Anyone who tells you "firefighters are overrated" has never been in an emergency situation before. When me and my father were defending our home from a 20 meter wall of fire eating through the reed forest next to it, we begged for the firefighters to be plentiful enough to come help quenching it. Thankfully the fire didn't reach our home, just killed two weeping willows and a quarter of our apple orchard.

I have been and firefighters are completely overrated. I was shocked at the incompetence and ego when they shipped my grandmas stroke BLS as gen weakness when she was altered. Getting yelled at by the medic for disagreeing was a shock, especially pointing out the facial droop and slurred speech. lucky for her the ambulance crew upgraded as soon as they were away from the fire crew. The fact fire and EMS are together so firefighters can get more money hurts us all.
Talking to firefighters I have to agree,

@@kingofthechair5752dude I've been an actual EMT, one of those "real medical professionals" you talked about. Let the guy who knows what he's talking about speak.
The other guy is right, incompetence can be found everywhere in the medical field.
Also every 911 call I've worked on firefighters were first on scene, 12-lead and bp cuff attached and taking readings. So yes, they absolutely are medical professionals, it's actually what they mostly do.
But while to get on an ambulance, either ALS 911 or BLS like I mostly did, you just need your NREMT.
Whereas fire guys almost always have their paramedic.
In other words, they're actually even MORE medically trained than we are, plus trained in hazard safety, plus they have their bachelor's in fire science usually.
It's true, fire cadets can be douches, I was actually sexually harassed by one in EMT school.
But speaking as someone who has not just talked to but also WORKED ALONGSIDE AND FOR firefighters, as first responders go they tend to have their shit zipped up tightly and they do their jobs well.
That said, it's not as if I don't believe your story :c
Sadly, first responders are human, they make mistakes, and sometimes those mistakes lead to death. It's why the first response field has a high suicide rate too

I just recently had a reason to love EMT folk even more...I was walking my dog one afternoon & an ambo came screaming up behind us. My dog's ears clearly hurt when he's got a siren a few feet away, so I knelt down to cover his ears & reassure him. About 30 feet before it got to me, the ambo's siren cut off. It cut back on about 30 feet beyond us. I don't know if the driver saw me grinning & waving & jumping, but to make sure I got my "thank you" across I went & got a few bags of candy (including RedHots, Fireballs, & Hot Tamales, of course. And chocolate!) & a thank you note that I'm delivering tomorrow. This is the same station that saved my entire neighborhood from going up in flames 3 years ago when a local nutjob firebombed a pickup truck with camper topper, trying to kill the people inside....& they were parked about 18 feet from my house. I STILL can't believe we didn't go up in flames. That brought about my first "Thank you" goodie package to the fire station.
And the final blow-me-away fact was, the police came out with shovels & brooms & such to clean up the molten metal & glass & other garbage that had melted & been blown all over the street & sidewalk. The police, after 5-6 hours on scene, dragged out their janitorial tools & cleaned everything up. Deepest respects to all emergency responders, and THANK YOU!! 🤩🥰😘

My wife was in full arrest, I was performing CPR and had dialed 911 and via speakerphone alerted them for the need for EMS. First responder was a cop with an AED, who took over CPR, not that I was tired yet. The EMTs arrived next in the fire truck from the firehouse across the street, who then took over from the cop. The paramedics arrived around 15 minutes later, as they were returning from the hospital and hooked up the Lifepak, which unfortunately displayed absolutely no pattern. I suspected as much when the AED remained ominously silent about shocks, only advising when to pause for monitoring, then prompting resumption.
One look at the monitor, I looked at the paramedic and said, "Not even PEA, she's gone". The EMT just stood there wide eyed, I was a military medic for decades and allowed my EMT-P to lapse.
Know who doesn't arrive as EMS in a fire truck? Guys like me, I arrived in an armored combat vehicle that was converted into an ambulance. We also had a Hummer ambulance, but I usually was in the field with the troops, so had the armored vehicle.

