My summer garden went in so late that it is naturally transitioning into my fall garden. It's only two tomatoes plants and two bell pepper plants, but my first ever garden.
In case anyone wants inspiration: I'm having "pie pockets" for dinner! It's like homemade hot pockets, but I fill the pie crust with lentils, caramelized onions, and chevre goat cheese. Other times I fill with chicken pot pie filling. I usually make about 2 dozen at a time, egg wash and salt/pepper the crust, bake them, and store in the freezer
Inspiration listening to others. Yes, it's why God wants us to be in fellowship with others. I'm an introvert, and I'm working on it. 💜 Those raised beds are gorgeous!
Absolutely true! I'm an introvert as well, but when I do get with others I get inspired. And a big yes on the beds! The clear coat really made the wood pop!
When ever my dad has some leftover coffee in the coffee pot he pours it in an ice cube tray and freezes it. Then he puts them in a ziplock bag and saves them for when he wants iced coffee and uses them for the ice in his iced coffee
Your motto of changing your waiting room into a classroom has changed my life! My *ideal* garden didn’t work out this year so, I put a couple of different plants in containers and I just now harvested my first Gypsy pepper, healthy tomato and two green bell peppers! ❤️
I know just how you feel, I was expecting more in my second year, but got less. The weather’s not been on my side… haven’t given up, just looking at things from a learning perspective and ploughing on.
My neighbors always laugh at me about my garden. I'm usually the first one to plant and the last one to give up. They tell me I play roulette with God. I let them know I'm always happy to play the "will there be frost" game. :) You inspire me, Jess!
I laughed and wanted to give you a big hug when you looked at that new coop and said you couldn't wait to decorate it for Christmas. I love the way you think.
My grandfather taught me to use mirrors placed in the high tunnels to help heat them through the winter and using heated rocks placed in the dirt around most venerable plants. It works. We had a dedicated raised bed going down the center that we placed the hot rocks every 2 -3 feet all the way down it. Just don't place them to close to your plants.
A few vlogs ago you encouraged us not to give up in the middle of July on our gardens. I was so ready to be done. Fast forward to the beginning of August, peas, cukes and marigolds are planted. I'm getting the weeding caught up and am so excited where my gardens are going. Cherry tomatoes bless us daily, peppers and beans, every couple of days. We are experiencing a very dry upper 80-90s summer. Still feeling very blessed. Thanks for continuing to encourage us.
We have started doing affirmation circles with the kids & i love it. The youngest doesn’t quite get it & usually just says everyone is the best lol but the inspiration was highly appreciated.
The soil bag video is where I “met” you, Jess! I’ve watched all your videos since. And grown a ton of leafy greens through my New England winters thanks to the inspiration from that video!
Trying to plan for a fall garden here in Florida zone 9a. The summer garden was minimally successful. Lots of pests to deal with. I checked and there's still 126 days until a possible frost. Next year's summer garden will be different from what I have learned this year. Thank you for encouraging all of us. ❤️🌻❤️
I'm really thinking 2023 is go-time for my coop finally. Even if I know I am moving within the next couple years, I have learned from you to be a steward. Even if it's a tiny little quarter acre corner suburban property, someone will come and continue to love it just like I do!! 😁
The one thing that is forgotten when growing is that the further away from the equator during your winter, the fewer daylight hours are available, as well as the sun is at an angle that does not allow for vigorous growth. It isn't just temperatures that need to be accommodated.
Jess, if I could wake up and look like you do when you wake up….I’d be a happy girl! I wake up and look like a Sasquatch 😂😂. The raised beds look great, early morning on the farm….Heaven!
While harvesting this morning I found lots of tomatoes with ‘issues’ that weren’t worth my time to finish growing or take inside to eat. It was so satisfying to toss them to my chickens that free range, but the younger flock that’s locked up didn’t know what to do with the stale loaf of bread I tossed them. There’s no waste on our homestead!
