Aw man, yes I love that solo too and even wrote a similar track for this episode but it already became so long I didn't included it.... But yes a brilliant piece of work... Always loved that one too. Thanks for watching 👍
His playing is obviously incredible, and his guitar design ideas in conjunction with Ibanez have changed everything we know about the instrument. We are so lucky to have him.
I love these Guitar Gods videos, and the best part of them is sharing your musical journey with us through discovering and listening to other artists. I remember buying the G3 DVD in Denver and being floored by Vai as well, that was my introduction to Vai. Cheers for the wonderful content Alex!
You should give Thomas McRocklin a listen. He played a young Steve Vai in the Audience is Listening video. Well he still plays and has become an incredible guitarist.

So... I came here for the notion that there were gonna be 20 minutes of some great Steve Vai licks. I was incorrect. What I got instead was ten times cooler. A great player talking about things all us players love. Sure there was great playing. But this was so much different than what else is out there. You can tell this cat would be awesome to have a few beers with, talking guitars, gear and players. I subscribed immediately.
Hello Eddie, thanks so much... Going on a journey of what inspired so many of us and sharing it has been great fun... It's wonderful to hear you enjoyed this too. Oh and, if we're ever in the same town, I'm always up for grabbing a few beers... 🍻 🍺 Cheers for now mate. 👍
Passion and warfare is still a reference in the guitar business, the innovative playing and the high-level production of this masterpiece were unique in the 90's for instrumental guitar
Omg, I found someone who shares my love for Steve Vai's music and style. Yes, Passion and Warfare blew my mind when I first bought it. To this day, I consider him the greatest of all time.
Alex I really think that you should be included in this series of Guitar Gods! Anyone who can emulate all these Great Guitarists should be part of the list. You have impressed ALL of us 👉🏻World-Wide👈🏻 with your talent. I took both my Sons to see Steve Vai in concert years ago and he was the King of Electric guitar, as far as we were concerned. Shortly after you and Guthrie came on to the scene, at that instant, you were the King 👑! ! You possess one BIG thing that all the others want to have but can only dream about, . HEART! Greatness is earned, not freely given. As my Father told me as a concert pianist, 8 Days a week , 8 hours a day! You dedicate you whole life to your craft, and when you think you are good enough, you practice 8 more hours. My Father was like you Alex, if he would have decided to, could have toured (with the proper PR) but chose to raise our family! Thank -you Alex! You are King 👑 of Guitar! Cheers 🍻 my brother! Dana
Thank you mate... Well it's very hard to think of it that way really, I'm just a dude that loves music... But I sincerely appreciate your sentiment and the fact that you're enjoying the series... Cheers mate. 👍🎸🙏
I couldn’t choose between Passion&Warfare or Sex & Religion. Both are masterpieces. With S&R he really demonstrated how good he is just writing and playing such an in-your-face band record. Deep Down Into The Pain has probably the biggest bad-ass riff of all times, the intro is just enormous. Thanks a lot for the video. It really brings me a lot of good memories 🙏 And your playing is amazing btw!
Yeeessss i still have my Jem 20yrs plus! Flexible has the Attitude song! My fave album is def “passion & warfare”❤️🤘🏻Him with David Lee Roth outstanding
@@AlexHutchingsMusic only for a few guitar lessons from some guy called Alex, not sure if you heard of him, I believe they used to call him the "widdler" or something similar 😂
It's really interesting to see how Steve's playing has developed and changed over the years. While he still occasionally goes into beast mode and just shreds the fretboard to pieces, it seems to me he now tries to put more energy into the single notes he plays. I have always tried to copy his circular vibrato but somehow never managed to get the mechanics right, but he in the meantime has developed that concept much further and now stays quite long on single note and just tries to "shape" the sound of that one note with all kinds of vibrato wizardry ( and the help of a sustainer ). It's truly amazing how one can shape the sound of a single note just with different kinds of vibratos. I think he has come up with a new way of doing vibratos which he explained in one of his recent videos...that's definitely a field worth to explore. Great Video, Alex ! I love those guitars !
Hello mate, thanks for watching and your interesting comment... Yes I agree he's able to shred up the board and make notes sing too... What a fantastic inspiration.. All the best mate and I'm glad you're enjoying the videos 👍🎸
Such a wonderful episode with so much heart and soul. Besides your incredible playing, it's also quite inspiring and touching to hear you talking an describing everything. Makes my day everytime better!
