He was the man in the 80s till the early 90s. Power and pitch control just unbelievable.. try to cover this art. Guess what it wont be even a bit similar to this. Perform vocaly live better than studio is so hard you cant imagine
Yes. He sounds like he's going to blow a gasket! Great stuff that I didn't appreciate when it came out back in the day when I was maybe 14 or so. Didn't have the experience of adult stress and drives just yet at that time, but I can appreciate the passion of the song these days.
One of the best singers ever. He's so consistent, so fluid it almost sounds as if it's actually the studio version. There's no additions to his voice. There's no special effects or any kind of filters or anything. It's just pure Collins smashing it out.
Yes! 4:41 He shakes his fist and screams "MY EYYYYYYES, they're burning, mama". Great stuff! I agree with a lot of people that his later soft and corny stuff is not good, but anyone that could perform like this is something special and is never to be forgotten!
Can someone tell me how Phil blows the roof off this song with his screaming and still has a voice left? I’ve heard him say numerous times that he never practices singing- that Genesis rehearsals were his practice. How did he do that? When they opened their Invisible Touch tour with Mama, I couldn’t believe it. That’s a hard song to sing when the voice is cold. People do not appreciate Phil’s talent. The man is super human.
well, people don't recognise the power of his voice and people like to believe he's just some useless pop artist who couldn't write, sing, or play any instrument.
bananeskit He's very underrated actually. Most people find his music too safe and boring compared to other artists, even though he is just as good, if not better than them. That's what makes him underrated.
4:41 "MY EYYYYYYES!" It's gotta be really hard to summon high energy and sincere emotion after playing and singing the same songs night after night, but here Phil looks like he's gonna blow a gasket. Reminds one of Beavis. Well done!
How can someone sing like this??? Ooh what vocals AND intelligence and genius.... Not to mention that English dialect. To come from the drums to lead singer in Genesis was totally phenomenal With Phil Collins.. I love him so much definitely Expressed emotions and vocals in EVERY SONG!!! BRAVO TO PHIL COLLINS ALWAYS.... AND YOU TOO FOR APPRECIATION OF SUCH GOOD MUSIC. 💖🌷
Let’s not knock Queen. Let’s say this is on Bohemian Rhapsody level!! I say that with respect. I’ve seen Genesis and Phil since 1976. My favorite band by far Genesis!! The old stuff, new stuff, I like it all.
Music at its peak. Real instruments being played live and the focus on the music and not choreography. Phil is truly an amazing singer - one of the best
I was there 13 years old with my late Dad bless him, totally blown away and they were filming at the good old NEC Birmingham, superb concert unbelievable experience and in the cage was jaw dropping making the hairs on my back stand up even no jue4 thinking about it, they were at the top of their game in the 80s, Phil's voice just got better and better
I.Love.This.Song. He's a rare vocalist that sounds the same all the time no matter what or where in the studio and or on stage. Consistency like his rare.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard You mean live or on record? His voice has always been great, but on some of the early Floyd tours he could be a bit hit-or-miss.
It is amazing how the band manages to bring to the stage the song so perfectly. All tones and chords present in the recorded music in the studio are present. There are few bands that manage such prowess. Even the voice of Phil Collins is compatible with the disc.
just got a txt from a friend's husband, he must be perty drunk. ......again! !!!sooo glad she don't get mad at me for that!!! Don't know why he does that shit! !! I never, ever respond to him!!!! only my girl!!!!
In 1984 still remains that dark prog sound from the beeginings. Phill's voice is spectacural. For charisma, song writing, power and stage management, one of the best of decade. Very drammatical like Freddy Mercury. Powerful performance.
I know 80's Genesis gets a lot of stick from people but this is gold. Even as late as the album this track came from they were releasing great material. Mama is one of my favourite songs of theirs. It's really dark and sinister in parts, especially the Synclavier melody at the beginning and the section from 3:22 where the keys and bass pedals join up. Spectacular. Phil's vocal performance is up there with the best I've ever heard too. What a great version this is (I remember seeing it on telly right around the time it came out).

Thanks
When is it NOT dark and sinister? Banks' work on this one reminds me of some of the ambient music in an immersive and scary computer game. Couldn't really appreciate this song back when I was 15 and it came out, but now I surely can!
well they might come to the US for there reunion tour if they come to south Carolina it would be worth seeing and it would be a good experience seeing them live
@@brianadams5088 Mike and Tony may own Genesis but without a great singer like Phil, a good song may do nothing. It’s also about performance, charisma and stage presence, etc and Phil has them all. It’s a win-win combo with these three.
Funny you should say that I saw genesis at their last tour in 07 and I felt not having been a fan of Genesis but More P.C. due to my age ... but Phil was the entertainment and the performer and he kept the concert Amazing because TB and MR are both great but they are not entertainers they literally just add the amazing backing sound ... but I was disappointed that they didn’t get more Involved in terms of speaking to the crowd... but I can’t fault their Musical ability they are true artist! I saw Phil at Hyde park and he was just as amazing at 60 odd and sat down! Love you Phil you truly are amazing x
Phil said years ago that his inspiration for this song was the book, "The Moon's A Balloon"....about a young man's obsession with an older prostitute.....though Phil put a more sinister twist to it. He's wants to kill this woman if she doesn't comply. Anyone remember the Magnum PI episode where there was a weirdo killing hookers? They played this song.
Maybe not the best song, but arguably the most moody and sinister and atmospheric tune ever to receive any decent airplay. Def stands out in a BIG way from the usual stuff you hear on the radio or in public.
The drums go hard as hell. Love phil. All of his ballads build like this. At the beginning you feel calm by the end of song you wanna break your wife's favorite toy. Lol.