I hear you on the "I have a lot less time than ideas" thing, because my hubby tells me that I do that. I think being a creative person has a lot to do with that for me. You guy's amaze me with how quickly your becoming established at your new homestead!
Speaking of sharing new ideas, I was gifted a couple of pounds of Honduran coffee a few months ago and have been cold-brewing ever since. The coffee was so good it didn't even need sugar which has been a really healthy and unexpected gift. 🔥🔥🔥
Oh Jessica, you make my heart beat green!!! Thanks for your transparency and live for us all!! Yes, Christmas lights on your new chicken coop-love it!!
Thanks to Luke at Migardener, I realized that I could still grow some things later in the year. Being in the north, I thought one go of it and done. This year I have tomatoes and peppers that I started in June that are doing really well and now I have peas, lettuce etc. for the fall also. I appreciate all the information I learn from you.
The raised beds are stunningly beautiful! This video made me pull out seeds for sugar snap and snow peas, lettuces, beet, carrots. Your coffee shop sounds like a grand addition to your other shops, a fulfillment of dreams well planned!
I’ve been making ‘your fancy coffee’ for some time too! For me instead of maple syrup I use molasses since it’s more readily available where I’m at and I love it 😍
Love, love, your vision and how it is becoming a reality. I'm starting to save to buy a 10 acre lot. I'm 64 female and homesteading is what I will doing 8n my retirement. Love y'all form Colorado soon to be back in the south.
Our tiny local hospital has an out-of-control tomato plant growing out of a soil bag in a flower bed near the ambulance entrance. I thought of you when I saw it. 🥰🍅
How awesome is that! That has to be an encouragement to anyone coming and going through there! It speaks life and hope when the world seems so upside down right now. No, normal isn't coming back... Jesus is. Thank you for the ray of sunshine in such a negative world! Blessings on your day Kiddo!🌻🐛🌼
@@marking-time-gardens Thank you. My 92 yo step dad is in there (on his way to a nursing home) and it just went into covid lock down because a patient has covid. No visitors for 5 days. 😥
Not going to lie, the first thing I did to our big sweet coop when I got it home was to hook up some solar powered fairy lights onto it. They’re currently purple, but the plan is to decorate for Christmas specifically when the time comes!
OMG- I can relate to the move excuse ( we moved abt the same time you did) and just commented to my man that I have started feeling the need to get rid of all the boxes and extra stuff. Thank you for being so “REAL” talking about the failures and showing the mess- it speaks to your honesty, how sometimes it gets messy but you keep going. It definitely is encouraging to know that I am not the only one that has these things happen to them (sometimes I just need a reminder that I am not the only one). Thank you!!
The video of growing greens is how I found your channel! I’ve leaned so much from your content since then. Thank you for sharing your love for the garden and homesteading!
If your freeze comes before you get ripe tomatoes, you could pull them green and prep some fried green tomatoes for the freezer, and the Ball recipe for green tomato salsa (which I make without peeling according to the Canadian/Bernardin directions so it's not such a pain to prep), makes an EXCELLENT green enchilada sauce. Just blend the contents of the jar when you're ready to use it. I've also used that sauce to top a smoky breakfast/brunch hash.
It does take a while to really settle in and learn the flow of a place! Also, not weird wanting to decorate those unexpected little places. I decorate my house plants! Nothing cuter than a little String of Pearl's in a cauldron! Hahaha.
Inspired me to plant a fall garden. I haven't had the energy or time to really care for my summer garden and just getting cucumbers. Now I've got some things behind me and want to focus on a fall garden. Thank you for your inspiration.
The raised beds are so beautiful! So nice that you will have more room to grow to catch up from the soil setbacks. Good luck to Noah on his roasting adventure! Looking forward to the coffee! ☕
I just planted some yesterday, my mother always said we were zone 5, if you look at the map we should be 6 but I think 5 is more accurate with the cold and weather we get off the great lakes. Eggplant, 'it's not for me', I love that phrase you are teaching your kids and I'm going to teach my grandson!
