    1. Number your tracks 1:42
    2. Label your tracks 2:13
    3. Use the same track numbers and names for each song - label if "unique" 3:02
    4. Make sure you have crossfades in place for edits 3:54
    5. Get a dry track 4:33
    6. Consolidate your tracks 5:43
    7. Once consolidated, export 6:28
    8. Tempo maps 7:13
    9. Don't put all your songs into one project file 8:03
    10. Decide who's editing and if alternate takes are needed 8:21
    Awesome video Glenn!

    I remember when I recorded a choir and mini-orchestra for dirt cheap (upon the pretense that it'd lead to more work, better paid) I did a fairly basic recording but it was in a church, the acoustics were great and it turned out really nice. The whole recording lasted around 2 hours and I got a phone call a couple of days afterwards asking if the conductor could come in and choose a few samples to put on a CD. I was happy to do a very basic mix (as all the microphones were static and the acoustics of the church really did all of the hard work) but when the guy came in it was a nightmare. He had no notes as to when and where he wanted the samples from, no track listing, no idea of what I'd actually tracked so he was asking for individual instruments louder even though I'd recorded the orchestra with 4 f*cking small diaphragm condensers (perfectly placed, might I add - it really sounded cool) I ended up sat with him for hours ripping out my own hair before he said "Cool, thanks" and didn't offer a penny more than what I'd been paid to RECORD (not edit and mix) and went off on his merry way. Cheers dude.

    Just a note, at 6:40 you say to export after consolidating, but consolidating already makes new files, so you just need to grab the correct files from the audio files folder. Applies to PT and REAPER. Rename if needed.

    • @ChristopherRoss.
      @ChristopherRoss. 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +The REAPER Blog Yeah, but its so much easier and cleaner to do an export than to go file hunting. EDIT: When you say export, do mean bounce? Because that changes the conversation.

    • @TheREAPERBlog
      @TheREAPERBlog 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      sort by most recent. Couldn't be more easy.

    • @MadJack122
      @MadJack122 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +The REAPER Blog Honestly Exporting is quicker, it means you can quickly dump them into a folder of a harddrive, external, memory stick etc straight after you consolidate instead of using the audio files folder with the ancient drag and drop technique.

      He isn't a professional comedian. I like to think that when he says "bass player" he is really referring to any sort of player. The main point he continues to drive home is "Go Practice!!!"
      Kind of like the CT Fletcher of instrument practice motivation.
      CT Fricker.

    • @thepablorz
      @thepablorz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +preacher of nothing When you and your bass playing brethren stop pulling non-stop bullshit in the studio, then the jokes will stop making sense and will go away. Come on, dude...at least have better studio chops than the vocalist...it won't take much!

      Bloodbath and Beyond
      I'm not a bassist, I'm a pianist...
      And unless it wasn't clear (and I really don't intend to repeat this again), the problem isn't with the joke - it's with the constant repetition of it, video after video.

    This is probably gonna be one of the most helpful contributions your channel has made to the recording industry in the long run. A lot of people get super confused about this subject and assume it's down to the professionals to sort out absolutely everything, so they never ask questions like these. It might be a much shorter video, but it would be awesome if you did the same thing on "How to prepare your tracks for professional MASTERING" too!

      Yeah, most of my work is metal but I wanted to get into more midi and electronic based sounds so I'm working on a dubstep album (yes, it takes almost no talent and is very noisy). I gotta say it's an entirely different writing style and workflow. Same with mixing and mastering.

    I am a drummer (I know, I know). But, in my spare time, I make electronic music (I know.. again, not your thing, but whatever).
    I have been working on my current music for over 3 years.
    I do not know how to mix, and my bands keyboardist who runs a small time studio has offered to help me out with the mastering part once my music is complete, BUT, I have been wondering about this for a while, and there isn't much about it online where I was able to research the best way to go about it.

    Is very pleasing to see how this easy rules are pure empathy and common sense. This kind of rules could be applied to many other kind of projects (programming, video composing...) without many major tweaks. I have spent hours of my life explaining why numbering with dates should be YYYY-MM-DD when exporting something, for example.
    This is not even about being pro, but about being empathetic with all the people involved in the project.
    Great tips.

    It is not just the engineers who benefit from following these tips. When you keep having to go back and forth with your engineer about which track is which or how they are meant to fit together, it can cause you, the musician, a lot of anxieties and upset, too.
    When things go smooth and by the numbers, everybody benefits. Funny, that.

      +aspie182 Oh yeah, and Glenn, I cannot believe you have not already made a video about this yet: SPARES KITS! Haha. (Seriously, the difference between the kinds of pros I like to listen to and dickheads like hinjurock is that the pros have at least three of everything at shows or when they come into the studios.)

      +aspie182 The difference between amateur studios and professional studios is the creative work flow. Some kids bedroom with a single chair and a rushed attitude is NOT fun, not is it productive or relaxing. Professional studios have extremely kind and experienced engineers along with amazing looking studios for a reason, it's comfortable and gets the best performance out of the artist.

    I have never done #8. Thanks Glenn. The numbering of tracks surprised me. I always figured the Mixer would import to where he wants. This makes tons of sense if I'm sending multiple songs, but I only ever send one song at a time, as I just record for fun. I also never go over 24 tracks...I'm not Beethoven. (theres a new shirt for ya Glenn)
