    You absolutely nailed this. I may have added, don't give final mix or master without being paid in full. It's amazing how fast a band will magically come up with the balance they said you'd need to wait 2 weeks for when you send a mix/master that fades out before the song is finished. Inspiring and relatable video as always.

Pretty sure that's the same idea of an unsolvable paradox.

  • @slowster2945
    @slowster2945 6 ปีที่แล้ว +214

    No, no, no. Mix, or rather reference on EVERYTHING! Studio monitors, headphones, car stereo. Take a mix and run it through everything. Take mental notes, written notes if you're a bass player, and return to your mix station with them in hand (or mind). Remember, you are never "done" with the album, the album is done with you.

    • @SpectreSoundStudios
      @SpectreSoundStudios  6 ปีที่แล้ว +68

      I'm not disagreeing with "referencing" point.. .just don't' "mix" on headphones... But yeah, reference EVERYWHERE you can.

    • @slowster2945
      @slowster2945 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Oh, absolutely! The more sound sources you listen to, the more "Album of the Year's" you're gonna make! (Cross reference that album on everything you got). The actual #1 mistake you can make as a rookie is to mix on ONE SOUND SOURCE, and not cross reference. Cross referencing is the top #1 tip for any recording mixer/producer.

    • @raytorvalds3699
      @raytorvalds3699 6 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      "Take mental notes, written notes if you're a bass player" 😄That was funny.

    • @FacePomagranate
      @FacePomagranate 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This is the only practical solution - Not everybody who listens to your album is going to listen to it in a nicely treated room with good monitors. You could easily say that monitors "lie" about the stereo field because panning that can be really annoying on headphones can sound tolerable with speakers.

    • @slowster2945
      @slowster2945 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is another important tip, especially for metal. Don't pan your guitars (or any single sound source for that matter) 100% right or left. Listen to Machine Head's "The Blackening" with headphones. Take a song like Aesthetics of Hate and listen to the awful way the guitars jump from left to right. It will actually hurt your ears. You need to have at least something in the other ear to keep it sounding natural. After all, you hear an acoustic space with both ears 100% of the time. The stereo field should be treated the same way. (Awesome album, by the way. Just a mixing mistake).

  • @FoxWood
    @FoxWood 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I really appreciate your #1 tip, to have proper acoustic treatment. I always find that having the proper treatment for your mix/tracking room will make your mixes sound much clearer without any hyped or canceled frequencies, same goes for a tracking room.
    Although I know not all of us (mostly us kid engineers like myself) can afford to properly treat a room, so I have my own tip I learned in recording school that will infinitely help your mixes:
    ALWAYS use at LEAST 1 reference track.
    Find a commercial or indie track that you like the mix of, or like the way a particular instrument sounds in it (can be from anywhere you'd like) and use them in your mix to reference your mix against it, that way your mix will be matching up against a mix you KNOW sounds good to you. Doing this has severely improved my mixing, and I find it to b an invaluable tip for any engineer to utilize; those with proper acoustic treatment, and those that can't afford it.
    Of course this technique doesn't replace the fact that your studio SHOULD have proper acoustic treatment, but it does help if you do and INFINITELY helps if you don't.
    - Lauren

    Regarding backing up your data. You should use software that backs up your stuff AUTOMATICALLY. You can't trust yourself to consistently copy files over on a regular basis, too much room for human error and you risk losing recent data. Mac OS has Time Machine, which works great, and there's many free options for Windows. Also, you should definitely consider using a cloud-based backup solution. Saving important data offsite is crucial in case your equipment gets stolen or your house burns down. Gear can be purchased again at the store, your data is irreplaceable. Have a great day folks!

    tbh, i never really understood the idea that you shouldn´t mix on headphones. i started out on AKG k271 studio headphones and got pretty decent results for a beginner. of course switching to monitors did improve my mixes, but the headphones didn´t exactly make my mixes bad. especially for referencing the low end and balancing kick and bass i still grab my headphones, because in a hobby home studio environment you´ll always have some lingering uncertainties down there, even with decent treatment.

      Headphones are more for tracking

    • @michaelwa6274
      @michaelwa6274 6 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      There are several reasons why it is more difficult to mix on headphones. Just to name a few: depending on the cans you probably have less low-end; you can distinguish fewer pan positions (also you locate them in your head instead infront of you); also you usually have a hard time getting reverb right. You should not underestimate that you get tired more quickly with headphones, too. This does not mean you cannot mix on headphones, it means it is more difficult. The most important thing is that you're familiar with your listening environment and how it translates to other setups.

    • @ForTiorIJohnny
      @ForTiorIJohnny 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      well, i do know about the draw backs of headphones. but i think it´s not a bad option for a beginner on a low budget.

