Another outstanding diatribe? Soliloquy? All the brilliant terms created for the BYD acronym had me in stitches in addition to all the other references and analogies. I'm 62 years old and caught them all, lol. Very well done, my friend.
There is no mention of the Dealer, who obviously ducked for cover, referring the claim back to BYD. I am sure this is not an isolated case of car companies throwing customers under the bus. if you are serious about buying a new car, the service and reliability aspect has to be a major consideration. While many CHINESE models seem to attract buyers due to their very competitive price and wealth of gizmos, the risk you take with vehicles which are recently introduced to the market is cause for reflection in view of the spineless ACCC. Chinese vehicles are immensely popular for those seeking what appears to be a bargain vehicle but you have to wonder how many corners were cut to achieve such prices. In the next few years the resale value and possible reliability issues will become worrying.
The Chinese are extremely good at finding ways to cut corners, make things out of fake materials ( tofu dreg materials) and to totally lie about their products. Also, every Chinese EV manufacturer is majorly supported by the Chinese government. Some companies are losing tens of thousands of dollars on each car sold. Just let that sink in for a minute and then ask yourself why would the government support them so much and why are they dumping thousands of EV cars in Europe and around the world. Hint: it’s not because they’re nice people and have your benefit at heart. STOP buying Made in China!
That's why I have a 20-year-old petrol sucker. I just can't stand the total control of me in a new car. I simply love driving. Thanks for great videos.
Your BYD acronyms made me cry laughing. I just wish I could have liked the video more than once! The Big Yellow Dog really went for the Cool's Below Your Dick with treating them as a customer.
A major reason EVs even exist is because they represent a new business model. The more efficient they get the more the price of energy will be raised to guarantee profits. The big money is gonna game the shit out of the "energy transformation". Putting it simply, profits will be maintained by fees, taxes, and increasing the cost of ever smaller amounts of energy. It will only be a few years until having a car follows the "software as a service" (SSAS) model and a subscription to drive your computer with wheels is required so that profits can be locked in. No corporation cares about the air you breathe.
After watching the video on the Shark, it was a definite maybe. I remember the ending of the video had the "known unknowns" about BYD, including service. Glad to see that unknown is now known before I shelled out the money.
Slightly off this topic but imagine living in a block of flats in which one of your neighbors parks their EV in the car park underneath. So even if you do not own an EV yourself, you are in constant danger of being caught at home if their EV decides to instantly self immolate for fun and giggles. Who is going to pay for damages? And who would be held culpable for any loss of life that might have taken place?
@Herkimer_Snerdyou must be stupid if you think an EV isn't dangerous in a confined space, the battery is an oxidizer and should never be under a building or a tunnel. They must be in the open
@Herkimer_Snerd But you can put out most ICE fires with a basic extinguisher while the EV needs specialised kit before it starts softening steel with the fire..
BYD has this "Blade" battery technology that supposedly does not explode or go into thermal runaway when damaged. They have a video showing a puncture test where they drive a nail through the cell and it does nothing. This was supposed to be the selling feature of the EV conversion kits i worked with. They claimed a 25 - 30 year lifespan, the cells withstand temperatures up to 500C etc. I noticed right away the poor discharge current, maybe a 1.5 C rating if you are lucky. They are also very heavy. I wonder now if that puncture test was actually real and they are as safe as they claim...