My dad, a firefighter for many years in Denmark.
In the late 70's, before I was born.
Was on a call, where on the 4th story of a building, the floor collapsed.
Somehow, his foot catched on something, and he dangled face down, looking at the flames beneath him. They didn't have radio's at the time. So his buddy, once realising that trying to get my dad up alone, would likely cause him to fall. Raced out of the building, telling what had happened.
As the story goes, the fire captain initially had to threaten every single firefighter at the scene, with getting fired. Because they all wanted to run inside, dropping what they were currently doing. After quickly formulating a plan, my dad got rescued.
He had extensive surgery on his lower leg and foot, as well as minor burn treatment. That injury, stopping his active firefighting career, and caused pain his entire life. But turned into a 20 year career as a paramedic. As well as 40 years as a part time fire instructor, and planner, in national service.
Though an anecdote, I as the kid of a firefighter, have always been inspired by the few stories dad was willing to talk about, as well as the moral codex he instilled in me and my brothers.
When finally a few years before his passing, he became more willing to talk about the specifics of his career.
My view of dad turned, from him just being a hero to his sons, to a genuine Hero with a capital H.
And so did my view of every single firefighter, and paramedic.

My first thought was, "I have a fire extinguisher, whose sole purpose is to get me through that fucking door, whose staying on the hinges at that point is entirely optional".
Because, he's spot on about how toxic smoke is from house fires, largely due to burning plastics. And Halon ain't exactly a wonderkind, it's a horror, as on exposure to heat, flame and worse, hot metal, it'll decompose into hydrogen fluoride, which becomes hydrofluoric acid on contact with water and can trivially etch glass. It literally killed MRAP vehicle crews, when the Taliban and AQ learned to fire their RPG into the extinguisher tanks on the vehicle. Your air conditioner will also be releasing that same nastiness. And your fridge.
The plastics, well, anything from known carcinogens through old faithful, cyanide gases.
As for the moron from the video, well, he's welcome to never call EMS and fire and just man up and take care of that bleeding, major crushing injury, vehicle crushed in on his family (assuming he can ever find a partner that could tolerate his existence) and burning building that's collapsing onto him and his all by his little lonesome.
Because, as the first lesson we learned in medic school was, "Eventually, all bleeding shall stop. One way or another".
And the US population in 1980, when I graduated high school was 226 million, we're now at 339 million and climbing, so the number of calls will increase. Especially given our new high energy lithium based batteries, who make thermite look like something pleasant when they go up in flames.

They raised money for their equipment through boot drives, fundraisers, using the firehouse (hosie) as a bar on the weekends, hosting block shoots, renting out their buildings as a social hall, and serving breakfast every weekend. They also serviced all of their own equipment, including doing mechanical work on their trucks, and... just as an aside, would wake up out of a dead sleep when the fire claxon went off in the middle of the night to save people's lives, pets, and homes. You know, hero's work.

I see no reason to find an assumption like that so obvious it should be "yea ?????" The reason there are more paid firefighters is due to medical and other hazardous situation calls and the fact that that the areas that have paid firefighters are areas like large cities/municipalities which have only grown in the past decade which logically would only increase the size of their departments. Not because of fires and fire prevention however I would be curious if those fire response rates include woodland and car fires or if it's just structure fires. Next time you’re in a wealthy suburb or even just some cities, look at the actual stations. the firedepts are often the nicest newest buildings with the shiniest biggest toys. Not to mention luxury lazy boys and new massive tvs and bunch of trager grills etc.
Most firefighters are respectable hard working heros that put themselves in harms way for the greater good of us, and we salute you. @@AsifIcarebear3 I highly suggest you watch his video.
His inflammatory delivery aside, his arguments are basically:
      1. We have way more paid firefighters despite fewer fires, which makes no sense.
      2. It doesn't make sense that firefighters are doing non-firefighting work, and if we want to publicly fund people to do that work, then we should do that instead of expanding the scope of what firefighters are supposed to do, because....
      3. Firefighters clearly don't sign up to do medical work, they sign up to fight fires.
      4. The hero worship firefighters get as a profession is undeserved and/or arbitrary, as there are more dangerous professions that don't get the same treatment. There are heroic firefighters, but not every firefighter is one, and the media regularly misrepresents their actions as more heroic than they are. He gives an anecdote here about how firefighters put out his housefire, and the media reported on it as them saving his pets, giving the impression that they burst in and pulled the pets out of the burning building, when in reality they just put out the fire and the pets happened to survive inside. This is technically correct but highly misleading reporting.

I used to live in a pretty rural village in the UK and the fire station is significantly closer than the hospital. It was pretty common for fire fighters to show up as first responders because it would take a while for paramedics who could be miles away to get there. There are the dedicated first responders, but you still fall into the same issues with rural areas where the few who live super close either aren't on call that day or have ended up far enough away that the fire fighters would have a significantly quicker response time

I'm figuring they didn't print that and sew it into my liner for a morale boost...