Alex, thank you so very much for the time and effort you have invested into these videos, it is vey much appreciated. Despite 35 years of guitar playing I’ve never managed to reach the goal of doing justice to Mr Vai but he has never-the-less provided an infinite amount of inspiration. Looking forward to the next episode - could it be Hendrix???
My pleasure Sir, thank you for watching..... I never like to reveal the episode before it's released but once this series concludes, I may very well consider a 2nd series so I can cover many more guitarists. Thanks very much for watching 👍🙏🎸
Hi Alex. These videos are wonderful and it's nice to see your involvement when you tell your experiences. And you don't tell your emotions only with words but also when you play the guitar. This makes you the great musician you are. Thanks for the video and have a nice weekend
@@AlexHutchingsMusic Dude thank YOU! I studied your solo blue city city, that thing teached me so much! When I was like fifteen i watched your jam with Jack thammarat on little wing (for yamaha) so much that I know every single note by heart... You're an inspiration!
Really enjoyable video, loved the content, musicianship and the backstory! Great stuff. I have a very similar story as do most here I'm sure, however I went down the path of Tommy Emanuel 22yrs ago and have been in that realm ever since. I still enjoy listening to the old 'guitar gods' whenever I feel like reminiscing.

Thank you Alex. I felt you are answering my question that I wrote to your previous vid. If you do your last vid, please say something about your live gigs?Where can we see you play this year, or what are the plans. God bless you man!

I can play a little guitar....but I could never play like Steve Vai or Joe Satriani or.... But I can dance to their music which is quite unique and I guess I contribute to keeping their music alive. :)
There actually is no studio version of this song, the version on Real Illusions: Reflections was recorded live in Holland with the Metropole Orchestra (and I was fortunate to be there ❤️)
Another cracking video Alex, your Jem collection is very impressive particularly the floral, possible the most beautiful guitar ever made ? My Vai story started in '86 with the famous Crossroads guitar duel, Steve at his most ferocious. Keep up the great work :)
That's awesome mate. Yes of course I absolutely love crossroads to and forgot to mention it in this episode because there were so many things to say. I even have a version of me playing Eugenes Trick bag and teaching it on my channel if you haven't seen it already. Thanks for watching mate and all the best
I really loved the guitar tone Steve had on Sex & Religion , I felt it has been generally underrated somehow . Rescue Me Or Bury Me is a Vai highpoint .How great to have played one of his actual guitars too !
I think Steve and Mike Keneally are on record saying that their first albums were always going to be homages to being in Frank Zappa's band. There's a cool doco somewhere where Steve goes through his gear at the time and a lot of his gear at his Stucco Blue studio was either on loan or bought directly from Frank. Definitely check out Mike Keneally's Hat album.
Hi Alex, I love all your stuff on here, you're an incredible player and seem like such a knowledgeable, genuine and chilled guy. I share your love for Vai, ever since I saw the Seville Expo show in 91/92, the one with Satch and Brian May, where he played For The Love Of God live for the first time. He blew me away then, still does. Saw him live a few times, including Hammersmith on the Sex And Religion tour with Devin Townsend. Shame I don't share your, or his, talent for playing 😁. Just wondering ... one of my daughter moved down to Bristol about 3 years ago and I come down to visit sometimes. Would love to catch one of your gigs sometime, do you have any plans for local gigs in the Bristol area (or anywhere else really) in the near future, COVID-dependant obviously ? Cheers 🤟🤟 FWIW - impossible to pick an absolute favourite from his whole catalogue, but the live versions of Whispering A Prayer and Tender Surrender are right up there for me. And Bad Horsie, and Little Alligator, and Taurus Bulba ... you get the picture 😁
Hey Kevin I'm glad you're enjoying the series. Yes that expo concert was a favourite of so many of us I love it too. It's cool that your daughter lives in Bristol I do have a few gigs coming in but I'll have to let you know as and when they are actually happening or not. Some great song choice is there to mate. All the best 👍
@@AlexHutchingsMusic thnx Alex. I'll look forward to it. One in Reading would be ideal, but Bristol just as good 👍. All the best in the meantime and stay safe.
Nowadays there are faster / more technical players BUT, Steve Vai is the master of composition, period. You can love or hate his playing style but his music is unique to the bone.