    • @trevorwood2118
      @trevorwood2118 6 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      I say always work with both speakers and headphones. They can be misleading sometimes yes, but so can your speakers if your room isn't great. Flat response cans can reveal problems in your mixes you might now hear on speakers. Think about it this way, people are going to listen to your song on headphones so make sure it sounds good on them too. People are also going to listen to your song on shitty speakers, so have some cheap speakers to check your mix on too. AND YOU BETTER MAKE SURE IT SOUNDS GOOD IN MONO! that's an important one. Really the only drawback about headphones to me is that if you're mixing for long periods of time, since they're so close to your ears, your ears get fatigued and begin to adapt and basically compress what you're hearing so you need to take more and longer breaks. But otherwise, you just have to know how to use them. I say check your mixes periodically on everything you've got including apple earbuds, etc. There's no point at all if your mix only sounds good on high quality studio monitors.

    • @JanneOksanen
      @JanneOksanen 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Yea, if the option is between mixing with $200 pair of headphones or $200 pair of monitors and no room treatment I don't see what's so bad about mixing with headphones.

    You forgot to mention the number one mistake, which is irrecoverable and has destroyed more hard won abilities than anything:
    PROTECT YOUR FREAKING HEARING!
    I know, I know, it’s fun to record and listen at 100+ dB, but a recent international study confirmed that over 70% of recording engineers over 30 years old have some degree of permanent hearing loss, 18% of those under 25 years old and just under 40% of professional mixing/mastering engineers over 45 have moderate to severe hearing loss, primarily above 10kHz. That is almost 300% the rate of the rest of the population. Not only does this not bode well for their ability to effectively mix and master, but on their current path, many are on the road to severe hearing loss and substantial deafness by their mid to late 50’s.
    I work in the industry and spec, design and troubleshoot high end studios around the world. I have often shown people the result of this on many popular albums. Sadly, some of the studio professionals cannot hear these major issues (cross-over clicks, severe IM distortion, etc).
    So, if you care about your money makers, mix and master at around 80-90 dB, and take frequent breaks, and wear your headphones to control levels while recording/tracking amplified instruments.
    I can’t tell you how many well trained engineers can no longer hear the difference between MP3 and FLAC, or think it is negligible. Recording for long period without a break seems to increase the likelihood of damage exponentially as you go much past 20-30 minutes without at least a 5 minute break.

    • @SuperballsSupervidsOnYT
      @SuperballsSupervidsOnYT 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To expand on this one should always remember that hearing damage is also cumulative over time, meaning that certain decibel levels will cause permanent damage if you exposed to them over a certain amount of time in a 24 hour period.
      While higher decibel levels can do permanent damage in 15 minutes or less, even seemingly comfortable levels can be damaging over the course of a workday, very important if you work in a shop and are constantly exposed even just to the humming of machinery all day

    I'm a total amateur when it comes to audio so take this with a grain but . . .
    I used to make music as a hobby and had $20 speakers from radio shack and had the same problem where things sounded different everywhere. I uses to use apple earbuds to mix with once I realized I couldn't hear everything through the speakers. I did this on a laptop so I used to re-mix everything on as many different speakers, really trying to remember what I was gaining and losing each time, but always referencing that back to my headphones/ apple ear pods.
    I totally understand why a professional would say that you shouldn't go off headphones. They lie. But From my own personal experience, I developed an ear for mine and learned what they did to lie to me. I could make a notch filter on a parametric EQ to single stuff out and then kind of guess what it "really" sounded like. Most people aren't going to understand this until they have gone through the same process as me which would usually take place in the form of just using a proper set up from the beginning.
    I just feel the need to say this because sometimes, people ask why they can't do something instead of how can I do something. I know you are saying what youre saying with the best intentions but I know that when I started getting into this, I would have heard that, listened to my speakers and thought "there's simply no way"
    Full disclaimer here, it took almost 2 years of remixing one song and making other songs to finally develop this skill and be able to somewhat reliably make something that sounds similar between monitors.

    • @brianjohnson9802
      @brianjohnson9802 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    On the topic of backups, I'd recommend setting a system for online backups. Splice automatically backs up projects if you subscribe to their service. You can also use Google drive and save your projects in that folder and Google will handle the rest. Backing up to USB drives is great for fast recovery, but in the event of a natural disaster you can still loose everything.

    • @terrydoylemusic
      @terrydoylemusic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +1 on this. Unless you take the usb drives out of state ... you are exposed. Online(remote) backups(resilience and hopefully never used) plus local (easy to get to if you have a technical issue but no help if the studio floods!) I use Backblaze for remote and time machine for local. I sleep like a baby :-)

      +Zatore mixing on headphones is like cupping the Mic. Denial ain't gonna change physics

    • @Zatore_
      @Zatore_ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You are correct, denial won't change physics. However, cupping the mic deliberately limits what the mic pics up, the exact opposite of what headphones do. Headphones provide a greater degree of accuracy and help you hear the entire frequency range (Even into subsonic). I've found this to be amazingly helpful especially when trying to mix the low end of my tracks. Being able to hear exactly what is going on in the low end is invaluable.

    • @rumbachumba330

      Agree with you, Mixing on headphones is much better than mixing in room poorly acoustically treated. It will lie to you and make you hear things that aren't there. Its more tiring for your ears but its not the worst idea.