  • @Prizzlesticks

For the first point, I don't know how common it is, but when I overdosed, it was the fire department who responded first. Lovely gents. I'm sure if I had lost consciousness or had a cardiac event or compromised airway during that time, they would have responded appropriately, but given I was still lucid and functioning, they mostly just monitored me while waiting for EMTs. Mostly, I was surprised by how willing they were to talk to me, ask questions, and offer encouragement. I was very unprepared for the amount of humanity and respect I was given.
It wasn't my first OD or crisis, and I don't remember much about the one EMTs responded to. I do remember the cops picking me up and blatantly shit talking me on the radio with me literally in the backseat, rolling their eyes, and being general ass holes when they responded to a friend who wanted me taken for evaluation at the ER--I hadn't even done anything at the time, she had just called and said she was worried I was a danger to myself. So that was not great. I'd have to say, of the three experiences, the firefighters were my favourite. Again, I wasn't really fully awake with the EMTs, so they were probably lovely too. But I didn't know firefighters even responded to those types of incidences until then. So thanks, firefighters, I appreciated it. When you're feeling like a fucking idiot for an impulsive action like that, and your emotions are all over the place, it's nice to have people who treat you with dignity and compassion.
Also, when I was younger, my room caught on fire. They must have felt really bad for having to ask whether I did it on purpose while I was bawling my eyes out, because they came back with a teddy bear that I still have. I'm sure they give kids stuffed toys all the time, but it was a small act that gave me a lot of comfort at the time. I lost my art desk and all my books and some keepsakes, so having that bear was worth a lot. :)

I'd imagine making sure you're awake and lucid is very, very important when you OD. It also probably helps EMT's when they arrive on scene; if you were in extremely critical condition and needed something ASAP, it _might_ just be something worth knowing. Just a bit.

    • @Prizzlesticks
      @Prizzlesticks 2 ปีที่แล้ว +31

@@DefinitelyNotAnOsprey What would be worth knowing? Securing an airway? Yes, I'd agree. My surprise at the time was that firefighters were trained or sent to medical emergencies at all. You expect them to go to fires and things that need tall ladders. At the time, I had no idea they could be sent out to medical calls when EMTs were unavailable or further out.
By contrast, frankly I wouldn't trust my city's police to bother with CPR, let alone ensure a patient was still able to breathe or not choking on their own vomit. But the cops in my city are especially idiots, so I don't presume every city experiences that level of incompetence. I'd still hesitate to send a cop to any mental health medical crisis, though, even if they did know basic first aid.

I mean, I think a majority of the time having fire fighters go to medical calls is a waste of resources, both personal and equipment, and there are lots of studies that show for paramedics to be good & high performing they a high number of critical calls - thus the “paramedic” on every engine (or even every transport unit) model leads to negative patient outcomes. But I know that because of research. Fatty doesn’t. And if he can’t walk, it is going to take a minimum of a engine crew to get him out of the house. Maybe a ladder and an engine if he is on the 2nd floor.
And there are lots of medical calls where you just need manpower, regardless of if the fire dept does medical stuff or not, just to get the patient out safely. Anything with the word “arrest”, anytime you can’t wheel in the stretcher, So on and so forth.

This "Amazing Atheist" is nothing but a troll with a channel who, honestly, sounds a little envious. If you ask me.
When I think of firefighters, I also think of all the forest fires we've had in recent years, both here, in Canada (which affects us) as well the horror show down in Australia in 2020. So, yes, the number of firefighters has needed to increase. A LOT. And you cannot tell me that when someone is facing a fire with no idea how bad it could become and every instinct is telling them to run, but they go toward it isn't brave. That's the very definition of bravery.

Reminds me of that famous video of French firefighters going after the French police when the police were using disproportionate force- literal outright violence- towards protestors and it’s kind of glorious to see them stepping up and protecting the people as they always do, though horrific that it was even necessary to step in because the institution that is responsible for protecting people from other people, were the ones escalating and committing violence against their fellow human beings. You could tell how frustrated they were that fellow workers in the emergency services could be so corrupt and cruel, when the fire and rescue crews just want to save people.
Also their masks and breathing apparatus are handy against tear gas, so there’s that too lol