I know the feelings Got my Floreal as a gift from my late grandad after I won a local guitarist competition when I was 18, 25 years ago It was second hand too but who cared And it's one of those guitars that I just take out of the case once in a blue moon because I'm scared to make even a scratch on it (but I have to replace the Lo-Pro Edge as it is a bit worn out, guitar is from 1991)
Nice one man, I'm glad you own one too, they are very special i think.... My Black Floral is an 1989 too, same age as my wife.. 😂🤣 Thanks for watching mate. 🙏
Yeah more Vai, this is awesome. You really have a nice JEM colletion, i only have two a Jem Jr and the classic white one that you also have :-) They really are great guitars even the cheap jr.
When you began talking about which JEMs you own I was getting anxious like "does he own the black and silver 7 string with the all seeing eye?!" because in high school that was my dream guitar but I never could afford one, and now they're probably holding high values. I'm jealous! Take good care of that one!
Funny you mentioned the Roland booth in 2015. I saw this video on TH-cam a year ago when I was looking for a Roland amp. I immediately was catched by your playing🤗
Hey mate, thanks for watching. This series is more about the guitar gods I listened to growing up and Guthrie wasn't 'out' then so I see him more as a contemporary.... Plus this series is finishing at ep. 10 but I may consider doing another series in the future of more modern players....So who knows I may do something with Guthrie again at some point I've known him now over 10 years... We should do something together maybe. Anyway I hope you're enjoying the players I've picked so far. All the best
Thanks very much mate, I'm glad you enjoyed it.... Yes that would be a cool lesson too surely... The trouble is there are tooo many cool licks to teach, I'll get around to them all in the end I'm sure... Lots more planned... All the very best mate and thanks for watching 🙏
Hey mate, I'm afraid after episode 10 I'll be taking a break from the series but I'd love to carry it on the in the future and those are definitely some cool guys to cover... I've got a cool story about MArty I could tell too... All the very best mate. 👍
Man, this guitar is a long time dream of mine ! At least I could find a Gambale model to compensate meanwhile.. I always find the handle so hip, let alone the crazy colours. these are made for unconventional playing Nice video ;)
Hahahah nah I didn't get that particular audition but then again I was young and didn't really know what I was doing.. But also I wasn't really wanting to go into Pop so it's probably a good thing.. Thanks for watching
Amazing! Unbelievable playing and fun stories. Just curious, when you played Steve's guitar, did you take the time to tune the Floyd Rose guitar to P4, or did you just play it in standard tuning?
Thanks Tom, I'm glad you enjoyed it.... That's a great question, I hadn't even though about that until your question, but I remember just playing it as it was... in standard.... All the best mate.
@@AlexHutchingsMusic Thanks Alex! That's pretty cool that you can switch between the tunings. I made the switch to P4 a couple of years ago, and by now I can can barely play anything in standard tuning.
Do you have some guitars you don't use too? Yeah it's terrible isn't, in one way I feel bad but in another I see them more like paintings, and a part of my childhood framed on the wall... They bring me much joy seeing them every day.... Thanks for watching mate.
Big Trouble would have to be one of the most overlooked and underrated solos of all Vai's work.

Cheers 🤟🤟
FWIW - impossible to pick an absolute favourite from his whole catalogue, but the live versions of Whispering A Prayer and Tender Surrender are right up there for me.
\m/ epic stuff man \m/ thanks for uploading \m/
My pleasure mate, thx for watching 👍
This has been a great series I've learned a lot & expanded my record collection too. Next week's gotta be Petrucci tho!!
Cheers Joe, I'm glad you're enjoying the series.... Tune in next time to find out... 😛 All the best mate. 👍
Nowadays there are faster / more technical players BUT, Steve Vai is the master of composition, period. You can love or hate his playing style but his music is unique to the bone.
Yes mate, I agree he's a very unique player and will always be a part of modern guitar history. Thanks for watching 👍
i never could get into steve vai. his tone and licks never impressed me but Alex Hutchings is a monster guitarist.
Thanks alex !!
My pleasure Thanks for watching 👍
I know the feelings
Got my Floreal as a gift from my late grandad after I won a local guitarist competition when I was 18, 25 years ago
It was second hand too but who cared
And it's one of those guitars that I just take out of the case once in a blue moon because I'm scared to make even a scratch on it (but I have to replace the Lo-Pro Edge as it is a bit worn out, guitar is from 1991)
Nice one man, I'm glad you own one too, they are very special i think.... My Black Floral is an 1989 too, same age as my wife.. 😂🤣 Thanks for watching mate. 🙏
Yeah more Vai, this is awesome.