    • @banigrisson
      @banigrisson 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's all about knowing HOW your headphones lie. If they have crazy top end... than remember to not low pass everything when you are mixing. Or put a low shelf on your master buss and take it off for the final render/export/bounce. If they have too little midrange... remember to *not* boost 1k on everything. Or put a 1k boost on the master buss and take it off for the final render/export/bounce. And so on... Great engineers mix in headphones, it's a matter of perception.

    • @flacidhouse350
      @flacidhouse350 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Headphones do not provide a greater degree of accuracy. They saturate the sound. Sound waves behave totally differently trapped in a confined space with your ear than they do running around the room.
      And if you are doing anything in stereo headphones are right out. You think letting sound waves bounce all over the room changes the sound just wait until they start hitting different sound waves from a different source. You could have phasing taking out vast frequencies on speakers and never know about it with headphones.

      Kristian Smith for necro guitar sound I would recommend: bad amps (those bands did their first records with small practice amps I think), bad mics, distortion pedals.
      If you want to do it with software: skip the cab simulation. Drum: lots of room sound. bass: none or with lots of that aggressive metallic sound or with distortion.

    • @mitchell2719

      If you only have 2 drives, yes that's what you should do. If you're a professional and you want to keep an archive, you should use a NAS with ZFS and ECC RAM. It's more expensive, but your work will be safe.

    I always mixed on headphones for almost 10 years. Then I check the mix on monitors and fix only minor things. You should mix on what you know best, period. Be it headphones or monitors.

      You just have to be aware of the difference headphones make. The stereo field is exaggerated, reverb is more noticeable, etc. Great reference mixes and lots of experience will go a long way.

    I have to disagree with you on the "Headphones lie" thing. Open back Sennheiser HD6 headphones have given me the flattest response I have ever heard and what I do on these has managed to sound great on any speaker setup. You just have to remember to turn the volume down every once in a while and also take breaks. Also a good trick for apartment or dorm room recording on a budget. Can't afford a pair of $500 monitors and another couple hundred in acoustic treatment? Headphones.

    • @mal2ksc
      @mal2ksc 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a pair of Tannoy SRM-12B for monitors and I _still_ do most of the detail work with headphones.

    • @MichaelHattem
      @MichaelHattem 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the no headphones advice is a remnant from an earlier time when people primarily listened to music through speakers. However, music is now primarily consumed through headphones. That doesn’t necessarily mean you should mix with only headphones but it’s not as problematic anymore as it was years ago. In my own experience, if you have a bad or untreated room AND you know your headphones REALLY well, they can be a better primary (though not sole) option.

    Glenn, my advice at getting back your weight in your 20's. When, you're making your youtube content and also projects done in your studio.
    While taking breaks & instead of driving to the nearest corner store to buy soda pop etc. You should walk there instead.

    • @icenic_wolf

      It's way easier to change your diet to something like reddit.com/r/keto/ than it is to lose weight after your 20s by exercising. Wish I could have told myself that 10 years ago.

    • @zhiracs
      @zhiracs 6 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      EQing and mixing that sounds right on headphones won't sound right outside of them. Playing your song through a car stereo is a good, cheap way to get an idea of how the mix REALLY sounds.

    • @DiminishingAugmentation
      @DiminishingAugmentation 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      They saturate the tone. A shitty kick drum will sound great on headphones, but nowhere else.

    • @JuveriSetila
      @JuveriSetila 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Well why headphones sound different? If you have like 1000$ fucking super ultra great studio headphones, why will they sound different than great monitors in great room? What actually makes the difference?

    • @marvinroggon3168
      @marvinroggon3168 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You want a really neutral sound listening to while mixing. Studio Monitors do it the best way. GOOD Studio headphones are ok to mix while traveling or not being in the studio. It still won't be accurate enough and you need to work on the mix on a pair of studio monitors later anyways. As Glenn said, a studio setup with acoustic treatment is gold and every audio engineer will agree with it, really.

  • @martya7344

    I know this is an old video but one part about it bothered me. It was when you said that if a guitar player wanted to record with a cheap guitar with old strings etc. you should put your foot down and make him use a studio guitar. I disagree entirely. This is an arrogant and unprofessional attitude. As an engineer, it is your job to record the client in a way that accurately reflects what they want. You are not the guitar player in the band, and it is not your job to decide how the guitar should sound. Your job is to help the guitar player get the sound that they want onto the recording. I have been in a similar situation once or twice myself, and my solution was to record a take or two with his guitar but insist that he also use a studio one, even if for a rough take. Afterwards we would listen to a rough playback, in which the band discussed the sound. Both times the studio guitar was ultimately decided on, but it wasn't ever thought of as a confrentation because the guitar player and, ultimately, the band, had a choice between the two. With this strategy, the worst case scenario is that they maybe spend a little extra time in the studio, which shouldn't be a problem if everyone is happy and you're not charging a flat fee ;)

    For backups, is usually better to use the 321 principle, where you have 3 backups on 2 different types of media and 1 of those is an off-site backup. That way, you can cover for things like theft, media degradation, etc.