My daughter and I pulled our first carrots and a tomato plant today and planted more carrots and green beans. I've never done that before but wanted to try and see what we'll get. Thanks for the inspiration.
The fact that life doesn't always go according to our plans is what make our lives interesting. The bad or hard things makes us stronger and the good things bring us so much joy. Have a dream, make a plan, but leave moments open to all of the surprises life brings you! God Bless y'all and keep growing!

It’s the last of the clean out left for me to do. Your green house will get organized in due time. Your a young Momma and being Momma comes first. One thing now for me and it’s because I’m alone now, is that I love being Blessed by you. Thank you Jess I Bless you 🙏🏻💜💔🤓
*cries in 73 days of frost free growing annually* but to be in a place with enough time for a fall garden is such a blessing and I live vicariously through you and Jill every fall!
Jess raw first thing in the morning 🌄 Love it!! Raised beds look fantastic!! Jackson driving himself to football practice now there's a milestone.. If you can more information on dealing with pests and pros and cons. I know you've done it but there are still many people with "must kill everything" reactions .
I'm in Texas zone 9. We grow a porch tomato during winter. We put acrilic panels up and enjoy our wood stove on our back porch. Tomato plant is on a plant stand that can be rolled around to get some sunshine. It sure is nice to have a fresh tomato during the winter. Ok our winter is like 3-5 days....
Also suffering from too many ideas for my available time and impatience to get the vision of my garden that is in my head out into reality. Blessed to have those as problems! Love early morning Jess and seeing your progress in the garden. Hope Mom and kid time was for cuddles and snuggles not problems and issues.
Nothing wrong with getting all those offspring of yours to help with the garden trailer/greenhouse project. You could even pay them a little. Let them choose the currency. It doesn't have to be money. I love that you let us join your early morning. Yawns and all. And HEY, if Snoopy can decorate his dog house, then you certainly can decorate your chicken house!!! It could be a family event and we could join in, haha! 😉
"I have more ideas than time.." 😂 I can relate to that! Tho I have more ideas/dreams/plans than time & ENERGY. I can't believe how much you have accomplished in just a year on your new property. I envy your youth and stamina! 🥰 Thanks for always being upbeat, cheerful and optimistic. You are a good encouragement to many.
About the distance to get over ripe fruit and veg to your chickens from your garden; I'd say give that problem to your children. The boys would have a ball designing and building (and using!) your new supersonic rotten fruit catapult launcher. Who knows, if any of them show an interest in the fine points of rocketry, you might be able to feed chickens for MILES around! Lol
Slowly we going into spring. I pulled off some suckers from the tomatoes which they gave me a few through our winter (coldest night was about 3C° during the day about 12C°). Now I am waiting for the roots than starting my summer garden. My capsicums gave me fruit all winter. Slowly the garden waking up. So had enough of winter. Hardly can wait to start planting, thanks to Jess encouragement. My strawberries just started to take off. Yippie. You know spring is near when the Cinnamon bush flowering. It is so beautiful makes my heart burst of happiness.
I never had been an iced coffee fan. Was a straight up regular hot coffee with milk kind of person, but I tried the brown sugar iced coffee you made on a hot morning where I live and enjoyed it so much. Will have it from time to time for a change in my morning routine. Thanks for the suggestion. ❤️
You have such a gorgeous greenhouse! One way to heat it in the winter, without taking up much space would be a tiny woodstove. I think they're actually made for boats and RVs but would work just fine in a greenhouse too!