You really have a nice JEM colletion, i only have two a Jem Jr and the classic white one that you also have :-)
They really are great guitars even the cheap jr.
Glad you enjoyed it mate. Yes all the Jems are fabulous. All the best and thanks for watching 👍
When you began talking about which JEMs you own I was getting anxious like "does he own the black and silver 7 string with the all seeing eye?!" because in high school that was my dream guitar but I never could afford one, and now they're probably holding high values. I'm jealous! Take good care of that one!
Ibanez UV777 is what it was, the universe 7 string! I had to look it up!
Hey Tiny Star, yes mate I must get it back I lent it out 5 years ago now.. I hope I can get it from the studio... Thanks for watching 👍
WOW!!👏💯🔥🔥🔥
Cheers mate. Thanks for watching 👍
Great story Alex, love it🤗
Thanks so much Ton. All the best to you 👍🙏
Funny you mentioned the Roland booth in 2015. I saw this video on TH-cam a year ago when I was looking for a Roland amp. I immediately was catched by your playing🤗
i thought you will play tender surrender in the end of video, but i guess i was wrong 😂
I would have loved too but I'm not allowed with Copyright rules.... Best to leave that for Steve Vai himself... 😂 Such a great track though...
i hope we'll have an episode on guthrie govan
Hey mate, thanks for watching. This series is more about the guitar gods I listened to growing up and Guthrie wasn't 'out' then so I see him more as a contemporary.... Plus this series is finishing at ep. 10 but I may consider doing another series in the future of more modern players....So who knows I may do something with Guthrie again at some point I've known him now over 10 years... We should do something together maybe. Anyway I hope you're enjoying the players I've picked so far. All the best
I guess Vai being a part of this series is quite obvious, just because of the number of JEMs you own :-)
Love the weekly videos!
Hahah, Thanks mate, Glad you like them! Thanks for watching and all the best 👍
Would love to see the clip!
Me tooo.. 🤣😂 Thanks for watching 👍
Thanks for this. It was fun
Glad you enjoyed it mate. 👍
just noticed the pink fgm on the end
Cool I have serval videos of me playing that guitar... It's one of my favourites. All the best 👍🙏🎸
Congratulations on your work. Great content. This phrase from For The Love of God at 10:42 would make a great lesson too, don't you think? :)
Thanks very much mate, I'm glad you enjoyed it.... Yes that would be a cool lesson too surely... The trouble is there are tooo many cool licks to teach, I'll get around to them all in the end I'm sure... Lots more planned... All the very best mate and thanks for watching 🙏
Will there be a Paul Gilbert, Zakk Wylde, Jason Becker, Marty Friedman episode?
Hey mate, I'm afraid after episode 10 I'll be taking a break from the series but I'd love to carry it on the in the future and those are definitely some cool guys to cover... I've got a cool story about MArty I could tell too... All the very best mate. 👍
Hello, Alex! Thanks for sharing it with us! May I ask you what wah did you use on this video? Be good!
Hey Daniel. Yeah no worries my pleasure. It was a cry baby mate.... The classic...👍🙏🎸 Thanks for watching
Ótimo vídeo! Alex, será que você poderia interpretar Windows To The Soul do Steve? Parabéns pela coleção...Top!
Man, this guitar is a long time dream of mine ! At least I could find a Gambale model to compensate meanwhile..
I always find the handle so hip, let alone the crazy colours. these are made for unconventional playing
Nice video ;)
Stuff Alex you don't need money, it's all in your hands you can't put a price on cheers
10:00 haha to be fair I probably would HAVE also played vai songs for a reggae audition 😅😅😅 Needless to say, did you win the part ?
Hahahah nah I didn't get that particular audition but then again I was young and didn't really know what I was doing.. But also I wasn't really wanting to go into Pop so it's probably a good thing.. Thanks for watching
Cool video!!! Do you still have some RG guitars???
Thank you mate, yes I do, a 550 and 470 I believe.. Cool guitars.. Thanks for watching 👍🙏
@@AlexHutchingsMusic Maybe, you could do a video explaining the diferences between the RG and the Jem.
Sou fã 👍
👍🎸🙏
10:41 relatable
Do you have some guitars you don't use too?
Yeah it's terrible isn't, in one way I feel bad but in another I see them more like paintings, and a part of my childhood framed on the wall... They bring me much joy seeing them every day.... Thanks for watching mate.
