So simple and so effective. Went to try this after watching and connected with FAR more consistency. Was just over complicating things before. Thanks dude
I almost want to do a response video to this... When I was learning royales the cue I was taught for balance is to make sure the backslide foot stays behind your back shoulder. This guarantees it's always behind the balance point for a backslide and almost naturally pushes the torso forward into the skeezy royale position. The 5 biggest tips to learning any new grind: 1. Stall more 2. Stall more 3. Stall more 4. Stall more 5. Stall more. It helps to start on an unwaxed/unpainted curb or concrete stair also. Step up into the stall at whatever speed you're comfortable at, get use to the position, and just step up faster and faster until you're hopping off one foot and then eventually jumping into the position. People, especially beginners, want to rush into things too fast. Stall more, stall where you can't slide until you're completely comfortable getting into the grind, then stall somewhere you can slide until you have it stable. Baby steps the entire time.
Couldn’t agree more. Widening the stance and keeping that back foot behind the trailing shoulder will only add stability. Great points Daniel. 👍👍👍 stall stall stall stall stall. Too many beginners are trying switchups before they can cleanly STALL the grind. Lol
I'm going to make a confession as a 39yr back to blading skater, Royales never did click with me. I could land some here and there but as a whole they were mysterious. Recently I've been studying some clips to understand why but the standing squad thing in this video just seem to resonate with me, I've stalled it numerous times but that just made it all make sense, at least in my head and it felt right. Can't wait to hit my box tomorrow!!!
Well unfortunately I've skated once since this. Weather was a mess and now unfortunately I'm fighting covid. Though in that sesh I was able to get a few which is great for me but still felt I needed more practice before commenting. Definitely felt it's a huge step in the right direction.
Not a beginner but haven’t skated in 13 years. I just got my new skates Friday so this is helpful as I try to start relearning grinds. But first step is getting used to rolling around again.
Same, got my aeons a few weeks ago and cannot stress the importance of just getting used to rolling and balance points etc. Spent my first park session perfecting stalls ony
I kno I keep sayin this but I love this channel. So glad u started it. Its helped tremendously with my journey back on the boots after being away so long. I wanna add my kiddo loves the boot life now he cant get enough and its all because of ur channel Ben. ✌🏻❤️
This is a really great tutorial Ben! I used to be so scared of royales back in the day. It's repetition, and fundamentals. I wish I could say the same of any mistrial variation. They still get me.
best royale tutorial I've ever seen! I also have the cults but with kizer fluid V frame. The combination of small backside plate and tall frame makes it impossible to master it for me yet. But your first 2 steps are great advice. I'll work on those to gain more strength. thanks!
can do frontside for a good few weeks and working on royale now. tried to jump a small p rail to stall, slipped backwards exactly like u said. will try the steps in between to step up first
I remember trying my first Royale. I fell backwards & hit my hip on the edge of the curb. I had a huge purple bump for about a week. I got one when I fell down skitching once too!
Thanks for the video, currently learning royales. Wasn't quite sure how to go about 'stepping up' to a royale like I've done with the other grinds I've learned. This definitely clarifies how to do that. Hopefully this will help a lot so I don't have to worry about just going for it and slipping out 9 times out of 10.
I m one of those who can do Farvs but not royalles. I think this video will help me for sure, too bad i m coming home from the skatepark at this moment xD i ll try the drills at home. THANKS
The best advice I ever got was to think of it less like a frontside and more like a soul grind. So for frontsides I always lead with my right foot. So before that advice, I was trying to royale by starting a frontside and then dragging my left foot in... and I always just slipped backwards / sideways. But when I soul grinded, I would put most of my weight on my right foot. Likewise, I realised that my friends advice was, for a royale, put most my weight on my right foot but in a balanced way. And so I practiced in my shoes for a few weeks at random times, getting comfortable, and almost as soon as I tried it in my skates, I got it. This was about 30 years ago. But yes, your advice is perfect. It's pretty similar to what I did.
Just started relearning these after like 10 years off my wheels. Last piece is critical. Slow and steady wins the race. Been really careful not to go too far outside my comfort zone when learning. I don’t bounce like I used to when I was a boy!
