Cendol in America | Malaysian Street Food

  • Cendol is a Malaysian street food and popular dessert. The basic ingredients are coconut milk, jelly noodles made from mung bean flour with green food coloring (usually derived from the pandan leaf), shaved ice and palm sugar. Other ingredients such as red beans, glutinous rice, grass jelly, creamed corn, might also be included.
During this past Fourth of July weekend, the in laws came over to grill burgers and put us in charge of dessert. Being pregnant, Rachel was craving for some cendol. The only problem is we're so far away from Malaysia and I've never made cendol before. So I spent the day figuring out how to make Malaysian Cendol. The video shows the story of all the challenges I faced in making this dessert.

This video reminds me of the days when I was studying in Jordan a Middle Eastern country. There’s no Asian market in our place so everything including mungbin flour to pandan extract we brought from Malaysia. One day my housemate and I were craving cendol and we also made cendol from scratch. Definitely once in a lifetime experience! I really took Malaysian food for granted and just realised it when Im abroad.

Kumaar , if you dont have ice shaver . Blender also work 👍🏼 more smooth result . You just blend the ice with coconut milk ! The best cendol is you must include a generous among of coconut milk 🤤 more creamy , and also use "Gula Melaka" for sweetness . Melt your gula melaka using sauce pan and add some pandan leave to give some aroma too 😁

I just realized that American are really patriotic. I mean we do have a holiday for our independence and there is a parade to celebrate it, but Malaysians, or at least Malays don't specifically make plans to cook or even have family tradition on that day. We would for every other celebration but not Merdeka.

as Indonesian I'm okay with that title..
yes cendol is originally from Indo, Jawa
but since cendol can be found everywhere on the street in both malay and indo... so it's oke to say "cendol malaysian street food / indonesia street food".. it's different, it's not a claiming..
      Love peace
