefTech ones. I'm sure there are other good brands out there. My opinion is that a lot of outdoor speakers are basically poorly made hunks of plastic.

    • @rumbleyoungman8495
      @rumbleyoungman8495 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What subwoofer did you add and what are you using to push the speakers? I'm definitely interested in getting 4 AW6500

    • @jothammcmillan8854
      @jothammcmillan8854 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rumbleyoungman8495 I made a custom subwoofer enclosure for the outside using a bottom firing car subwoofer, port vent and plate amp from Parts Express in varathane coated plywood. I also added a wireless sub link to this outdoor sub and the entire package plugs into a gfi outlet. I'm definitely pushing the envelope for the plate amp but so far, it's been a champ. When I know it's going to be super stormy, I just unplug the sub. I'm planning on offering it as a flat pack kit next year for other adventurous (idiotic) enthusiasts. All that said, it sounds amazing and adds a lot. There are other more legit outdoor sub approaches but they usually seem to involve a sheltered amp with wires running to a plastic enclosure of some kind.

    You need to get Parts Express Dats V3! Start showing us some impedance graphs and T/S parameters! Can pick up resonances with squiggles in the impedance too! I am wondering if that 1.2khz is a resonance, a flipped polarity with one of the drivers (woofer or tweeter flipped), or just bad crossover design and phase cancellation.

      Someone else can do a deep dive, but just a basic frequency response is already more than what most other outdoor speaker reviews I've seen have offered. It's not much use figuring out what is causing the dip unless you plan on fixing it. In this case, Amir at ASR has done a deep dive into the AP650's and detailed the cause of the dip.
      These videos are a balance of subjective and objective. You seem more interested in objective, but many are turned off because it can get rather complex to interpret what the graphs are saying.
      I would like DATS for some DIY speaker projects though.

    • @jacobdunklee1
      @jacobdunklee1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joentell I’m into both subjective and objective. I just figured if you are using these personally in your backyard, you might want to fix them since you heard issues when listening. I also didn’t know Amir measured these already.
      On the subjective note, I am not sure how far of a drive you are from Phoenix, but we are starting to do some abx listening tests to see what are thresholds of hearing differences are. You should come out for one! We do measure the stuff after (audio precision devices and microphone arrays) to see what the measured differences are, after we’ve listened.
      The most up to date thread is on car audio junkies under Phoenix meetups. I do try to keep the one on audio science review up to date as well, but sometimes forget until the day before.