I have never planted a fall garden but I’m going to try this year because the horrible heat was too much for my tomato plants. I’m rooting a few cuttings. Right now it’s still 100 degrees outside, but being in zone 9, I know I have a little time. I just got some more types of lettuce and spinach but it will be awhile before I can plant them. I’m very excited because my oldest daughter bought me a GreenStalk. I’ve wanted one for awhile. So I can’t wait to get some goodies growing in there. Thank you Jess for continuing to inspire and encourage me. Sometimes my transplants look so sad but I remember you saying, “Plant it. If it wants to grow, it will. If you don’t try, it’s a sure thing you won’t have any harvest.” Always give it a try.❤️🌻
I have only found you in recent months but an so enjoying following your journey. As a family we longterm rented a feild nearby and popped a polytunnel up in March this year. We have eaten so much produce already and are already on planted our third batches of some things. We have learnt alot, made lots of mistakes and most of all had lots of fresh air and fun. I am loving all the tips i am learning on your videos. Thankyou to you and your team, your place is awesome, and im very grateful for what you do. x
I'm so so so thankful my greenhouse is not the only hot mess greenhouse in the land. Organization is seriously needed as soon as the summer heat takes a break.
I love that you show your hot mess in the greenhouse! I am waiting for the prices of garden sheds to come down. Maybe this winter, because I have ton of garden supplies that is making my garage a "hot mess!"
I thought at first it was raining ( with the fan noise in the greenhouse). You definitely need a hammock in the greenhouse for rainy days! Oh, heaven!!
Wow!! That’s the same coop I built for my ladies :) You’ll love it..super easy to clean and egg harvest! And not weird…i plan to decorate mine for Christmas and it currently has garden lights on it 🥰
I’ve been following along with your book, & we have learned so much! This was our first year gardening ever, and boy did we learn a lot! My sons are small & fell IN LOVE with gardening. I am so exited to hopefully be able to harvest this fall. Thank you Jess for the inspiration, & the attitude to not give up but keep going. Everything we do is one step closer. Our garden took a eating due to the heat, but we’ve leaned so many lessons for next year. Bless you 💕
Coriander!!!!! Loads of it. Then freeze dry (if you have one. I don’t 🥲). If I could freeze dry anything, it would be green onions and cilantro (spring onions/coriander in UK). Maybe fresh mint and parsley, too.
Being diabetic, sugars are out..so I use Monk fruit powder,no after taste, very sweet,no calories. Plus my husband froze coffee in icecubes so my ice doesn't dilute my coffee as it melts
I started my tomato seedlings that were my mothers packets were sealed from back in 1989 …when I planted the tomato plants, I did your egg in the hole as I learned from you, videos in Arkansas .. kept plants trimmed also as you taught me The heat here in SW Missouri as all through the nation is horrible.. finally we are in August, my tomato plants are in full blooms, plants are huge and beautiful Praying for a bountiful harvest Also I had too place netting over my plants as I found 4 huge horn worms I have so many questions about other vegetation we lost in our gardens from pestilence 😭 But thank you
Zone 5 I call it winter garden even with negative 15 degrees Celsius we, had kale and lettuc e with no cover. Grows slow but grows. Over wintering like onions is a thing here and yes tatsoy and other greens grow wellunder a tote
Hi Jess had a tray of Brassicas sitting outside to catch a few rays and a wind came up a blew them over mixing them up! Lol! Amazing how much cabbage, Bokeh Choy as well as a few others are all look the same! Oh well at least I was able to save them! I sure hope they do better than my Spring Brassicas which mostly bolted except for the few I planted a bit later which are edible but not very attractive! I count it all as as a learning experience! 😝🧐🤪😁
I'm trusting God for a good fall garden. Our garden has been mostly big sadness this year. It's just SO hot ( and continuous)and only a tiny bit of rain. (Like a half inch all summer since late May) I've only been able to can potatoes so far. We need to get started on a fall garden and I'm going to lay hands on it and anoint it. We usually have enough produce to share with family friends and neighbors, but not so far. That alone makes me sad.
