Rice Rubber Recipe

  • The Rice Rubber Recipes are for creating super flexible decorations that stay flexible for a very long time! Rice Rubber does not take veining or sculpting very well and will not pick up fine details - so if you plan on making flowers with it, please keep that in mind. If you need to make flexible flowers with fine veining detail, please see the link for Rice Clay below :)
This recipe will stay flexible for a long time. The length of time all depends on your climate. I made a flexible pine branch using this recipe and the pine needles were still somewhat flexible 5 months later!

Special note: This dough is firm and very difficult to knead. You will need to have a lot of strength in your arms and hands to successfully knead this dough.

Wow so happy I stumbled across this recipe as flexible paste is not available in my country so this will definitely help. Just a few questions please: Between the Rice Rubber and Rice Clay which one takes colour better and when does one colour either paste? Would you colour after done or add colour when adding the ingredients together in the beginning? Will gel colours work? Thank you again for sharing your recipes and knowledge :)

Oh noo, they wouldn't taste good at all ;). But the plus side to using these is that they can be kept around for a very long time! If you make a beautiful flower arrangement for a wedding cake and the bride wanted to keep the flowers, they could be easily saved as a keepsake without worrying about them melting from heat or humidity. They will just need to be kept out of the sun... I have found that the sun fades petal dusts... I have my yellow and pink rose I made in the tutorial sitting in my kitchen window and it has faded to a very light pastel colored rose ;). But if you're looking for flower recipes that taste good... I have a candy clay flower tutorial, and there is also a recipe called Mexican Paste that has a lot of sugar in the recipe. I have not tried that recipe yet, but I have seen artists make some beautiful flowers with it! I think they dried hard and wouldn't be pleasant to eat, but at least they will be sweet! :)

I tried this recipe twice. Used a digital scale to weigh flours. It came out very, very runny both times. We have central air so the humidity level in the house is average. Not sure what happened. Followed the recipe exactly and my scale is accurate.

I didn't understand between flex rice clay & flex rice rubber recipe difference between is corn syrup but result look like same.... is this replacement of fondant those who don't like sugar paste ..??

These are great questions! Yes, they do look very similar, but the Rice Clay is a little whiter in appearance and is also not as transparent as the Rice Rubber when rolled thin. The Rice Clay recipe was specifically designed for flowers and it takes veining and textures really well! The Rice Rubber does not take texture very well and the dough springs back when pressed. But since all of the flours are cooked together in the Rice Rubber recipe, every bit of it becomes infused with glycerin and therefore it is more flexible (like rubber) and and stays softer much longer than the Rice Clay recipe. And these recipes do not taste good and would not work well as a replacement for fondant.

@@howtocakethat see basically people throwing fondant /gum paste as well due to over sugar.... so I don't mind of taste I believe in health where I can see rice clay / rice rubber has no sugar no chemicals infact I would like to try rice clay by just removing corn syrup as in my town I am not getting.... bean paste ( Mexican paste) , or sugar paste/gum paste every thing has over sugar, tylose, corn syrup.....where as rice clay or rubber is mostly only flours... and above all are bit time consuming then why not rice.... I am working & trying with out sugar flexible paste ..... where I am not getting stretch part.... I am questioning all so that I can mix match n make with out sugar with out chemicals..... hope this work...

@@JessicaUk Oh I think that is wonderful that you are looking for a healthier alternative with less or no sugar! These rice clay recipes do set firm and would be too chewy and too hard to eat if used to cover a cake. But there are some great looking rice dough recipes used for cooking that I have seen on TH-cam, and I wonder if any of them could work to cover a cake! I actually tried using my bean paste recipe once to cover a cake because I really liked the taste of it and I liked how easy it was to smooth and hide seams, but my bean paste recipe shrinks back a little as it dries and it cracked over the cake as it sat in the refrigerator overnight. I wonder if I could change the recipe a bit to stop it from shrinking back... hmmm... that might be something I could experiment with later :)

Hey what’s the difference between this and the rice clay for flexible recipe?

    • @howtocakethat

Hi Swati! That's a really good question! The Rice Clay recipe was specifically designed for flowers. It has a whiter appearance, and it takes veining and textures really well! The Rice Rubber recipe is more off-white in appearance and it also is more transparent when rolled thin. It also does not take texture very well and the dough springs back when pressed. But since all of the flours are cooked together in this recipe, every bit of it becomes infused with glycerin and therefore it is more flexible (like rubber) and and stays softer much longer than the Rice Clay recipe.

How To CAKE That thanks for the elaborated reply..that means that recipe is good for flower making and this one is good for other figures making right? As in substitute of fondant

@@swatiratnani7838 You are very welcome! Yes, the Rice Clay is good for flowers (flowers can be made using the Rice Rubber recipe as well, they just won't have a lot of detail if using silicone veiners - I will be making a tutorial soon on how to make a flower with the Rice Rubber). No, the Rice Rubber would not work well for sculpting. The dough springs back a bit if you try to shape texture or details into it. I have not yet tried using the Rice Clay for sculpting, but when I get around to it I will be sure to share a video if it works well!
