    Arm flying up is a falling response.
    The best longboarders control their arms (minimal movement) as much as their body.
    That’s the number one thing I work on when longboarding.
    Foot movement means nothing if wagging arms to me. I see it in a lot of “pro longboarders” videos as well.
    Pretend you’re a karate expert. Every movement is from your core.
    Strengthen those ankles and keep the core low.
    Joel Tudor was also a martial arts world champ as well as longboard champ.
    Longboard skate boarding with an oversize mega longboard helps too.
    Deeper stiffer single fin also helps to keep the board from rocking side to side. The shallower fins make the board tippier.

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would agree with you and currently work to control my arms. However, some people say arms are a part of the style. Jehvson silva vs joel tudor couldn't be any more opposite lol

    • @woodman1701
      @woodman1701 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Arms are great if they’re controlled like say, Tom Curren. Then it becomes body English.
      I have not seen the surfer that you mentioned next to Joel Tudor yet.

  • @ThunderWizard

    You're cross stepping for the wrong reasons. That's OK, So did I when I transitioned from a shortboard to a longboard... Cross step forward after a bottom turn. Then you are walking "uphill." Its natural and organic and easy. cross step backwards when your nose is pointing "downhill." ( as you are speeding toward the shoulder or the wave is starting to pitch steep)... Then you will be ready to cutback... Cross step backward so you can sink the tail... cross stepping is not a trick... it is about navigating the wave and your longbboard. Just cross stepping arbitrarily is about your ego and not surfing the wave. It's not natural and that's why its hard for you... Watch the experts. They do this naturally and organically. Afterthey bottom turn, they cross step forward. When they are ready to slow down, they cross step backward "uphill." It looks natural when they do it because it is... They aren't forcing it. You are forcing it.. In a nutshell... You are trying too hard and for the wrong reasons... Just surf the wave and then you will cross step when you need to and then it will be easy, feel good and you will look like a pro...

    Just "load" the frontside inside rail more by placing your back foot closer to the rail. If you force pressure to your toes, ( or dedicate your brain to thinking that ), it will make it harder to make fine adjustment from toe to heel. Better to have a flat foot that is neutral. The weight of your foot just being closer to the rail will come more naturally then pressuring your toes.

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you're right to a certain extent. However, I do believe that surfers do it both ways. It may come down to personal preference... or maybe I'm totally wrong. I do seem to do better if I think about rail engagement rather than pressure on my toes tho....

  • @michaelng1008
    @michaelng1008 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don’t mean to overstate to obvious but as someone who struggles to nose ride it seems like it all boils down to having an extreme sense of balance in critical moments. Duh right? I find that when my core can keep my balance and stay relaxed I do my best.

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great point ! It also depends on how each of our brains work as we all take different approaches. For some, worrying about rail engagement will do the trick.. others it’s core balance. We will all get there somehow in the end hah !

    The idea of land based practice drills is a good one but on your board ,not so sure!..An alternative option is to pop into a carpet store and ask if they've any off cuts they don't need or would sell for a few Euro/Bucks,
    Get enough to allow you to place beneath your Board and copy the outline,and cut off the excess.
    Then You'll have a Perfect Copy of your board which you can't break! And roll up when not in use...try doing your foot placement drills...afterwards when competent try close your eyes to test your accuracy. A dirt cheap training tool. Enjoy folks.

  • @odin4life

    The fact that you think you need to change the angle of your foot to be on your toe tells you that being on your toe isn’t really that great of an idea. It’s much simpler to just walk an inch or two closer to the rail. No one says you have to be exactly on the centerline of the board.

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm I get what you're saying, but trying not to use my arms has really progressed my cross stepping to a certain extent. I have used my arms so much that I don't fix the root of the problem. I'm a beginner, learning from your vids. I have noticed that you look like a bit stressed. Every step you make is very nervous and too fast. Looking at the vids it think that the key is to stay longer one one feet before putting weight on the other. And checking by eye or feel that it is in the right position before shifting weight.

  • @TromboneAl
    @TromboneAl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In this video and the last, you talk about trying to slow down your bottom turn and "board setup." I'm working on the opposite! I want to make that turn as fast as I can so I can be going down the line and cross-stepping even on waves that close out quickly. I try to keep my trailing foot back near the tail when I pop up so that I can turn immediately.
    Take a look at 1:18 in your last video. That was perfect, but you just turned a little too much and fell off the back of the wave. Most of the pros seem to turn very quickly. For example: th-cam.com/video/xT_R5-ElqIU/w-d-xo.html
    Thanks for your videos!

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I think we're talking about the same thing. You might be working on bottom turning fast which is good, but getting the board to travel up the wave too fast may not be good. That's been my problem... I bottom turn and angle the board way to far up . So now I'll still go for a fast bottom turn but just make sure the board isn't traveling up as fast. So confusing haha!