Great video going to use some of these tips to help perfect my Royal, And re learn my backside royale I'm learning switch royale right now so this all helpful. Also love the yellow moonshine anti rockers those look so good 👌🏾
I wish I saw that video before I broke the two bones in my hand (at frontside). One year of break -> and now with better protection, less rushing, I am going to progress once more :)
So I NEVER managed to understand this, especially backside. It always felt really sketchy and given the fact I'm in my 30s and blading is new to me, I genuinely thought I wouldn't get it. Went to an indoor park and found a ledge and practiced jumping on with focussing on rotating during the jump and forcing my knees to continue the rotation and face the backwards lean position and I actually managed to land a few! Amazing tutorial!
Right. First off I'm having crazy deja vu as the cartoon bit comes in. Then I see the pumpkin and think Oh it must be a re-upload. BUT, then I see you front side from your latest retro aggressive video. My head feels like scrambled eggs. Is there an explanation or is something really messed up in this Matrix
this is actually what I want to try next. While doing frontside I tried Royale and slipped right out landing backwards, sucked. I do love how the Royale look though, it reminds me of my fav thing in Inline Skating...Parallel Slide
I've been repositioning my left foot from slight frontside to slight royale mid grind. I knew it wasn't right but it is a step that doesn't involve leaning. Lol
@@iRollerboot I think so. They use a material that gets extra cold when it's wet and evaporates slowly. I always wear one of their caps under my helmet in the summer. It works really well and a lot better than just soaking a cotton hat or something similar. I think they brand themselves as a "cooling technology" company.
I was trying to explain this to my friend the other day. I always tell him to visualize and attack that's what I do. But priming the neural pathways sounds better.
Thanks for tutorial! As 42 yo, which came back to skating 4 years ago since 2001 royals have been mission impossible for me. Last year managed to make it, but I’m still struggling with “step 5” jump on the royals with boot down rather than tilting from frontside/shifty (doing frame only) motion.. I will be trying put all together again and let’s hope after 100+ tryouts, something will start looking good. Also I’ve notice to struggle to sit down low once I’m locked on the grind.. Any idea how to improve that? Last question 🙋🏼♂️ should my back be straight line (like sitting 🪑 on the chair) or it can be little bend? Sorry for long comment. Great video and tutorial 👊🏼💪🏼🍻
Also i wouldn’t worry too terribly much about keeping you back erect. I think it’s generally advisable to have a good posture, but there’s clearly capable skaters who skate in a different manner.
Me at home at 1:30AM taking my skates out and do royale at the floor hahah. I also stopped skating some years ago and now will continue, ALONE.^^ am going at a freestyle hall tomorrow, guess it. Alone. But i want to do this sport with all my heart. Dreamed about that sport at night in the years i didnt skate.
Trying to learn this trick, I have a problem with how exactly to get in that position with my rear foot. This is pretty hard for beginners. So far I was unable to make my sole plate touch with the rear foot, can't bend it like that but I will keep training :)
It’s a great question. I honestly think this is one of those things where everyone is different. Ledges usually offer a bit less risk, and beginners tend to gravitate towards them because of that. Which makes sense. But then there’s the factor of wheelbite to consider. It’s one of those things that beginners have to figure out for themselves. Just like some experienced skaters love handrails and hate ledges and vice Versa.
I'm currently learning royales and find the hardest part to be the pain on the outside edge of my foot... Pretty much the main thing stopping me from learning them
@@iRollerboot roces m12... Might explain it😂 they have such a narrow soul i just have to get so much lower on them, likely causing the pain... Stock liners, featherlite 3 frames
I've recently started skating again after many years and I'm struggling to relearn Royales. No matter how low I get, I can't get my backslide plate down, and definitely can't touch the backslide plate to the ground just on the flat ground. What am I missing? I feel like I have no ankle flex in my skate at all.
I had a go today, maybe I was going too slow but I keep slipping backwards and smashing my right hip, feels so unnatural trying to bend far enough to get my backslide groove down