I’m zone 4b. Ain’t nothing surviving our winters unless you have a heated greenhouse. I have a few things in now, cucumbers, sweet baby watermelons, beans etc.., but, Next year will be better. Right now, I am already beginning to think of prep for next year. Have to start the divisions and prepare places to put them 😜
1 minute in and I cracked up, sis. "To deep of a thought before coffee," and then a yawn. Yes, friend, those pre-coffee deep thoughts are super tiring. Caution. Lol
I'm teaching people about fall gardening and blowing minds with it! People don't think we can do more than one season of gardening here in Michigan and I'm showing people that's a whole lot of nope. Just gotta know the what, when and where. Girl....my gardening storage bench and shed are a mess. Glad to see we're in cahoots. LOL. Also, I snagged my marigolds the same way earlier in the season from Lowes. Half dead and on clearance....they're now bigger than the greenhouse ones!!!
I think watching these plants grow is going to be incredibly gratifying. I think it will show all of us how being rooted in the soil is so much better than being isolated. I can't wait to see them prosper and fruit. Maybe the best tomatoes of the season Jess. :^)
@@RootsandRefugeFarm I just keep wanting to see your tomato dreams fulfilled for this new land. Oh! and get that trailer and pull out some of the garden treasures. Your garden decor misses you.

Just LOVE your honesty. Gardening can be sooo overwhelming at times. Thanks Jess
my summer garden was terrible, nothing produced. so now my fall garden is now my summer garden. tomatoes, beans, cucumber, and squash.
You can just tell that boy/man’s heart is GOOD 😊
About the distance to get over ripe fruit and veg to your chickens from your garden; I'd say give that problem to your children.
I really enjoy just hanging out on your channel after work. Thank you for sharing all your information.
Yay for tomatoes 2.0! I’m one of those people that saw the salad greens in a tote video and never left.
Thankyou to you and your team, your place is awesome, and im very grateful for what you do. x
Thanks for the booster shot for round two…the Fall!
BTW…your raised beds are gorgeous 😍
And also God bless you don't let anybody get in your way
Lol yes, I'm watching this just before supper and 🥱, definitely contagious lol
Make 2 Servings, refrigerate one for tomorrow, cold, undiluted ice coffee done right, imo. Ty4 letting me share - a New Yorker
I'm so so so thankful my greenhouse is not the only hot mess greenhouse in the land. Organization is seriously needed as soon as the summer heat takes a break.
A little inspiration saves alot of perspiration😁
Thanks darling😉
I make coffee ice cubes with any leftover brewed coffee then use them in iced coffee. *cheers!*
Wow! There is so much going on, Jess your a great leader and visionary 😁
Bless you!🤗💗🤗
I started my tomato seedlings that were my mothers packets were sealed from back in 1989 …when I planted the tomato plants, I did your egg in the hole as I learned from you, videos in Arkansas .. kept plants trimmed also as you taught me
The heat here in SW Missouri as all through the nation is horrible.. finally we are in August, my tomato plants are in full blooms, plants are huge and beautiful
Praying for a bountiful harvest
Also I had too place netting over my plants as I found 4 huge horn worms
I have so many questions about other vegetation we lost in our gardens from pestilence 😭
But thank you
Thank you so much for showing your hot mess. You make me feel so much better about my hot mess! Lol
I am so happy for you. Many blessings your way.
Those raised beds are Beautiful.. Makes me wish I was there digging in the dirt with you. LOL
I built that very same coop for my chickens!! Love it
I’m zone 4b. Ain’t nothing surviving our winters unless you have a heated greenhouse.
I have a few things in now, cucumbers, sweet baby watermelons, beans etc.., but, Next year will be better.
Right now, I am already beginning to think of prep for next year. Have to start the divisions and prepare places to put them 😜
Coffee roasting too?!? How exciting!!! Congrats!
What a sweet and true word!
@@RootsandRefugeFarm I just keep wanting to see your tomato dreams fulfilled for this new land. Oh! and get that trailer and pull out some of the garden treasures. Your garden decor misses you.
I love the new raised beds. Reminds me of Arkansas but newer.....he he he. God bless your beautiful homestead.
Lol before I started the video I was like I need a cup of coffee and sit back to watch. I always want a cup of coffee while watching your videos. I wonder why, 😆 🤣
