  • The Vanquish VS4-10 Phoenix Portal is enjoying a New Year with a rebuilt transmission. No more clicks! Apparently my pinion/spur mesh was too tight.
On a lovely and warm (2°C) afternoon, it takes on the Zen Rock Garden. A little, flexing. A little meditating. A little muscle. The Super Swampers really hook up well in these conditions.
Also, a New Year, a new channel intro screen. We’d been using the original intro clip since the channel started, and it was time for a change.

Looked like fun playing on the course. Noticed you replaced all the frame screws with stainless. Nice touch. Thanks for sharing.

I live in Canada and like to drive year-round, so when I build kits or do overhauls I usually replace hardware with stainless. Maybe it doesn’t look as scale, but no one likes rust.

    That paint is beautiful

Thanks so much! I messed up the paint the first time and actually had to repaint the body. Came out better the second time! Here’s a video of the whole re-painting adventure: th-cam.com/video/Knj3pb2CLeU/w-d-xo.html

Thanks! I wanted to test the tires on some technical terrain to answer your question: do cool temps affect performance? It was 2°C and the tires did great. They were squeaky and grippy! Probably because they are so new and clean. Definitely recommend Super Swampers as a winter tire.

@@rcstories_ca that's so interesting! I would've thought the tires would firm up, but that's so cool that they still perform!

That's a cool color scheme. I built a phoenix last year. It's a very nice kit but the downside is I've only driven it once due to not wanting to tear it up, only ran it once at rv campground in the grass. Expensive knickknack to say the least. Still waiting for trickrc light kit to be back in stock

Haha! I was the same for while. Didn’t want to smash it. But just go for it. It’s an amazing trail truck. It will handle any terrain and it’s so stable it will rarely roll. I only run it in on 2s to keep the speed down. Faster would probably mean more crashes. I was lucky and got a Vanquish Series 1 light kit. It’s not ideal (it was meant for the earlier Vanquish bodies, but it works). The Series 2 Phoenix lights came out later but I’ve never seen them in stock. I do want to install them if they ever show up.

Your Phoenix looks awesome! Do you have the portal version? Been on the fence about building one

Yes it’s got portals. I want to get a straight axle kit too, just trying to save up some money. The kit is reasonable, but it’s a lot of electronics if you do all the servo functions. Honestly, it’s probably the best build experience you will have. The transmission is unique, but it makes sense once you get into it. It also drives amazing. It’s got a lot of low down weight and is very planted and stable. If you can afford it I wouldn’t hesitate. The stock VXT tires are a complete waste so plan on getting some better after market tires.

Been SERIOUSLY considering building the Phoenix portal kit. But DAMN! Please tell me that was just an effect of the location, or the video, or something... Or, are they all really have that much transmission noise??? Just sub'ed BTW. You have several rigs that I've been mulling over for a while, and have been enjoying watching the run videos, and checking out your mod packages for each. In fact, oddly enough, with each that I've looked at, a great many of your mod choices were things I already either have on hand, or was planning to order. 👍

Sorry for the late response. I’ve been off TH-cam for a few weeks. I have a pretty good microphone setup and when the camera is close the the truck the sound is always way worse than it really is when you are actually driving. And it is pretty echo-y there.
That said, I did have clicking issues with my initial build. I tore down the transmission recently and found two issues: my spur/pinion mesh was too tight; my transmission was not perfectly aligned in all the holes. The mesh needs to be quite loose. When mounting the transmission, slowly tighten all the screws a bit at a time (like you would when mounting a tire) so that it seats flat all the way around.
However, my notes say that this was shot AFTER the rebuild. It is a complex transmission and thus it is quite noisy, especially compared to something like an Enduro Stealth-X. Still, the Phoenix is a blast to drive.
