Death Valley - Hanaupah Canyon Oasis Trail - Expedition Truck Camper Off Road Overland Adventure!

- On this adventure we drive deep into Death Valley on the “less traveled” roads to explore the Hanaupah Canyon Oasis Trail. This is an off road type trail the gradually degrades until the path is lost completely from erosion.
We started the trail late in the day and didn’t arrive at our camp until after dark. The next day we proceeded to the end of the “road” and hiked the a couple miles up the canyon to find the oasis spring. The trail into the canyon became overgrown with large loose rocks. It was a grand adventure! We heard the spring water and kept going until we found the green oasis.
The best part was relaxing on a tall boulder and enjoying the amazing landscape. I’m always surprised how many people don’t enjoy the destination.
We had fun on the road back out and tested the suspension on the truck. This was an incredible destination for off grid, remote beauty.

HAHA - Funny story... Our first trip out with the camper earlier this year resulted in 12 broken eggs filling the fridge. Always lots to learn! But this trip everything stayed where it was supposed to be!

Need a camp-x pop up. I’d never take that road with a truck camper too high center of gravity. That looks like it wants to roll over.
It is tall... but the COG isn't bad. Around 32". Most of the weight is low... we carry the jacks in the basement which also helps. We owned a Four Wheel Camper; it was fine. Realistically we've gone to the same places with the hardwall with more comfort. Actually we've traveled further and longer duration off road with this camper...
Do you have the off-road gauges on your F250? Would love to know what your max off-camber degrees was on this trip. I once got to 30 degrees off camber on a Raptor but wondering what’s the threshold for the Super Duty.
That's a good question. I don't have those style gauges. Camber is a tough thing... It can escalate quickly. Thankfully, I've never rolled a rig but it does take some getting adjusted to every vehicle.
I've been researching truck campers for off-grid, how stable do you feel in the Northstar compared to 4 Wheel given their weight and size differentials?
Not sure there is much difference. But we have a light-ish camper and keep weight down low. Think we've already been through some rougher terrain than the FWC. This truck is much more capable than the Tundra that hauled the FWC. That being said the suspension makes a massive difference on both trucks. Tundra was a better "go fast" rig on rough roads. Super Duty can conquer more technical terrain...

How have you connected the camper in the bed to keep from side to side movement? Great work!

@@stout_tossme7541 agreed. That’s the one big issue with mine off-road, it moves around. I’m going to work up some rails and pad them.
I’m not sure if you started off at the Scotty’s Well turnoff. At about one mile up the trail is the sea level contour. Depending on height of vegetation you should be able to look to south and see lights at sea level at the junction of Highway 190 and Badwater Road with camera 6 feet above sea level. This would be impossible at sea level at the beach because of Earth’s curvature.

Do you get any rocking of the camper from side to side due to flex of the tie downs?
Yes, the tie downs will allow some camper movement. Not a huge amount. They are spring loaded so the idea is to allow moderate movement but retaining tension...
@@TruckCamper do you regret going with the hard side vs a pop up for off-roading?
@@retiredbiker Not yet!! Comfort and enjoyment is so much greater. And haven't been stopped yet. Realistically, a popup camper is 8-9ft tall... we are 10.5ft (not counting vents). So you'll likely need to clear similar trees and obstacles either way. For shorter weekend or summer type travel... popup is great. But adverse weather and longer term 1 month plus... hardwall.
Why does your Northstar Liberty not have the little rear skirt portion that normally has the tail lights? Is that custom from Northstar?

Do you have a locker on the front? do you know much about them if there is any out there that are good?
Yes. We installed an OX locker that is actuated with the air compressor. Check out our earlier truck build video. I've run lots of styles of differential lockers. Popular ones are ARB (air), Eaton (electric), Truetrac (mechanical gear limited slip) and others. I really like the OX locker for the simplicity and ability to manually lock/unlock it. It also allow for it to be controlled by cable, air or electric and manual. Really cool design.

I know why you remove your jack stands. I was wondering if you store them at home or do you bring them with you, so you have them to remove the camper if needed for some reason? If you bring the jack stands with you, where to store them?

How heavy is your camper?
Dry weight is about 1,800. We are closer to 3,000 loaded. Weight adds up quickly!
My 86fb about 3160 before my stuff. Its amazing how much food weights. 7cu ft fridge

@@allenjohnson6605 Not yet! It has surprisingly good stability. Obviously need to drive for the size and weight... but we've run it hard. Even caught air with the truck and camper. Good suspension makes it enjoyable. :)

We built it to go to remote places. That's the point of it... Otherwise would drive an RV.
