- A review of the PSX, or Playstation X. Released only in Japan in 2003 by Sony, comes this Playstation 2, DVR combo. The first Console to have the XMB "XrossMediaBar" menu, we take a quick look at the console and most of it's features.

The reason this console failed is because it was way ahead of its time.
It's too expensive that's why it failed.
Why pay 60,000 or 100,000 yen for DVR with PS2 pasted on when you can pay 40,000 yen for a PS2.
I meant both PSX and PS2 launch prices not used.

There's no overheat issues on these.
It's either the laser or the HDD going bad which kill these "bad boys".
These ones are very hard to find, particurly because a lot of sellers think the first version of the ps1 is called a psx...
Because that was the code name originally given to the PS1 during development

Hello there :-), i know this video is old but i would just like to say thank you for taking the time to making this and show it off :-), i had no idea at all that this console existed and like you say it's a very nice looking piece of kit especially in the glacier white and the length of that cable on the pad is crazy lol. So yeah just saying thanx for showing it to me and i bet it's one of your favorite gem's amongst your console collection. Take it easy m8 :-).
Thank you for the comment. It is one of my favorite consoles in my collection. My wife and child surprised me with it for father's day, so it has a bit more meaning because of that as well.

Sony probably didn't market it well alongside horribly high price. This clearly was what Xbox One became. Only this was released in Japan and in 2003. That means it's safe to assume this was being worked on since 2000-2001 or so. So advanced for its time. Add PSN to this and it's a PlayStation version prototype of the Xbone.
Nah,i would say if they lowered the price to $249 and if PSN was around at that time and was free(like the PS3),Sony would have made more money than they have in the past
The only way you can play games of all regions is to softmod the PSX via FreeMCBoot.
LOVE the menu but I think the ps2 intro is cooler
Imagine if sony released a "ps4x", which would be similar to the psx, except HD with a much larger HDD and ps4 game capability. I know it will never happen but it's a neat thought. In fact the only selling feature of the xbox one to me is the DVR functionality.

@@neilland8209 It's actually the other way around, they used a simplified version of the XMB on some Sony Ericsson phones.
Hey can it play DVD's from here in america just fine? Or is there some sort of lock on them too? Sorry I'm not to good at this region stuff. I'm planning on getting one soon but I'd like to at least know if I can use it as a DVD player
I'm very close to giving in and picking one up, I'm an avid collector.
What about region locks and backups? Can it play them at all? The overheating also seems to be a concern, so i guess i would only play it for real on a pretty cool room, lol.
The system is region locked to Japan. I have not tried anything to get around that. I have played mine for a few hours here and there, and it's fine for that. So maybe short gaming runs are ok.
Hey I have recently got a psx. I am new to these sort of consoles. Do i just use the AV cables or do I need something eles? it turns on but I just am unsure on the video side of it. Thank you for the great video.
I just use the AV cables. I believe there is an in and out, so just make sure it's in the right ones and should be good to go.

@@JeffPerson I don't know your setup, so that makes it a bit tricky. I'm sure you tried a few common things like, trying other a/v cables, just in case the ones you have are bad. Try a different t.v if you have one. Make sure the t.v is set to the right input on your t.v. That's just a quick few things to try and check. Let me know how you get along.
You can know hack this unit my using a modded var. of FMCB, you need a other PS2 to setup the files. You can also mod the XMB to English & add PSone/PS2 games to the HDD from any region. (Can be a little hard to setup)

What was the real price of the psx has it release in japan please [EURO]
The price was 79,800 yen when released in 2003. So i guess that would be about 645.2322 Euro.
Or US$793, for any American viewers.

I can't see why that console should've failed other than the overheating and the price tag... if Sony improved the cooling and were able to lower the price... it would probably have sold like a DreamCast...

I think that cause some versions of the FreeMcBoot Softmod for PS2 Can work on PSX DVR And they can allow Imports So I guess cause they work for this it might be a way for region free?

Damn, this system looks sexy and better than the PS3/4. I think Sony should've done the PS4 design like this one but with the same color as the PS1. And maybe matte with the PSX logo colored.

if this was E3 2013 I'd agree, but not now. They've really put a focus on games than they have the other features recently, and hardly ever try to push the TV/app/multimedia capabilities on its users compared to back then.

They only released these in Japan. That is where i picked mine up. Just do a search online, maybe you can track one down. Ebay maybe?

i was about to go crazy that i thot there was going to be a new console when im about to get a PS4 on christmas the same thing happened when i got my Xbox 360 but since its just a DVR/PS2 its ok

it's Benson the rarest console you probably own is a PS3. This console is so rare and very desirable for many people so to see it being scratched, etc. is not nice to watch

they should have had a friggin US release.. think of the modding capabilities this thing could have spawned... lol i mean really, i feel like it may have been easier to actually mod and mess with the firmware than modding a ps2. and the added benefit of it feeling like a ps3 xmb is fantastic. id buy a couple if they were released in US with full US language support

You will need the network access disc. With that you can browse the internet, but some web sites do not work.
If I buy one that only powers on can I still soft mod it with free mcboot?
If it powers on, i believe you can use mcboot with the PSX.

MEGA-BLAST!!! The PS2 can do that. The original PSX system was a joint experiment that Sony and Nintendo were going to make but Nintendo ended up making Sony stop the project. The original came out in December 3, 1994 only in Japan. They released the PlayStation One in America and Europe in September 1995.

Why is it like a PS TV? A PS TV uses a Dualshock 3 or 4. Also it plays vita and old PlayStation classics.

I just got mine and love it. Can you run another console into it through analog like the old Sega Master system and then record your game footage on the hard drive? I would think you would be able too.... Has anyone tried this?

@@AndroidAssets 2 minutes would be a bit much. I was just kidding about that. This intro was when i started TH-cam and and shot a lot of video for my intro and then i tried to use it. It was pointed out many times it was long, so after that i did shorten it up a good bit. Newer videos have a way shorter intro.

My wife surprised me with as a gift. Not sure what she paid, but happy to have it.
I'm now bidding for one of these on Yahoo auction now currently at 3,900 yen bid amount.
Bundled with many goodies other than the console itself like Shmup PS1 game,manuals,set top box,two extra AV cables and its remote control,normal dualshock 2,PSX remote control and a PS1 memory card.
It's a working model with with confirmed test on DVD,CD games and DVD recording,HDD have to be format but it still work.

It's the more expensive DESR-7000 model with 250 GB HDD.
I intended to use this only as a video recorder,I'll record some Laserdisc on this since the my laptop just wasn't fast enough to get a good recording out of it.
