I love this scene... it's HILARIOUS! The pie thrower must've been a real pro because he nailed her face on point! Even the 'splat' effect of the whip cream is perfect. What I think gets me the most is the sudden sharp contrast from Anne's stunning beauty queen with tiara look - TO - pie face, frizzed hair and NO tiara! I don't know how many takes this took, but she was so good at taking it. I love the show and it's stuff like this and the humor that has me LOLing.
In 1962 I spent the weekend walking a couple neighborhoods collecting for St. Jude Children's Hospital. I enjoyed "That Girl" so much I named my first daughter Marlo. Keep up the good work for St. Jude Children's Hospital, I'm sure your dad is proud. I urge people who have been blessed with healthy children to become a Partner in Hope!
I was 13 when this episode came on TV. That was it, I was hooked on beautiful women taking pies in the face. She created that scene years later on the Mike Douglas Show but got hit with 4-5 pies as did Rachel Welch. awesome!
I was watching this from the Samsung channels with NO DVR and THOUGHT that the pie came a few minutes later....... SO here I am now watching the pie fly! I have this on the DVD collection.... no matter. I was 12ish and wanted to live in NYC in her apartment with the brick wall view and phone extensions that made it across the hall and into her friend's kitchen. If I get dementia, I hope it takes me there so I can seemingly have a safe walk to Central Park wear the mini dress/skirt with color coordinated stockings and maybe some GoGo boots. lol
@TheStanbabe Presumably because Ann Marie wasn't sure what this would do for her career.. this was expected to become a running blackout gag for the LAUGH-IN style show-within-a-show on which she was appearing. It might have affected her chances for other opportunities to become known as "That Pie Girl".
The way I see it, especially considering that 'I Love Lucy', 'The Danny Thomas Show' and 'That Girl' had some of the same writers, the scripts in this one had roots in the other 2 shows; in fact, this one had a cousin in the Slowly I Turn one and the bowling ball episode had one in the Loving Cup and gluing a beard ones, as well as the one with William Holden. All were I Love Lucy.
As far as TDTS, the episode of comparison is the one where Kathy is stuck with soap on her after the water stops working in their building (typical of NYC at that time).
tomservo got it right: the show Ann Marie was in was based on "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In" and in a bizarre twist ABC tried to do it with "Turn On" and it flopped!
According to Desmond Athole, Thomas' former majordomo who wrote a tell-all, Thomas's behind-her-back nickname on the "That Girl" set was piranha. One read of the book, "That Girl and Phil," and you never forget again Marlo Thomas is NOT Ann Marie.
gerry wilson a blessed esster to you and yours liked the pie scene reminds me of your dad's fazmous spit takes want to send snail mail greetings is st jude's address a good one
My least favorite "That Girl" episode. I hate "pie in the face"-type humor, especially when it's a woman on the receiving end. Except for the critic in the one episode of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" -- That's hilarious because he's such a snooty jerk. But Ann's too sweet that I don't find it funny -- I just feel for her humiliation.

She is Danny's daughter!!

Marlo is so beautiful!
Super hilarious That Girl season 3 classic!
That was a beautiful pie in the face, and kudos for knocking that tiara clean off! 👍
I have only recently discovered this sit com on You Tube. It looks like a good show, and she appears to be a likeable character.😊
That Girl she had class and style...You dont see much of that nowadays.....
no you don't, that's why I Love the opening of the second season of That Girl when Marlo is in Lincoln Center wearing that beautiful Purple dress 😊👍👍

Anne Marie. Wowza.
At 0:22, notice the 2 ABC Cameras in the shot as the camera that's filming pulls away from ann marie (marlo thomas).
It was. It was used in B&W in the Freddie Fillmore eps of 'I Love Lucy'.
This looks like the type of T.V show I would have loved when I was younger, but I have only discovered it recently on You Tube.

GOOD SHOT!!!
That stock audience footage looks like it's from the 1950's, or maybe earlier.
Early 60s was just an extension of the 50s. The 60s didn't become "the 60's" until around 1965 or 66
Who was the "pie taker teacher"?

This may have been part of Turn On. Btw, ABC also tried this again with Romp in 1968. Another bomb.

I think he was just being an Ath-ole:.)

@TheStanbabe It's the Maytag guy!
He was Jesse White.

it's tough being empathetic .... I know first hand
Marlo may have had a good laugh, but not so much Ann!
Aw, nuts!!!
Ted Bessel is such a wimpy guy,she could have done much better
Ted despised his character role. Sad, he convinced me playing Donald.