I had a Samsung Galaxy S21+ mobile phone that completely failed two weeks prior to the 12-month warranty running out. Considering that it cost $1400 I thought thought even 12 months was a bit 'lean'. When I returned it to the store, I was initially informed about "store policy," at which point I let them know that we weren't talking the same language. I did agree for a period of 'assessment', but after six weeks and unfulfilled promises of contact, I returned to say that if this continued, I wouldn't be anyone's sweetheart for very long. I received a brand new Galaxy S24 the following day.
I live just outside Yass near Canberra and commute daily. Mate of mine was convinced that it was a good idea to get one of these for the daily into Canberra. Back to his 2005 BA Ute and never been happier.
Isn't it amazing how *none* of the Atto 3 / Seal / Sea Lion / Dolphin reviews online ever consider issues such as the availability of spare parts? I have seen some that mention concerns about the stated limitations of the warranty... but even here most 'reviewers' sweep those concerns under the carpet.
Great point, I’d love to see some predictions here. With some of the early EV’s now at the 8 year mark - who’s buying them, esp those with 100k kms + on the clock and no options for battery upgrades. 8 years and these cars are scrap making them less environmental overall.
Canberra is freezing at times... A Peugeot designed for Europe buckets out sensational heat , a ev in canberra would would be insane, with the power used to heat the cabin
Canberra is cold in winter by Australian standards but it's way warmer than North America and Europe. They seem to manage mostly okay with their EVs. They occasionally have winter storms that cause problems for most cars. I live in Canberra so I know what it's like. It was 15 deg C today, which isn't that cold. I think it was about -2C this morning, which is also not that cold.
@@simoncrooke1644 I moved there in 1996, and left after COVID, and rode my bike everywhere.. Canberra I do miss, but it can get cold for someone who grew up in Darwin.
Exactly, they are just as destructive as ICE. The real solution is mixed neighborhoods with stores in walking distance and good public transport like trains and busses.
Unless BYD were refusing to replace the battery, this seems like a beatup. Did I miss something? The idea of full refunds under warranty is practically unheard of in almost any retail experience. This failure sounds unfortunate but not unusual that a car broke down under warranty.
No I am Australian. and that's how it works in Australia. They would need to not be offered a repair or that repair to be massively unsatisfactory like for example having to wait a very long time for the repair for it not to be deemed as satisfactory warranty. Just like needing the motor or transmission replaced. Try any car dealership
Yeah I don't get it how many news article you hear about petrol car not getting refund under warranty for blown engine, i see almost all getting repaired
Still happy to use a piece of machinery that mixes gasoline with air, prior to the intake valves, ingests the mixture and compresses it to 10 atmospheres in a rigid confined space, sets fire to it and uses the expansion of the gaseous mixture from the resultant controlled conflagration to push on a crank and propel me towards my intended destination. I know quite a few people with these BYD vehicles and own one myself. First time I have heard of a traction battery issue. Ours is now two years old and has so far had no measurable degradation. We did have a charge controller that wouldnt allow full rate charging. After determining it didnt present a safety issue, BYD ordered a replacement controller. When it arrived it was replaced under warranty. They kept the car three days just to make sure all was OK (it was the first one they had replaced). We were given a replacement vehicle while ours was away. Three months on it runs like clockwork. No problem at all. Personally I have had much worse service from Honda who only offered a clapped out Toyota Yaris for the three months it took to get a replacement Civic hybrid gearbox from Tokyo.
I wonder if this story would have hit mainstream media (and JC's radar) IF the car was ,say Toyota RAV4 which had blown its engine, and Toyota had replaced the engine free of charge and provided a loan vehicle while they were performing the engine transplant?
Agree and also suffering from the UK heatwave here in Yorkshire where I am still watering my plants with 2 full water butts after the wettest May on record. Oh and the temp is 16c just now rising to a mind blowing 22c later. It's called summer !!!!

The BYD's are distributed by an Australian company called EVDirect. No idea what warranty is like in other countries where you buy direct from BYD but here you are dealing with a small importer not BYD itself. My sisters ATTO3 had an issue with the 12volt battery which stopped the car working (18 months old) and she had to source a new one herself. Apparently, it's a very common problem. She is an EV evangelist and keeps nagging me to buy an EV but the more I look at it the more convinced I am that it's not a good choice.

I was going to ask about your thoughts on buying the Ute. Wonder how many more people will reconsider?
Thanks for this John. Very interesting how BYD treats their customers when things don't go to plan...😮💨

No I am Australian. and that's how it works in Australia.

No idea what warranty is like in other countries where you buy direct from BYD but here you are dealing with a small importer not BYD itself.
